How many sets of clubs have you owned in your lifetime

Recommended Posts

I must admit the number seems large. In fact since my posting my wife gave me the oldwaddabout . You know the what about this and what about that. And you know, she’s right. Must add the set of Macgregor MT Tourney’s and the almost embarrassed to say King Snakes. That brings the number of iron sets to 20. For this exercise I am looking at irons only as I have added and deleted drivers, fairway woods hybrid/ rescue clubs and let’s not forget putters . At one time when we were moving, the mover made the mistake of asking if I knew how many putters I had as they had to account for every thing. Unfortunately it was within earshot of my wife. When I said I had no idea he quickly answered, sir you have 158 putters. I told my wife he must be mistaken and I quickly retreated to the garage. And not to continue to beat this to death but watching the Masters today reminded me of yet another set, Titleist DCI irons that I need to add to the mix.

So let’s look at iron sets only:

Campbell Pin Hi 1955

Ben Hogan Edge

Ben Hogan Plus 1

MacGregor MT Tourney

Golfcraft Continental

Spalding Elite

Wilson Staff

Wilson 1200

Custom Build No Name

King Snake

Tommy Armor 845

Ping Eye Two

Titleist DCI

 Callaway Big Bertha

Callaway Fusion

TaylorMade R11s

TaylorMade Burner 2

TaylorMade RSi

Cleveland Tour Action

TaylorMade Sim

Mizuno JPX 921

Wow! That makes 21 sets that I can remember. I guess that mover must have been right.

Not too many in 30+ years actually.

Spaulding executives for all my teen years.

Cleveland Ta3 I bought with $ from my first decent job in my 20s. I took a long break from golf with these gathering dust. About 5 years ago I regripped them and started using them again.

I picked up individual short irons from Ping G25 and Titleist T200 and made a couple mixed sets using the long irons from the Cleveland set during that time.

Finally I bought my current Apex '19 irons about 2 1/2 years ago.

I'm just going with iron sets. If I listed drivers, woods, wedge, hybrids, and putters you would get tired of reading.

My first set was a custom fit set of Cobra knockoffs.

Hi all -

I've had 2 sets new -

TaylorMade Miscela when they came out - full set

PXG 0211x - full set

Put 2 kids through private college so not a lot of extra to treat myself; therefore, the PXG upgrade that was badly needed.  My kids were even telling to "get new clubs, Mom.  These are dinosaurs!"

It is pretty hard to remember.  I took up golf about 20, maybe 25 years ago.  I am now 76 and playing 5 days a week when the weather permits, which is often since I live in SoCal.  I do remember my first set was Prince, a company best known for tennis rackets at the time.  I do not know the model, but they were about $700 with graphite shafts which was similar to Taylormade Burners at the time.  I think my next set was Callaway Razr followed by Callaway XR which I still use.

what's a set of clubs?  Wedges and drivers come and go a lot more often than irons.  Now there hybrids sliding in and out of iron sets.

Ping G10 when I first started playing.
Ping i10 soon after as I was playing regularly and getting better. I played that set on and of for years. I still have them and will probably keep them for a while.
Ping G425 a week or so ago, now that I’m back and working seriously on improving and enjoying the game.

Hmmm… 1st was some undefined kids set when I started group lessons at 5.

Then some hand-me down Hogans from Dad, until they knew I was serious about the game.

First new, fitted full set in high school was Powerbilt Levelumes. Played them (including persimmon woods) until I was the last in the world to switch to metal woods.  I wanted to see my game was improving through skill instead of technology.

Went through a period of infrequent play where I used my brother’s old First Flight irons

Most recent are new Callaway XRs, with second hand Titleist 910D2 driver, 913H 4 hybrid, and a couple Vokey wedges. And it seems GI irons really do improve your (mid handicap) game!  Who knew?

Now that I’m playing more, almost 70 with an 18 index - any suggestions?
