Wilson Duo & Elite 50

Recommended Posts

Played a round with some new Wilson balls today -- played with both the Wilson Duo and the Wilson Elite 50.

Wilson says both are low compression balls suited for slower swing speeds. Don't think I'm that slow - although at 51 we're definitely NOT where we were 20 years ago! Driver SS is in the 100 to 102 MPH range, playing MP-59 irons and my 150 club is usually a 7 iron.

Both balls felt great coming off the driver - on the drives I caught on the screws with the Duo I could swear I could "feel" the ball compressing and coming off the face hot. Good swings were high and straight -- hit over 70% of the fairways on the day, and they were plenty long. On a couple of holes I hit the Duo and a Penta or a Srixon TriSpeed and the Duo was as long if not longer.

With the irons again the best way to describe it as that I felt like I could "feel" the ball compressing on the face. It sounds silly but that's the best way I can describe it. Had been playing some cheap Tommy Armours and MacGregors, as well as Bridgestone E6's lately, and the feel with both of these balls is noticably different from any of those, and from my golf shoes - much better. It made for very solid strikes and, as the round went on, more confidence. And just as long - at least - as the Bridgestones.

Played the Elite (in yellow) and the Duo (in white) on the back 9. The Elite made a slightly different sound off the driver, but it still flew very nicely. Lengthwise it was almost exactly the same as the Duo -- had a couple of holes where the balls were maybe 10 to 12 feet apart on the fairway.

Both felt nice with the putter. My wedge work/short game was a tad off today, so neither ball did much checking up for me today - but that was more me than the ball. I couldn't make the Penta check, either...

I'd say for the price I may have some new favorite balls. $20/doz for the Duo is very sweet, and for $12/doz for the Elite's - well that's stealing.

Now that the weather's getting warmer in Minnesota - will break out the ProV's and see how the Wilson's compare. But for this day - Wilson reigns supreme!

I've been messing around with some Duo's myself and there is no ball that feels quite like it. It almost feels like a Super Ball, very springy.

right about the unique feel...it's really different. Almost feels like the ball wants to stay on the club face for as long as it can before taking off. Almost like a good hit with a tennis racket...

The Elite 50 did feel a bit different, not bad at all - just different. For the price, both balls are pretty amazing. Hope to get out later this week and compare with ProV's.

Barbajo or Matt, would you say that the Duo is longer than your current ball?...Fairways & Greens 4ever...

Hit them side by side with both the Penta and the Srixon TriSpeed - Duo was every bit as long as both. Hard to say if they were seriously longer, but they certainly weren't any shorter. Closest comparisons were that they seemed a tad longer than either the Penta or Srixon. Can't wait for a head to head ProV comparison.

I guess I would have to play golf to know that...something I don't really do much of anymore. :(

But I will have launch monitor numbers soon! :D

Played this morning and compared the Duo to the ProV1. And off the tee the verdict is...

Not a hell of a lot of difference. When hitting both off the tee, I had mishits with the Duo that were nearly as long as good hits with the ProV. Solid strikes with both (didn't have my best driving day) didn't produce any drastic differences -- nothing that made me say "whoa!"

Hydrid and long iron shots - both flew off the club nicely. Not much difference in mid-irons, either. Now the thing that really floors me -- I preferred the Duo over the ProV on shirt iron and wedge shots. I could get both to hop 'n stop...I haven't had much spin-back success with anything other than a Penta, and both of these performed about the same for me. Chipping and putting - had success with both.

As best as I can tell - with MY game (102 driver SS, 7 iron as my 150 club) there ain't a whole hell of a lot of difference between these two. Have played other "low-end" balls -- Tommy Armour chief among them, and the Duo (as well as the Elite 50) outclasses them easily. When it comes to comparing to the big boy balls -- well, for my game there just didn't seem to be much difference today. Hit good shots with both, and bad shots with both -- both hopped 'n stopped for me and good driver swings produced very similar results.

That said - $20/doz vs. $45+/doz? Hmmmmm.....

Something in my head tells me the ProV should be better and that I'm missing something - because the old adage says if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

But I am gonna score me some more Duo's!

I love the Duo and just picked up a dozen elite 50s for pennies on the bay. Wilson Staff balls feel really soft especially the duo with a 40 compression they really are the softest on the market. It's weird to think that with a 2 piece surlyn ball but they are as advertised. The duos are my gamers but I'm going to be testing out the 50s this week in a side by side. I've heard they are very similar the only difference is the duo feels a little softer and you get better action on the greens with the short game...chipping and putti g.

Wow - here's a thread that's come back from nowhere. Had forgotten about it!

And an update - played the new Duo and the new Duo Spin ball from Wilson Staff in January while in Florida.  The new Duo is down to a 28 compression, while the Spin, a 3-piece ball, is at 35.  Really enjoyed the both, as well as the FG Tour Ball - all 3 are in the running for this year's ball, but the Duo Spin is really intriguing.  Will have to see what the numbers say.

Nice review Barb,

I've been playing the Wilson Duo alongside the Hogan Edge. Both low compression two piece balls.  Both provide similar distance and short game results.  I found the Hogan Edge at

http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-1757055/ben-hogan-15-pk-hogan-edge-soft-distance-golf-balls.jsp    for $16.99/15-pk

Maxfli has a new Low Compression at Dick's....called the Maxfli SoftFli....a 35 compression ball

http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=57136166&cp=4406646.4413989.11399842.11025125  at $25/2 dozen

all are about $1 per ball....

Awesome it looks like I need to try their new offerings. I like to get old stock that is new on the bay for cheap but the new duo spin and the hogan edge will definitely be on my radar. Funny thing is I found a duo someone lost in the woods left while looking for an expensive bridgstone Bridgestone and put it in play and loved it more so I said forget the Bridgestones. loll why pay extra for a lesser ball.
