Love watching match play and pretty sad they're getting rid of this format. Hopefully they can figure out a tournament to reintroduce it so you don't have to just wait for the president and Ryder cups, which I'm super pumped for this year. Also love seeing Rickie and J Day making noise again. Cheers!

Be honest have you ever in your life gone driver straight to putter?

I was talking to a mate about this drive tpday and it's insane to think that you get to you second shot on a par 4 and you have a putter in your hand.

I have only gone driver putter a couple of times, I have a couple of short par 4s on my local courses, one is 280 and one is 295 or so... every now and then I get luck and find the green... and proceed to 3 putt

If I ever drove a green on a par 4 I would be terrified of that putt haha

For the first time in my life actually this past Tuesday. A very short par 4 with a large green, landed about 35 feet from the hole though not within 3 feet like that!

There's a few par 4's that I play which are relatively short.  But I've only ever hit the green once lol

...I missed the eagle putt.  Easy two putt birdie though.

probably a dozen times.  During the winter/wet weather we sometimes play up a set of tees which brings some holes into play with driver.   Longest one that I have hit was like 353; kind of pushed the shot and it went through a gap that funneled the ball to the hole…..I didn’t carry the green like Rory😂.    Yes, I three putted that hole.  No eagles, and probably a 60/40 birdie par ratio.

Driver to 3 putt happens a lot in my rounds. Sometimes it's a bogey on a par 3 playing 210 ish. Sometimes I can hit my fade around a short dogleg right par 4 playing 240ish tee to green.

Most of the time I'm putting from the fringe because it's hard to stop a drive on a green. A very few times I've stuck one close enough to make the eagle or birdie putt.

I find I score better if I tone those drives down and don't try to reach. I can pull my driver on an overswing and a miss left on dogleg right can be purgatory. My 52° game is just cleaner than my putter ability right now, so I'd honestly rather be pitching from 35 yards than putting from the fringe 45' away.

So that's the group stages done. There was some great match ups in there, I will try to find a highlights video to post.
The pro's going through to the round of 16 are:

  • Scottie Scheffler (of course he is)
  • Billy Horschel
  • Rory McIlroy (they should have put him straight through after that drive)
  • Patrick 'The Tool Man' Cantlay
  • Max Homa
  • Xander Schauffele
  • Andrew Putnam
  • Matt Kuchar (Kuuuuuuuuuch)
  • Jason Day
  • Kurt Kitayama
  • J.J Spaun
  • Mackenzie Hughes (under dog win here)
  • Sam Burns
  • Lucas Herbert
  • Cameron Young
  • J.T Poston

Some fantastic names there and some highly interesting match ups to be made.
A couple of things that surprised me from the group stages:

  • Jon Rahm losing to Rickie Fowler. Look, Fowler is one of my favourite golfers but he's had an average few years and Rahm is on fire. I would have thought that match was only going one way.
  • Will Zalatoris not winning a single match. Maybe he's still recovering from his back issues, but it's certainly not a great look with The Masters so close.
  • Jason Day winning all 3 of his matches. Day is back, baby! He's been playing and I knew he'd do well, but with Morikawa in his group, I didn't think he'd win every match.
  • J.J Spaun winning every match. He played some great golf at the start of the year in Hawaii (must have been the flowery shirts), but since then he hasn't really made much of an imapct. He had Fitzpatrick, Theegala, and Min Woo Lee in his group, that's three heavy hitters right there.
  • Mackenzie Hughes winning his group. Like J.J Spaun, I wouldn't have picked hughes over Spieth and Lowry in his group.
  • Lucas Herbert winning all 3 and in the same group Tyyrell Hatton losing all 3. For both of them their last outing was The Players; Herbert shot 82 and 85 and missed the cut by a wide margin and Hatton finished solo 2nd. Now they seem to have switched. Just goes to show you can never count a player out...... or in.
