SPY VIP GolfSpy Dave Posted March 15, 2010 SPY VIP Share Posted March 15, 2010 I was reading the GD list of the great spectator holes and they showed a photo of the 16th at Augusta, listing it as great hole #3. It looked to me like many of the people were having to watch from well across the lake. How much can you actually see from a vantage like that? Is everyone in the gallery using binoculars? Back in 96 at the Phoenix Open, the crowds were much smaller and I felt like I could see fine. As I head to the US Open this year, I am already thinking about gear. MmmmmmBuddy
Get a v-swing!!!! I think that the lake on 16 is not that big, so the "patrons" are quite close to the action. It looked larger than I expected in GD. This v-swing you mention, does it perhaps attach to a cart? It could..... or even a golf bag.... or a range stall. Dave
According to google earth it about 32 yards at it's widest, and just over 132 at it's longest. I have a revolving WITB policy.

So with that, you could get swing, but not ball visuals potentially. Unless they use the Srixon Yellows. Dave
I have no idea what so ever, where they have the ropes. I'd say you might pick up ball, but you ain't see squat on the green. Unless they let you around the back of the green. I'm pretty sure apart from the last 2 holes last year and the playoff I have never watched the masters. I have a revolving WITB policy. MmmmmmBuddy
I could be wrong, having never been to Augusta National, but I think the Patron viewing area is above the green slightly, so you would be able to see the putting surface. Addicted2Golf
I think they list it as a great spectator hole because of the drama that occurs there. Think about Tiger's shot that trickled to the hole, paused at the lip, and just dropped in. I was holding my breath on that hole during Phil's first run. It just seems the run of holes before the 17th and 18th are great finishing holes with the last two being somewhat anti-climatic. but maybe that is just me. Jballmn
Pretty sure you can see a good amount from being that 'far' away.

You can see everything from the left side of the pond or from around the green. On practice round days it can be very crowded, but until the leaders come through on Sunday it's not bad at all during the actual tournament.
