Wow, I can't believe your new Stealth HD irons look like that!  My first thought was...fake irons?  I don't think I've ever seen this from any club, much less a Taylormade.

I'm sure you got them from a reputable place, so it almost has to be a manufacturer's defect, right?  Let us know how this turns out...

BTW, gaming my new (2021)P790's tomorrow.  I've played them a few times over the winter, but with hard greens and fairways.  Really anxious to see how I do with them, especially since I played really well last season with the TM M-6 irons.

The first few times out with them, it was so cold it was hard to get a feel for them.  Today, it was a gorgeous 60-degree and sunny day, light winds 5-10mph.

These things feel amazing!  Pretty good distances on misses, but wow - even though the P790's are ~+2 degrees difference than my former M6's, I saw no loss in distance.

When it's hit pure, it's the most satisfying feeling I've ever had with an iron!  And misses give the feedback that I want too - yet still fly respectable distance.

Loving it!!

Longer post in the "What Have You Tested" thread, but just wanted to say I tried out the latest iteration (2022? 2021?) P790s, and the Stealth HD's (more just for fun, since I've never swung an iron in that category), and man...the 790s were like a unicorn.  Could've been the KBS Tour Lite 100's in there (I game the Nippon 105 in S, so a pretty similar weight), but...it felt like I just couldn't miss with them.  I've kind of avoided them in the past, since ... I honestly don't know - maybe bias?  Somehow I just thought they were a bit gimmicky, and I see them advertised ALL the time, but wow.

I'm going to have to try out the Sub-70 699 V2, as well, to see if there's a similar feel for considerably less $$.

As for the Stealth HD's, they weren't really my cup of tea - had a hard time getting over the top-line, and (and I'm willing to bet the shaft didn't help here) I just couldn't seem to get good contact with them, and even when I did, the distance was not even close to the 790's (but to be totally fair, the shafts were VERY different (KBS Max 85 MT, in reg, I think) so this is not an apples-to-apples comparison, I realize).

Curious to see how this test continues along!

Agree on the looks of Stealth HD, I like the look of the original Stealth irons much better.

But for me now, it's the 2021 P790's all the way!

The P790s are a freak of nature and I can see how they were TaylorMades all-time sale leader when they came out.  Awesome sticks!

I have some good news on the Stealth HDs. I sent an email to TaylorMade concerning the blemish on the 5 iron and received a message yesterday confirming a brand new one is on the way! That's standing behind your product and I have to give Taylormade a HUGE attaboy for customer service.  You guys rock! 💣

@GolfSpy_SAM  " I just couldn't seem to get good contact with them, and even when I did, the distance was not even close to the 790's"  You would think being in the SGI category it would be easier to make solid contact more frequently than less.

I know! I'm gonna guess it was more shaft-related than anything. It struck me as odd as well. But the real story was the 790's performance 😄

Great customer service and solid products make golfers happy campers!

I'm taking the P790s out this morning to give the Stealth HDs their chance to compete for bag time.  As much as I respect the shot-making the P790s provide I have to keep it real with my age and skill level becoming a factor in my equipment choices.  I'll be 73 this year and swing speed, coordination, balance, and ball striking will be the ultimate factor in what stays in my bag.

A little off topic but has anyone swung the different years' models of the P790's?  I believe I have the 2019 P790's in black but not completely sure on the year?  Just was curious in their changes over the different versions that have come out.  I also need to get re-gripped as I have the standard Tour Velvets.  I like the feel and look of the tour wrap 2g, but am concerned about the humidity here in WI and my hands getting sweaty. I am currently trying to decide between the MCC, MCC Plus 4 or the CP2 Wrap.  I also have the Dynamic Gold S300 (105) black iron shafts and am looking to upgrade the current shaft, but would like to keep the shaft black for the all black look if possible.

Any recommendations on grip or iron shaft?

I thought the black p790s came out in 2021?   My preference on grips are the CP2 wraps.

I  had a good day with the Stealth HDs and for the forseeable future they will take precedent in my bag.  I have a big outing to attend April 16 in the north Georgia mountains and  the fargiveness (see what I done) 😆will be much appreciated.

Having used both the Taylormade 2017 P790 and the 2023 HD irons, I can attest to the latter's significant improvement. The incorporation of new technology like SpeedFoam resulted in more consistent ball speed, increased forgiveness, and a more stable feel. The updated design also makes them a top choice for those who value style and performance. Overall, the Taylormade 2023 HD irons are an excellent upgrade for any golfer.

I had another solid ball-striking day with the HD irons. The more bag time I have with them, the clearer I see the benefits they provide.

I am not sure I guess to be honest on when they came out.  I bought them for a fundraiser for a hs golf team and cannot remember.  Anyone know how I could check?  I think I am going cp2 on my irons and mc+4 on the woods.  Just can't decide what to do on the wedges yet.  I also have the dynamic gold s300 stock stiff shafts in these.  Any idea what would be more of a premium shaft to look to upgrade to or that they would recommend?

Ok, guys & gals I have had my little experiment with the P790s and now I'm selling them over in the buy/sell/trade section for someone else to enjoy.  The Stealth HDs simply work better for my aging old arse so I have to suck it up and go with more forgiveness.

If ya interested to can jump over to the sale section and pick these beauties up!

Snap a pic or two of the iron heads and post here - there should be enough visual difference between the 2017/2019/2021 heads that the sleuths around these parts can tell you what's what 🙂

As for shafts, I'd highly recommend going to a store that has the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer - it's a SUPER handy tool that will point you in the right direction for shafts - it may not get it exactly right, but it should point you towards shafts that have a feel that you're looking for.  Often, finding the right weight/flex is the only thing that matters, and you won't need to worry as much about "premium" - that can be pretty misleading.  More expensive definitely doesn't mean better in a LOT of cases.

Looks like those are the ones released in 2018 - so effectively the 2017 model that was refreshed for 2018 with the black design.  2019's refresh got rid of "Taylormade" and instead went with the "T" button, and then 2021 has the slightly sleeker look (putting it more in line with the p770 and P7MB style.

@ole gray I need to come see these irons in action! It's been over 10 years since we last played at Lake Jonesco. Maybe we can get Randy to join us and we'll play a round sometime this summer.

@ole gray I need to come see these irons in action! It's been over 10 years since we last played at Lake Jonesco. Maybe we can get Randy to join us and we'll play a round sometime this summer.

Sounds like a plan to me.  It won't be Lake Jonesco unless Randy wants to play there. I live in Watkinsville, Ga now. and play at Lane Creek.

Yeah I remembered you had moved further north. Works better for me, I'm still in Ellijay. We'll figure something out soon, would love to play with y'all again.

I'm playing up in the north Georgia mountains this weekend at Kingswood CC.  We have a bunch of guys that get together three times per year up there and have a blast.

  • 2 weeks later...

While waiting for a club to be re-gripped at Golf Galaxy today, I spent about 10 minutes hitting a Stealth HD 7-iron with the stock graphite shaft in senior flex. While I didn't see any distance gain over my Ping G710 7-iron, I did find that it was much easier to hit consistently and got better height. Having come to the conclusion that I should use senior flex shafts in all of my irons, I'll be replacing the G710s, mostly in the coming year and the Stealth HD is definitely on my short list.

Ping G400 Max 10.5* - Alta CB SR flex

Ping G425 SFT 5W (19*) - Alta CB Slate SR flex

Ping G430 5H (26*) and 6H (30*) - Alta CB 70 regular flex

Ping G710 7i-W - Recoil 80 F3 shaft

Sub70 286 48* and 52* - Recoil DART 75 F3 shaft

Cleveland CBX4 58* - Recoil 95 F3 shaft

Odyssey Original 2-Ball White Hot counterbalanced (lead tape in the head, Super Stroke grip with 50-gram weight)

Other: Vice Pro or Maxfli Tour; Shot Scope X5; True Linkswear; Callaway Org 7 bag; Clicgear 3.5+
