Appreciation Thread (1000 Reputation Milestone)

26 days since I joined up here, just noticed I'm approaching 1000 reputation. I want to mark the occasion with a few (more than a few) thanks and shout outs.

and all the other mods, too many to list, thanks so much for maintaining this wonderful place and making a welcoming environment.

@Golf2Much @Peaksy68 @vandyland @snicerz and all others posting scores and interacting in the Virtual Tournaments, thanks for posting up scores constantly and pressuring me to play better. I will wear the black jacket this week proudly, knowing I won it against such fine people. I promise I will update my handicap index April 1.

To @Connorn2 thanks again for carrying the load and winning us that 2 ball tourney. More virtual hardware for both of us in the future, I hope.

@cksurfdude @EasyPutter @sirchunksalot @IndyBonzo @chisag @cnosil and all the other daily contributors, you all make this all happen as much as anyone. Happy I could join up with you and help build out this sanctuary for our golf ramblings. Thanks also for liking my content so much, it makes me feel liked. I like you all, too.

On that note, a short side story: shout out to the bartender at my local haunt for the impetus to be so active here.

I had a bar I went to 4-5 days a week. The beer was cold and cheap, the pool table was crooked but good enough to play on. The food was horrible but tolerable and quick to arrive the half the time the staff didn't let it sit while they finished socializing.

The bartenders were all dating each other or other employees. The customers were secondary to the employees having a fun hangout. Pretty basic dive bar.

I would go there after golf and chat about my round with 3 or 4 guys I also played pool with. One day one of them brought his boss, a fat blowhard who exaggerated everything he said (He built half the houses in the wealthiest town in my area) and wanted to interrupt everything I said, talking over me to the guy who worked for him. After 20-30 minutes of tolerating him, I told him off, got a little loud and expletive-filled in my speech, but stayed calm and seated the whole time.

The bartender in question, who had exchanged #s with me saying let's golf with a 4 month one-way dynamic of me asking and him making an excuse, comes over and says something to the effect of my mouth is going to get me in trouble. I look over at the bouncer, who I've had more pleasant conversation with than this kid who is paid to entertain me, and I curse him up and down the block. I started with the C word and got worse from there. My tab was paid so I walked out, bartender followed me out and we cursed more in the parking lot.

The following day he texts me a long diatribe on how pathetic I am and no one wants to hear/interact with my long winded, one sided personality. I'm a loser and it should be a wake up call.

So it was. Going there 5 days a week I was as big a loser as him. The fact I was paying and he was getting paid made me the bigger loser. 

Now I play golf and I come home to tell this forum about it. It's so much healthier for me, I feel I've actually helped my chances at longevity. It's not healthy to be around addicts who roll their eyes at everything you say that doesn't involve alcohol, drugs, or sex.

So, long winded one-sided rant over. Looking forward to many more to come.

Happy to have you, and really appreciate the shout-out! Speaking of alcohol, drugs or sex, there are probably threads on here for those, lol - "What are you drinking" covers booze, and the "Club Ho's Anonymous" thread probably covers both drugs and sex ("Hello, my name is Matt, and I would snort my driver head cover if I could").

I'm definitely jealous of your winning the Two-Ball, but very well-deserved

Being new here myself, I echo your appreciation for this place @richk9holes!  And despite warmly embracing the drinks and dive bars myself, I cannot imagine doing that scene 5 days a week, and applaud you for living (somewhat?) more healthily.  I also envy your ability to indulge your golf habit so frequently and doing so well at it (as I type this while eating my lunch from my desk)!

I hope so, too. Hopefully all the new registrations from the testing will jump in on the meet-up threads as well. It would be great to get some groups together to socialize.

@richk9holes full disclosure, I wasn't sure if I was going to like you at the start, nobody gets a free ride and time proves everyone's worth and "likability" and with that said I don't think I have read a more profound recounting of experience than what you've written to start this thread and there is no question about it.  I like you and the brand you come in with, honest, open and real, exactly what is hoped for with everyone.  Thank goodness you are not like me or the threads would be boring faster than a twist drill through pine lumber on a drill press.

Everything happens for a reason, some of which we will never know why or what it was for, others it is obvious in reflection and I think you have this one nailed.

Hmm getting a theme of carpentry going here, so going with it, you are building something good here yourself.  We all come from wherever with only ourselves to share and I think you already know this Forum is full of like minded guys who are totally different from each other with golf as our nexus, our point of convergence.  We keep writing and posting images, videos, whatever and it is what we contribute that makes a difference to everyone who reads and sees what we share.

Going to close this here, my own background before arriving at golf as my peaceful place was through a much darker place than yours and that doesn't matter, nor does how long it was after emerging from the Valley of Death before I finally found MGS forum.  The fact that golf is our serenity and what takes us to loftier places is what matters.  As always, I hope your day has golf as a part of it

Good for you, Richk9holes! As a person that earned my 1 year AA token earlier in March & has a totaled car, expensive divorce, lost careers, and patched-up burnt bridges to show for my drinking history, I commend you!!

Happy to have you on the forum, Rich. Getting out of the cycle of that environment is not easy. I've got some buddies who went down some dark paths and couldn't break out of it, so kudos for you channeling that energy into something positive. This forum is such an awesome place and really glad to hear it's helped you shift your focus on something better! Again, great to have you here!

@richk9holes welcome aboard and make sure you stick around. I have to come to enjoy this community a great deal even when I don't enjoy golf that much. As someone who doesn't get to play golf nearly enough, talking about it is almost like a contact high and always excited to have another active member!

It's been a pleasure having you on here and be a contributing member of the forum. I enjoy reading your posts, whether it's about playing, equipment, or just about your day. I think golf is the best kind of addiction to have, there are a lot of positives that come out of it. Nature, exercise, and friendships are just a few. Even though I have only met one regular contributor in the forum, I consider you all my friends. I'm thankful for the community call every week and being able to actually talk to the ones there. This is one of my happy places and I'm thankful for that.
