What's Your Go To Hat?

GolfSpy_APH

any type of bucket hat that covers the ears. Having Basel cell removed from one ear and pre Basel on the other, I made a HUGE mistake wearing ball caps my entire life. I've worn hats since childhood out here in the country, when I should have worn the farmers hat that covers the ears. My bestie has 1/5 of his left ear missing due to same. It's no joke, and the sun is MORE damaging today than 50 years ago. I also basically lived outdoors, so time exposure does figure into it, but take a word of caution.

Tips of my ears will burn in an instant so if UV Index is going to hit 5 during a round, then I wear a hat with a brim.  Usually a Field & Stream or Columbia from the fishing section at Dick's Sporting Goods.  Otherwise, depengin on the temperature, whatever baseball cap or knit beanie I have at hand.  My wife will attest that utility beats fashion in everything I wear on or off the course.

You may be the king of hot takes. Not in a bad way either! You've come out with some that are certain to bring on the conversation.

I'm genuinely trying to decide if this is satire or not lol. I am also not knocking your view as everyone has their own. But I have to ask that if a baseball cap lacks sophistication, how does a bucket hat not?

Me, having an issue with getting the right size, I have to stick with the tried and true and depends on the season.  My go to in the spring and fall in the Titleist Sport Mesh because I can get the XL/XXL in the standard colors I like.  I can pick most colors I need to go with my FJ apparel, but usually stick with the basic black/white, white/navy, white/grey, white/black.  White with black lettering is my go to.  I can order the Tour Preferred or Tour Elite which comes in a size 8 but prefer the Mesh.  Only two that really fit my head properly  In the summer when it is hot/humid and the sun is beating down on us along the coast line, I wear the Titleist Charleston and Tour Aussies.  Have been wearing the Aussie hats for years, have kept my skin cancer free and when I go to see my dermatologist in November she is always happy.  White is a good reflector of the sunlight and yes it gets dirty.  A little Shout and a toothbrush, put it in the top of the dishwasher and it comes out nice and clean.  Must have at least four dozen Titleist caps/hats/visors in my rotation including their StaDry rain cap with Pinehurst Logo.  Will pick up one at a course every now and then, if it is cool and fits in my need for a color.  Plaid visor from Hilton Head Heritage, i.e.

So, as people on the Queenstown trip last year know, I love my Aussie Chiller hat. This year though I've sprung for a GPS device that you can clip onto the brim of a hat, so I'm back looking at caps again... unless I can get it on the belt loop or back pocket. I always feel weird about branded caps though, so it's proving to be a bit tricky. My guess is that we'll find something eventually.

Arc'teryx makes things light, packable waterproof and well. I use Arc'teryx for cold weather beanie, rain jacket, and golf hat. I'm 62 and carry my own clubs and have little patience with extraneous, inefficient and poorly made items.

The hat in question weighs 1.7 ounces, is gortex, breathable, offers great uv protection and packs down to the size of my thumb. It also looks decent and doesn't crumple badly. Arc'teryx is an amazing company. https://arcteryx.com/us/en/shop/bucket-hat

Agreed.. know your audience friend 😜 isn't a baseball cap more/less considered a general part of a golfer's attire?

I mean, a bucket hat doesn't necessarily scream high class to me either.. but they're definitely cool.

Whatever works best for everyone, no doubt!

I only buy hats that are performance material and lightweight, and have not run into poorly made or inefficient products from TM, Titliest, etc. Also most of those hats are 30+ UPF or better anymore, the Tour Rope hat I just picked up yesterday is 50+ UPF. I can also pick up 4 of the Tour Rope hats for the price of one of the Arc'teryx hats you linked. Your standard cotton ball cap that doesn't wick sweat and doesn't breathe well doesn't work the best IMO, so not all ball caps can be classified into one category. The same can be said for bucket hats.

I'm not worried about needing to pack my hat down on the course, so that is a mute point in my book. For other applications, though, I definitely know how packable gear comes in handy as I pack in layers when bowhunting in the fall and winter.

Going to go stick my head in a bucket and pretend I did not hear that comment about the baseball style caps.  Granddaddy use to tell me that a lot when I was growing up on the farm when I said something off the wall.  But not repeat what else he said to me.  He was my mentor and a very smart man.  Anyhow to each his own.  Guess the guys on tour can't be wrong.  I have a FJ bucket rain hat that I keep in my bag in case of inclement weather.  Folds up nicely out of my way and every hat has it's place.  They make good hunting hats, I have one camo and one orange, but do not think they would look very sophisticated on the golf course, maybe at a $10 a round muni that is not very well maintained.  Just sayin'.  Hakuna matata.

I think that bucket style caps are 100% applicable in certain instances, and if that is someone's preferred style of that who am I to tell them that it's wrong? I'm more a fan of ball caps and grew up wearing one almost daily, still do to this day.

Titleist makes a wide brimmed hat that I think looks really sharp, the Charleston Aussie, I've just never felt the need to own one. To me, the floppy brimmed style bucket hats would become a distraction in my peripheral vision, but I could be completely wrong as I never have actually owned one.

I'm of Swiss ancestry. Play tournament golf at a 4 handicap and most often carry.  Plenty of mountain climbers in the family. I treat my golf accouterments like a serious mountain climber. Everything packs down or it doesn't go. Use 11 clubs, with the gap wedge doing double service as a cane. The bag is sun mountain 2.5 though I'm aware Honma has released a lighter one. 6 golf balls max. I often play in inclement weather, so gortex is a must.

They scream "I'm a loud ignorant American" or a conformist. Why wear a hat at all if itta baseball cap. I confess I have a Loro Piana cashmere made in Italy baseball cap, but it's for out on the town.

Settled clubs: Epon 50/8, 45/6, 40/5, 35/4, 30/4, 26/3 all with Zelos 8 stiff, 1/2 degree flat. Mizuno CLK Hybrid 20 degrees. Putter: 37" rife.h Hbore xl 2wood (the unicorn)--16 degrees, 420 cc?

Not settled: 54/10 Vokey

Not settle: 12 degree Mizuno stx 12* set to 11.

This is where I have a problem with the broad category of "bucket hat" because (until now) I never thought I had seen a hat that looked like a bucket to earn the moniker.  Now I have seen a real bucket hat.

People call my broad brim hat a bucket hat and that grinds my gears.  It is like calling a T-Top Trans Am a convertible.  Two completely different genre thrown into one category, might as well call all golfers who have money in the game Pros.

... I know they get lumped together but I think a small brimmed "bucket" hat is different than a larger brimmed "boonie" hat. I bought quite a few softer brimmed boonies and in wind they are a problem. But the harder brimmed boonies with a draw string (like in my avatar) do not change shape in the wind. They can work like a sail in high winds but tightening the chin strap keeps it on your head. They are no different than baseball caps for peripheral vision and I never notice my brim when playing, something I also thought might be a problem.
