There are also brands like Stick, Tour Edge, Robin Golf that have good value sets. Cobra included. Some shops will even have Callaway sets. Wilson is another one that comes to mind.

I suppose I'm real enough a golfer to say that I started with a Wilson Prostaff set (woods, hybrids and irons, had to buy a putter and bag separately)—minimal investment at the time. I took it to my teaching pro. He took a look at them and said, "Yep, these are definitely good enough to get you started."

If I were to do it again, I'd probably go about it the same way and get a Wilson set. I recall it was cheaper than other OEM sets. I remember Rick Shiels saying something about how OEMs take past designs and apply them to their complete set offerings, so I'd definitely go with any of those guys.

I’ll second Tour Edge as a good one to look at for sets. The pro shop at my local country club keeps their junior and women’s sets in stock and orders men’s sets in regularly as well. I got one of the junior sets just recently for my son and the quality of the clubs, bag and headcovers are really nice.

I didn't see what your current clubs are.  newer isn't always better.   I've seen some really nice sets at garage sales, sometimes a nice worn in but not worn out set offers the greatest value .  Simon from (SAS Golf) on You tube offers great advice about the value of used clubs and how to find them ( mostly on ebay)   goodluck and I hope you to get enjoy this Game as much as I have.

I'll third the Tour Edge.  They pack latest tech into their clubs but at a way lower cost than you would expect for what you get.  Look at Tour Edge  E series (E722, E723...). E series are game improvement.  Their C series is geared to a more advanced pro/competitive golfer. They even customize for length, lie, grip size, etc, included in the cost.  They will be a couple bucks more than a stock off the shelf package set but in the end you'll be better off, will play better, and will not be looking for the"next set" so quickly as you evolve your game.  You'll use them longer.  Just have a good idea of your flex, length, etc., before you order.

My suggestion is basically look for something in the game improvement/high lauch catagory and really forgiving - you can usually find some used good clubs at places like 2nd Swing and others

The issue with suggesting clubs is that everyone is different - look for something that looks good to your eye right now, because if you do not liike the way your clubs look you will not be satisfied and confident

Also no need to buy new right now either - try a used set of like the Tour Edge, TaylorMade, Callawy or Cobra in that game improvement

As others noted, plenty of decent value boxed sets out there.

I was in your position when I started and got a Walter Hagen boxed set from Dicks. I quickly replaced the irons with used Callaways and the driver with a used Cobra. I'd probably opt to go the used route right out of the gate if I had to start all over again. This way you get an entire bag that may be better suited for you and you have a better value all around. You may end up spending a few hundred more BUT the quality/value ratio will be much higher.

New Wilson iron set with steel shafts. I see a lot of the beginner sets you mention have graphite shafts for slow swing players. You may outgrow graphite shafts in a few months, and certainly the graphite shafts in a very cheap package will not be of high quality (probably too whippy). I'd start with steel.

I'd look for a game improvement set a few years old. Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220H comes to mind. I used to carry a 7i from that set as a 2nd, stronger lofted, 7i above my set 7-9i.

You can get the full 10 club set with stiff flex steel on RockBottomGolf right now for about $65 each. I've seen 6 or 7 iron sets for under $500 on various websites.

I strongly recommend finding a set with graphite shafts, as the KBS tgi 70 shafts they use are worth the price of admission and will make the game more enjoyable for a beginner. To this day I hit that 7i further in terms of raw distance than others I've played since, including G25 ping and Callaway Apex '19. Accuracy is more tuned in with the Apex, but I saw an 8 yard distance loss on my 7i.

Playing golf can be an investment and this is what I always recommend to someone who is going to begin this trek.  Go see a teaching pro for group lessons which are the cheapest lessons unless you prefer one on one.  Places like Goodwill have individual clubs for like $3 that you can pick up and you only need three or four clubs.  Maybe a three wood, 7, 9 irons and a putter irons to take some lessons.  Let him teach you the basics of the game.  You may find that you do like he game and do not want to do what it takes be play.  Then you have very little invested in the game.  If you find it is for you then invest in a good used set.  The pro can help you make a selection and possibly find them.

If you don't have golf shop nearby that sells used clubs, I recommend going online to ebay.  New clubs lose value rather quickly unless they are a special top end set or specific club.  Look for a used set by Wilson, Callaway, Ping, or TaylorMade.  You can get a set of "player improvement clubs," which are the ones with a wider bottom and thicker back, that are about 3 to 4 years old for a fraction of their original price.  Unless you are a senior (75+), stay away from "super enhancement clubs," which generally look like a set of hybrids and have super flex shafts.  Used clubs may need to be regripped, which can typically cost around $8 to $11 per club.  This includes the price of the grip and installation.  If you're daring enough, you can go online and learn how to regrip your own clubs.  This will save a few bucks.  You'll eventually reach a point where you'll want to get fitted for new clubs.  However, getting fitted without a golf game is a waste of money.

Regripping is one of the reasons I prefer to use established e-commerce sites that I trust over e-bay for golf clubs.

This is a massive, massive fallacy. While I agree that the W/S set in the post is definitely a good deal, this outdated notion of graphite only being for slow swingers needs to die a quick death. It's simply not true.

@russtopherb I myself play with Mitsubishi MMT (hybrid) shafts, part graphite part steel. But think of the quality of the graphite shafts in a set of clubs that costs only $400 for 13 of them. They are going to be whippy as heck. My 17-year-old nephew is just picking up golf and there is no way I would get him a cheap starter set with graphite shafts in the irons. Do some research before you respond next time.

I've done plenty of research, thanks. I also have played with multiple graphite-shafted iron sets. I stand by my comments that graphite shafts are only for slow/old players is a fallacy. The last thing a new golfer who's looking for gear recommendations needs is bad/false advice.

I myself play with Mitsubishi MMT (hybrid) shafts, part graphite part steel.

You guys are just talking about 2 different things when you say "graphite shaft" you're actually both right.

The idea that good players don't use graphite is an old concept with the advancement OEMs have made in their graphite offerings.

But certainly a set that costs $30 a club for 13 new clubs with the bag and headcovers included probably won't include the latest greatest tech.

hey guys im new to golf and i been using some garage sale clubs but i wanted to make an investment in y own set

ive read many blog posts, articles whatever https://grahamgolfclub.com/best-golf-club-sets-for-beginners-in-2023the-ultimate-guide/

like this one above.and many others 2 sets i keep seeing acorss the board are the callway strata and the wilsons set...

i almost pulled the trigger on the strata rn its on amazon for less than 400 .. seems to have good value but also wanted some real feedback from some real golfers and not just some webpage.. so i guess my question is do y"all reccomend the strata or wilsons clubs? please keep in mind value as i really dont want to spend a fortune. thx in advance...

Hard to say, your garage sale gear might be a better option at this time, but sticking strictly to your question I would go with Wilson-graphite from your list as it's the cheaper option.  But I say that with additional thoughts.  From my experience  complete set-and-bag graphite options from big box stores, etc., are pretty but not the most durable or well put together, sticks for folks hitting everything but the sweet spot, AND practicing a lot on hard mats, it's only a matter of time until the head and shaft say bye-bye to each other.

Good hand action comes from good body action.

Maltby easy choice for irons

Steel or graphite

https://www.golfworks.com/maltby-ke4-max-iron-pak-mpf-graphite/p/pma0337ps/

Otherwise, I will agree with Wilson staff, Tour Edge and older ping sets like G25- G400

Maltby ke4max is the easy choice. Im very happy with these irons.

The new TS3 forged heads I just ordered 9 and pw to try a mixed set. Theyre also a great choice.

Otherwise, for beginners you can get great sets of Adams clubs from 2014 for very cheap and theyre just as forgiving as anything and basicly = TaylorMade .

The best first set would be a ladies set from a CHARITY shop, your going to be lucky just making contact with the ball. Start with a long putter swing and progress from there, I took a girlfriend to a driving range got 50 balls and she was chipping 30-ish metres when we finished quite straightish plus she was happy as you could imagine  and so was I later lol...

I’m a hacker who loves nothing more than to change how I play, be that grips shafts and heads its all fair game lol…

They say people learn from their mistakes, or you could learn from mine. Go somewhere and at least find out what type of club and what flex shaft you need, If you get the wrong flex your learning curve could get even harder.  Many golf specialty stores sell last years or even years before " premium " clubs brand new at steeply discounted prices, I have seen some steals on Mizuno irons and they make quality irons.  A set of new 2 year old "premium " clubs that are the right flex and type for you game is much better than a generic beginner set IMO.

I second this. While I'm not a beginner golfer, I made this set for my dad 5i-GW. He used them for the first time last Tuesday and had the best round in a LONG time. Can't recommend them enough.
