3. Golf balls also seem to be trending upwards too. Do you feel there is a reasonable cap for how much a dozen balls should cost?

I feel like balls are approaching a point where it’s difficult to swallow. $40 has always felt like it was too expensive and now it’s considered a budget price.

I live in Goodyear AZ. Apparently, the only business we seem to be able to attract are large warehouses. We had a local course torn up so a warehouse and Pilot truck stop can be put in it's place. So although it isn't housing, losing golf courses to other uses is a thing.

I'm trying to understand the logic - bring in golfers to spend money vs boxes?

FOr that reason alone I'm sticking with DTC golf balls; Snell, Vice, etc. Lot's of value for the price.

I totally get that. I think I have 5-10 more good years in me where a premium ball is justifiable but once my swing spped dips under 100mph I'll more than likely go with a budget friendly ball like Snell or Kirkland.

This is why eBay is my go-to when buying balls. I typically always buy 4a balls, looks almost new for a fraction of the price.

Hi everyone- I'm hearing more and more that golf courses are being shut down, torn up for housing? What's the trend and where do you see this going? Any specific area impacted more than others?

In SC the Myrtle Beach area has been hot hard with courses closing for housing.  Also, Greenville has had 3 courses close for subdivision development.

I agree. $40 bucks is my max amount for balls. I don't play well enough to justify spending more. Being retired has it's advantages but rolling in the dough isn't one of them. We live comfortably and happy to spoil 6 grand kids, but there are limits. Paid for dinner on the run for 5 at an arches place and paid over 45. OMG. When did that go up? Anyway, I live within my means and that involves golf as well. Heck, I'm just happy I can still walk my rounds.

Piggybacking off @Golfspy_CG2 are drivers costing too much or are golfers getting fed up with prices I have a few follow ups that kinda relate.

1. In your opinion where will golfers find the best value for their money? Ie clubs, golf balls, accessories (gps, rangefinder etc)

2. Realistically will we see DTC drivers truly compete with the big boys from a data perspective? Market share will forever be a struggle.

3. Golf balls also seem to be trending upwards too. Do you feel there is a reasonable cap for how much a dozen balls should cost?

1. Practice.  Sure equipment has some impact but I think the most cost effective aspect is practice.

2. I don't believe DTC overall will ever match the OEM. Too much money spent on tour pros free equipment just to try and convince me I should buy theirs.  It is hard for me to understand much less accept that we are paying for their freebies. Heck they are the ones making the big bucks.  Doesn't matter the sport. The amount we pay for them is out of this world.

3. I mentioned $40 earlier.

I may have missed this in past communications, I am wondering how long do "New" golf balls last being stored?  I have them stored in the garage that doesn't see too extreme of temperatures. I have a dozen brand new Pro V1's that may be 3 years old and fortunate for me my golf game has improved and I have been maybe losing 1 ball a round.  Trying to go through my inventory to get to these Pro V's lol.

Driver prices are definitely rising and making it harder for a retired educator to upgrade to the newer models.

Tour Edge Exotics has all of last year's equipment on sale 50% off. Their drivers are always one of the fastest on the market, and their fairway woods and hybrids are outstanding. There are plenty of deals out there to be had without dropping $600 on a driver.

You can also try callaway golf pre-owned site. Not exactly 50% off but a lot cheaper for last year or the year before models. Also occasional deals on older generation clubs.

For some reason I recall that stored balls really retained their oomph for up to 5 years. As long as temp extremes were not involved. After that efficiency loss was something like 2-3% per year. At that rate I don't really think I'd notice any degradation until 15 years. 😆

Here's one I don't think I saw previously, how close are we to artificial turf that seriously mimics grass and is affordable?  Also going into the fiberbuilt mat and other high end product, and perhaps where that technology can become more cost effective in the future to become pervasive in ranges and indoor facilities.

Great question, this is a topic that should be very high on the list of tests as hitting off of present-day mats is not a good experience and can be detrimental to developing a good golf swing.

Let's fire this up again as it was great to see some questions from the community answered!

@Tony Covey MGS - does a colored putter help a golfer make more putts?

- what happened to MLA putters? Seem to have fallen off the map.

- I see a ton of Adams ads everywhere and looks like they are doing a massive social media push. Do you think their lineup will continue to be a simpler Idea line or will they expand their lineup in future years.

- how many coffees will be drank during the Golf Ball test this year? Can you give us a over under to make a fun bet on?
