I have 3, not including the pitching wedge. I don't feel like I've truly used them properly but lately I've made a concerted effort to use all my wedges the way they are intended. I use to use my PW as my go to for almost any situation.

Always a hot topic and difficult decision for many. I'm at 4 and seems standard, but I could even add a 5th because the top end of my bag seems fine.

I have two past my PW (47°) two SM7 a 52° and a 58°. The PW is wedge only in name, I use it as a 10 iron, mostly full shots (about 145 yards) and the odd chip-and-roll. The 52° is the Swiss knife of "shortish game" and gets used for everything between a full 130-ish yard shot to pitches as short as 20 yards, and chipped quite often as well. The 58° is the titular for bunkers and flops and chips out of the rough when I try to get stopping power. In rare occasions where the greens are ULTRA-hard, the 58 gets used for pitching from 100 yards in, but I don't like that as I tends to overspin it and it flies too high (and I play on a very windy course most of the time).

Aim small... pray to miss small

I agree with you 100 percent! I now have the Callaway PW, AW and PXG 0311 3X 54 and 58. I could go to 51, 55, 59 to complement the Callaway irons.

One length Cobra set with PW, GW, & SW … there is a massive distance gap between my GW & SW that causes me to have to finesse a GW instead of hitting a full SW that won’t get there.  Some days it seems I hit in the middle of that gap several times a round. Then I have my favorite … 56* Callaway Apex PM grind and a matching 60* I flop over crap or on short side shots. We have several elevations next to greens that can create situation of chipping down to a green slopping away.

Recently purchased the Paridym irons and included the P and A wedge so needed something with higher lofts so decided to go with the Jaws 54 and 58 degree. Love the Paradyms but not a big fan of the Jaws wedges. May go back to the Vokey wedges that I had with my Mizuno irons.

Two in service.

Whatever wedge is with the set I'm using, number #10 on some, or they could be swapped out with a Hogan-wedge or other sand iron.     Then my baby, Cleveland-Rossignol 588, who never met a situation that made it shiver, never met a shot it didn't embrace, and never met a wager it didn't like.  That 588 has paid for itself enough times I could buy 3 sets of PXGs.

Good hand action comes from good body action.

I feel like all the wedge threads are coming across my feed lately and I’m here for it.

My irons are still fairly standard lofts. I currently carry 4 wedges all SM8 Vokey’s 46.10, 50.12, 54.14, 58.12.

The 58 may be swapped out for a 60 with lower bounce at some courses and the 50 is usually for full shots at 120-125 but might be replaced by a utility iron and I’ll learn to flight the 46 into that yardage as it currently goes 135

I’m curious to hear thoughts on gapping between wedges. What do people find gives them the best options on the course?

Currently have PW (41*), 52*, 56*, 60* but thinking of bending my 52* and my 56* down 2* to give me some better gapping.

Difference between my PW and my 52 is about 20 yds and I tend to find myself with a fair number of shots in between that I have to land short with the 52* most of the time.

I could hit a soft PW but find that I don’t have as much control as I’d like. I tend to do ½ and ¾ swings with my 56 and 60 when needed but for some reason don’t have the same confidence with my PW (perhaps the bounce and grind have something to do with it).

Anyway, curious to hear what others have to done to address their gapping.

I used to have the same problem with about 20 yds between my 47 deg PW from the iron set and the 52 deg specialty wedge. Since I now have a 45 deg PW and a 50 deg AW that are part of my iron set and 54 deg and 58 deg specialty wedges, gapping is a lot tighter. My stock gapping is below:

PW -> AW 12 yds

AW -> 54 15 yds

54 -> 58 15 yds

I use the Sub 70 659 CB PW and AW and the 286 54 and 58. Also very happy with their performance! The only thing I’m a little bummed about is I saw that the 659’s didn’t test well in the 2023 mygolfspy iron test!

I am currently sitting at 3 -- the PW and SW that came with the set and a 60* CBX. I am deep into the "replace my irons and wedges" bag overhaul which (as of right now) would move me to 4 wedges.

Callaway rusty -56

A former plus handicapper who must settle for mid 70s to mid 80 scores today.  After taking 10 years off due to back issues, my driver length has decreased by 40 yards on average.  I look forward to any training aids, shaft improvements, club enhancements to get back part of what was lost.

For me the answer is four, but it depends!

Until recently, my irons were G30's and I carried pitching wedge (45 degrees) with my three Edison wedges (50, 55 and 60 degrees).

As a recent MGS Callaway Paradym X reviewer, I had to change my wedges to accommodate the inherent stronger lofts.  With the Paradym X pitching wedge at 41 degrees, I added their "A" approach wedge at 46 degrees.  That meant one club had to go out of my bag.  After some trial and error, I choose pulling the 60 degree wedge out and putting the 3 wood back in the bag.  So now, I still have four wedges (Paradym X PW and AW and Edison 50 and 56 degree wedges), just a different mix.

Ping G430 Max driver 10.5 degrees with an Alta Quick45 gram senior shaft
Callaway Epic 3 wood, Project X Evenflow Green 45 gram senior shaft

Ping G 20.5 degree 7 wood, with a stock Alta 65 gram senior shaft

3 normally at my main course.

1.  PW from the Ping I 500 set.

2.  Mizuno S5, about 7 yrs old now, 52 x 09 GFF.  I have a new one waiting for its turn.

3.  An ancient but trusty sand wedge, an original Hogan Sure Out, with a flange bigger than a small flounder.

I own 3 other Mizunos for use in other club lineups.  I use a chipper instead of a higher loft wedge for shots near the green.  I have practiced with Vokey and Cleveland, they can't push Mizuno out of first place.

Drv: PXG 0211, Evnflo Riptide CB Senior, Callaway 454 TI (2004) 10 and an 11, regular flex.

3W: Callaway Steelhead Xr  Tensei Blue CK 55 gram senior. TM Burner Superfast 3.0 M flex.

5W : Titleist TSi 1 on Aldila Ascent 40 regular flex.

Driving Iron: Mizuno MP 18 MMC 3 18 degree, on Mamiya Recoil reg flex.

4 iron:  forged Mizuno Fly-Hi, 24 degree hollow body.

6 - PW: Ping I 500, on Recoil reg flex.

Gap: 52/9 GFF Mizuno S5, Lob: 60/6 GFF Mizuno T7.

Sand: Ancien Regime 56/12 Hogan Sure Out, Apex shaft. Heavy sole.

Chipper:  Ancien Regime Don Martin "Up n In" bronze or copper. 🙂

My setup is pretty simple: 50 deg Cleveland CBX Zipcore bent to 49, 54.08 Vokey SM4, Cleveland RTX Zipcore 58 all with Project X shafts.  Everything with DG shafts including the wedge shafts from Vokey feel heavy and dead to me so I immediately swap the shaft on any purchase.
