Favorite golf app?

I use 3bays putting stroke analyzer for practice. It offers phenomenal technical data on head shaft orientations angles paths.

On course, Golf Buddy GPS has been solid and offers distances at a glance without all the scoping lasering.

I really love Beezer golf. It gives distances on your Apple Watch but the real value is the bet tracking. It does literally all of the math on any game you can imagine. No clubhouse arguments about who owes what. Tons of games that are good for ideas and it includes handicaps, presses, etc. really good

WOW!  So many golf apps...and different ideas on how best to use them.  For a while I was using Golf Pad, which I really liked, but didn't have anything to measure it against.  When I purchased my Shotscope Pro LX1 I used the Shotscope app, but then lost my H4 (most of the time I found the H4 when it came off the belt clip...then lost for good).  I had a difficult time remembering to touch the end of my club to the H4 to record the shot.  After losing the H4 I purchased a Garmin Approach S62 golf watch and have been using the Garmin Connect app, which I also like. Hoping to pick up a full set of the Garmin Approach CT10 sensors to expand on the Connect app.  I have recorded what others are using and will check some of them out. Thanks to all for the feedback and suggestions!

Finally got fitted and ended up with Callaway Big Bertha irons, drivers and hybrids.  Now...let's get out and learn how to use them better and better.  Hit em straight!

I use 18 Birdies Premium as my primary golf app. I like the many tools that are embedded into the package. I also use the Rapsodo “Combines”, the PRGR launch monitor, and TheStack speed system trainer. I find the Rapsodo inconsistent but really like doing speed training. I believe my handicap improve from 15 to a 12 as a result of my efforts.

GolfLogix has been my “go to” app for distance estimates via GPS, keeping score, tracking club distances, accuracy off the tee, and looking at my overall progress.

This year I plan to try out the putting feature when I’m not playing in league to see if it has any value.

I’ve used it for the last 5 years or so with no issues.

Yep, I like 18 Birdies also. I normally use a rangefinder for distances and only get the phone out between holes to track score and stats. I use golf to get away from “phone things” so I like to use it as little as possible. When I forget the rangefinder the distances seem to be pretty good unless a hole has been renovated recently.
I don’t use an app for practice, but I’ll have to give some of these a try! Great thread!

I use to use GolfLogix but started to find it too tedious, especially the premium version so I tried 18Birdies. I liked that better so I tried the premium version. I like their premium version better. I never really liked the green reading in GolfLogix as it slowed down play.

I’m a long time Grint user but my iPing putting app has been awesome for seeing what my putter face and path are doing. I’ve gone from a strong arc to a slight arc stroke. The ability to track all aspect of my putting has really boosted my putting confidence. Can’t say enough about iPing.

I've been using Swing U for quite a few years.  It used to be called "SwingXSwing".  I will say the last 6 months or so, I just stopped using it.  Before I bought a range finder I used the App for distances a lot and to keep my score (and handicap).  I just got tired of entering data in the app on the course I think.  Sometimes it's nice to just simplify and play.  Also they changed the interface for entering scores (and other data) and I don't like the new interface as much.

I use the Garmin app as it is connected to my S62, it gives me enough data to understand where the weak spots are.  Before Garmin I used 18 Birdies which I thought was the best one I tried to use, I liked that one a lot, as it was a pretty decent data set with the free version. The other app of course is the Trackman, when you go to the virtual range (in the winter we do that here) and play, either practice or a round, it keeps track of so many data points that you can spend a lot of time analyzing it (just to find out that you suck and you need more practice!!).

I've been using Golf Logix for several years and feel a little uncomfortable on the course without it.  My course map, yardage book, electronic scorecard, and club selector tool are all rolled into one.  Like many functional apps, the cost is steadily increasing, but I'm willing to pay for a solid product.

If I had one complaint about Golf Logix its that the handicap calculator is useless.  I have no idea how it is arriving at the number posted but it is a full three strokes higher than my GHIN handicap.

I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but I have seen so many players spend more time on the course trying to enter every shot, tracking stats, looking at hole overviews, then seeing a text or email or a social media thing or whatever. Poof their gone off into data world. Penalty, delay of game! I don't want any distractions. All electronics are on silent mode and in the bag. Except for my rangefinder! Heck, I don't even want to know what time it is. This is coming from a data driven former Engineer. So many times, I have seen someone take several minutes to even get out of the cart because they are looking up the hole on an app. For goodness sakes it's a 368 yard par four and the green is straight out in front of you with one trap on the left.

I sit in disbelief when I watch my wife or kids text each other when they are either in the same room or a room apart. Use your words or get up off your butt and go talk to them in person! But I digress.

I'm sure part of it is me. Between my age and where my game is I know what needs to be worked on. I don't need data to tell me what I already know.

If I want to mark up the score card and enter stuff later at home that's fine and I rarely even do that. I did this a few times in the last year or two only so I could state some stats in one of the threads, and I found that distracting on the course. I was jotting down GIR, FIR and putts.  Enjoy the course, the scenery, and the people you are playing with.

I have Golfshot Plus v 5.78 since 2014 and have thoroughly enjoyed it, especially when playing a course for the first time.  It shows you your location on the hole along with distance from the center of the green.  It provides you with distance to bunkers and hazards and distance to carry the bunker and hazards. You can also move the cursor to other targets to get distance to trees or layup area, for example.  You can keep track of you statistics as well, greens-in-regulation, fairways-hit, sand shots, saves, etc.  In 2014 when I first purchased it, the onetime price was $10.99.  The map overview is from Google.  I have yet to find a course that is not provided by the app. And there is no price for adding courses.  My understanding that my price is a grandfathered price.  There is now an annual price for using the app.  For my game, it is well worth it.

I use GHIN for tracking handicaps, V1 for the occasional recording and reviewing my swing, and GolfShot Plus for on course score keeping.  GolfShot has an excellent user interface and connects nicely to the AppleWatch.  It’s very easy and quick to update your score.  Using the watch interface it is faster to update the score than using a scorecard.

I’d be interested in hearing more about different golf specific training apps.  I’ve heard a few mention “fit for golf” and “18Strong”.  I’d really like to hear more about these and others.

I use Golf Pad with the premium license. My favorite features are listed below.

  • GPS distances are very accurate.
  • Shot distance tracking.Screenshot_20230227_122903_GolfPad.jpg.a19dc029ebb2b32a080ef961b5da417f.jpg
  • Elevation change from tee to green.
  • Satellite map with shot overlays.
  • Screenshot_20230227_123225_GolfPad.jpg.3a17396f868e002bf14a66bc56fcad1e.jpg
  • Stokes gained.Screenshot_20230227_123029_GolfPad.jpg.7a9c78ff5720dd572c97d54115121e2a.jpg

The only thing that I think could be improved is the "recommend club" and "plays like x number yards" features. But since I don't use those features I still like the app.

I have been very interested in the Decades golf system.  I play most of my golf on about 5 courses.  Is Decades a system that you can just buy just one course at  a time or is it an annual thing?

The Grint is a great app for golf. Applies a social aspect to the game, along with the ability to track shots, track analysis, provide yardage in play, and even grants the ability to get a handicap.

Me and my buddies use it for multiple reasons… to see live scoring updates from group to group, track multi round tournaments. We recently used it to track a Ryder style tournament we played on our last golf trip.

I tried it.  I think it's UX is over-complicated.  There's simply too much crap in there.  Maybe I'll give it another shot someday.

I agree with the others that mentioned Hole19.  It is the ONLY Apple Watch compatible GPS app that really meets my criteria of -

1.  Works on Apple Watch's built in GPS capabilities
2.  As an option, keeps stats
3.  Auto hole advance.

Does it do Auto Advance now?  That's what I hated about 18 Birdies.

I have been very interested in the Decades golf system.  I play most of my golf on about 5 courses.  Is Decades a system that you can just buy just one course at  a time or is it an annual thing?

DECADE isn't really specific to a course.  As part of the membership you can print yardage books for courses but that is only a small part.   DECADE is about how to play any course and how to remove emotion from your decision making.   They offer a free one month trial you can can sign up with having to specify a payment method.  There are also some videos on YouTube that explain the basics.
