this will definitely be an interesting one. I'm not sure I'm sold on the need to zip things on and off but maybe I'm missing something....

This feature intrigued me initially as I thought about vacations or travel.  Space is always nice and seems to always be needed. For quick rounds walking I am really looking to lighten the bag where I can. Like @carter18 said earlier I am planning on covering this in my review especially the ease of use.

Following along closely and interested to hear how these bags compare to the current gamers. Ping Hoofers seem hard to beat!

What’s going on everyone! My name is Carter Holmes and I am super excited to be a part of the 2023 MGS Forum Test of the Bag Boy ZTF Bag. I live in Nashville, TN and have played golf in some iteration since around 1997. I hail from a small town south of Charlotte, Belmont in The Old North State otherwise known as North Carolina.  I never played competitive golf growing up and really didn’t start playing regularly until college in the early 00s. I moved to Nashville in 2014 to marry my beautiful bride and have played somewhere north of 50 rounds per year since. This time of year, when the weather is typically nice, and the evenings are longer I try to walk 9 after work a few times a week along with my typical weekend round. I joined the TGA in 2014 and started tracking my GHIN (handicap index). From that date I was on a determined path to single digits. I soon realized that a 9.9 handicap still translated to many disappointing shots. The handicap has ebbed and flowed over the subsequent years, but I am always studiously searching for the next swing thought that will get me over any current plateau.

I selected the white BagBoy as I currently game a gray Ping Hoofer Lite. One of the tests I want to explore is how the light color holds up over many sweaty, muddy rounds and how easy it is to clean/ maintain its fresh from box appearance. I am intrigued by the removable pockets as I often lighten the load when walking. I will attempt to provide adequate pocket size comparison and also report on the Top-Lok technology and other technological features.

I have not previously gamed a BagBoy bag and look forward to further researching and comparing it to the Ping Hoofer. (I purchased the Hoofer after review. MGS often has rated extremely high in the 4 divider carry category). I expect this to be a great alternative with the added benefit of being able to remove the pockets to use as more of a “Sunday” bag. I plan to walk or ride a minimum of 27 holes a week during the test and will work to provide a thorough review.

I will keep up to date on the forum feed and work to answer any additional questions that arise that either myself or my cohorts have not adequately addressed previously. Thanks so much for the opportunity. I hope to provide an enjoyable review experience for everyone!

KEY FEATURES

Two removable pockets to cater the bag to your round

4-Way organizer top with full-length individual dividers

Swivel clip attachment system for easy shoulder strap separation

Top-Lok ® technology, a patented bag-to-cart attachment system

Unboxing:

First Impressions: BagBoy ships super quick. I had notice of shipment and the product at my door less than two days after the order was placed. I ordered the white bag because I know it has the most potential to show wear and dirt/grime. I will be testing on the durability of appearance. The bag is extremely light and size is what you would typically expect from a 4 divider bag. Zippers all work well and the bag seems to be well manufactured. The material feels like a lightweight rain jacket. First impression is that it will be easy to clean off if you do indeed get it dirty.

ZTF: The zip to fit feature is certainly innovative. The bag has smaller pockets under the removable pockets although they are slightly smaller and will not hold as much gear. The zipper works well and the pockets are very easy to remove. The back of the pockets have velcro loops that attach to a permanent coupling on the bag itself. After some trial and error I determined it is easier to attach the velcro prior to zipping the pocket on when replacing back onto the bag. When the pockets are loaded, it does take some getting used to to get the velcro through the loops. I will provide a video of this soon.

Swivel Clip Strap Attachment: This is similar to other bags on the market and is a good concept. The clips on the bag and on the straps are plastic. I worry about the longevity of the clip as that is the weak point of the system. My bag came with one of the clips broken. MGS was quick to contact the manufacturer and they already have a replacement strap shipped out which I should receive soon.

Bagclip2.jpg.92d77103b3888f0a94e67173cbc974ff.jpg

Top-Lok: I do not have a push-cart, any typically carry when I walk. I intend to borrow my neighbor’s cart to test this feature as well as review how it interacts with a cart and the cheaper pull carts some of the local munis have available for use.

Did you mess with the ZTF pocket much? I'm packing for a Missouri trip this coming Monday and I am trying to decide the logistics of everything.

I had them on and they held up! Where you going?? I had them on to carry extra water and sunscreen it was hot I stored gloves and extra balls on the inside zip pockets so they stayed on with all the extra gear! But when I’m at home no the water bottle holder doesn’t fit my bottle and the pockets are to mall for my shoes so if you are catering extra gear I would leave them on! But bring them just in case! They are easy to pack!

Headed to Branson to play the Big Cedar courses.  Part of an annual guys trip. Yea, I have found that my water bottle doesn't fit the sleeve either...but the pockets have been pretty good.  I'll need all of the space, good to know that they held up well!

Good stuff @OdinSnipes414! I'm glad to see the bag performed well for you even though the zip on pickets seemed to be hard to keep closed and you're not using them right now. I do find it curious they don't have a cooler pocket, that just seems like something that would be almost a no brainer.

I do love the green color you went with, it looks sharp and seems to stand out from a lot of other bags I've seen.

Unboxing:

First Impressions: (5 of 5 Stars) BagBoy ships super quick. I had notice of shipment and the product at my door less than two days after the order was placed. I ordered the white bag because I know it has the most potential to show wear and dirt/grime. I will be testing on the durability of appearance. The bag is extremely light, and size is what you would typically expect from a 4-divider bag.

The zipper works well, and the pockets are very easy to remove. The back of the pockets have Velcro loops that attach to a permanent coupling on the bag itself. After some trial and error, I determined it is easier to attach the Velcro prior to zipping the pocket on when replacing back onto the bag. When the pockets are loaded, it does take some getting used to, to get the Velcro through the loops.

Top-Lok: I do not have a pushcart, and typically carry when I walk. I intend to borrow my neighbor’s cart to test this feature as well as review how it interacts with a cart and the cheaper pull carts some of the local munis have available for use. The bag fits well on a riding cart. There is no specific spot to run the strap through, but it works well if you run through the handle. I have found it stays secure and does not move much throughout your round.

Aesthetics (4 out of 5 Stars)

The bag looks great. I ordered the white to see how well it held up over time. The material is water resistant and lightweight. As you might expect, the white does get smudged and shows dirt more than any of the other options. It does clean off well buy will start to develop a grimy look the longer it is in use.

The Numbers (4 out of 5 stars)

I deducted a point here because of the plastic material of the quick release shoulder straps. My first strap was delivered broken and that is clearly a weak area in the design.

The ZTF zip to fit feature works as described and does allow you to drastically lighten the overall load of the bag. It can be a bit cumbersome removing or re-attaching when the pockets are full. Also, if you do not fully seat the top of the zipper, it tends to come unzipped over the course of a round.

The top lok technology works as designed especially when using a bag boy pushcart.

On The Course (4 out of 5 stars)

The bag is lighter than other bags in the category and the kick stand works well when carrying. It is designed to ride well on push carts and I had limited issues when using a riding cart. While the bag does have a water bottle pocket, it is on the small side and not user friendly when using a larger water bottle. I drink a ton of water on the course. The additional time it takes to get a large bottle in and out during a round led me to take a star here.

The Good, the bad, the in-between (3 out of 5 stars)

Overall, the ZTF is a great concept allowing the user to lighten the load for a quick 9 after work or when carrying. When choosing to play with the pockets on, there is a bit more care needed to ensure the zippers are fully seated and all of the Velcro is properly in place. In the middle of a round, the last thing a player needs on their mind is the potential of losing a pocket or having the water bottle fall out.  The manufacturer should look to address the material used in the quick release shoulder straps as this appears to be a weak point in the design. I was very impressed with the quick ship time from the manufacturer especially when they sent my replacement strap. BagBoy is a very friendly company from a customer service perspective. The bag sits well on your body when carrying and is designed well to stay in place when riding or using a pushcart.

Play it or Trade it? (4 out of 5 stars)

I will keep the ZTF in my rotation, but it will most likely not be a daily driver.  The removable pockets are a unique feature, however with the additional attention to detail needed to ensure they are seated properly I would not use it in a competitive round requiring my entire focus. If I owned a BagBoy pushcart, this would be a match made in heaven and I would have a hard time moving to an alternate option.

Conclusion

BagBoy has provided a unique entry into the 4-divider light carry bag division. The Zip to Fit pockets add an interesting wrinkle and provide options when determining what to take to the range VS playing 9, 18, etc. in either casual or competitive rounds. The aesthetic of the bag is spot on and assimilates into the arsenal of any level of player. If you currently use a BagBoy pushcart I would highly recommend as the toplok technology was designed to fit all BagBoy bags perfectly. The water bottle pocket is on the small side which will be a deterrent for some. If you play grips larger than standard, there is potential for getting clubs a bit stuck when removing or replacing. The manufacturer may look to address a few areas in future updates. The material used in the shoulder strap release system appears to be a weak point in its current iteration. With the removable pockets loaded down, the zipper will occasionally move if not properly seated in installation. All of the reputed features work as advertised and I would recommend the ZTF version of the BagBoy bag especially if you already use a BagBoy pushcart.

Final Score (24 out of 30 stars)
