I mark mine based on a 2 letter grading system which is based on ball model and condition. I play 9 holes by myself about 2 times a week and I am almost always waiting on group, this gives me plenty of time to look for balls in the deep rough.

Once I clean a ball up, I first put a letter based on what tier the golf ball is in (the first letter will be one of these: S, A, B, C, F).

My tier list guideline.

  • S tier: Premium models like the Prov1(x), AVX, TP5(x), WS Triad, and various Bridgestone and Srixon balls.
  • A tier: Non premium balls but they must have 3 pieces or more AND a urethane cover (like the Srixon Q Star Tour) .
  • B tier: Ball must have 3 or more pieces OR a urethane cover (like the Callaway ERC Soft) .
  • C Tier: Golf balls that don't make it to B tier but still not trash balls (like the Callaway Warbird and Supersoft)
  • F tier: Golf balls similar to nitros.

The next letter is based on condition ranging from A-D.

Condition guidelines

  • A - Nearly brand new.
  • B - Minor scratches but the cover finish is still shiny.
  • C - Bigger scratches, possibly some discoloration, finish not very smooth.
  • D - Major gouges or scratches, heavy discoloration, finish in very bad condition.

Example above. I only mark the year on Titleist Prov1s, Prov1x's, and AVXs.

Line over the ProV1 & black dots all around the # of the ball.  Usually 3 or 4, sometimes Red, dots ... Red on one side, Black on the other.  No confusion on who's ball it is.  Except for the idiots that don't look at the ball before they hit it.  Or the one's that hit it because they don't care.  But that's for another thread 😆

I use several of the great stencils from Tin-Cup dot com.  My favorite is the American Flag that I use in the summer and the snowflake that I use in the winter.  With the snowflake, I use 3 different colors (red, blue, and green) with each sleeve of balls.

There are several ways to mark your golf ball on the course to help identify it:

Sharpie marker: Many golfers choose to use a permanent marker, such as a Sharpie, to make a small mark or design on the ball. This can help differentiate your ball from others on the course.

Line or arrow: Some golfers prefer to draw a straight line or an arrow on their ball to help with alignment on the green or tee box.

Initials: Another common way to mark your ball is to write your initials on it with a pen or marker. This can be a simple and effective way to distinguish your ball from others.

Stencil: Some golfers use a stencil or stamp to create a more intricate design or pattern on their ball. This can be a fun way to add some personality to your game.

It is important to note that while there are many ways to mark your ball, there are rules and guidelines set forth by the USGA and R&A regarding the size and placement of markings. The marking should not be larger than a half inch in diameter and should not be used to assist in aiming or to distract other players. Additionally, only one mark should be used on the ball at any given time.

Typically circle the number on my ball, but don’t use an alignment aide (normally just use line on ball).

I tend to use a blue Sharpie on even numbered balls (I'm not superstitious, but I'm a little stitious) with 3 dots in connected dimples like a triangle above the "T" on the Titleist. Started doing that in HS golf and never really changed.
