Learning the equipment

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I’ve been playing for 5 years now casually, but last year decided to get more serious. I paid for lessons through golftec, and got fitted for irons, driver, and 3 wood. Between all of that I’ve been about to bring my handicap down from 25+ to 18. Decent spot to be for a casual golfer playing 2-3 per month.

Im wanting to take the next step and start doing more research myself on equipment rather than depending on fittings or someone trying to sell me a $400 putter. What are some good ways to start learning about the equipment, so I can start making more smart purchases?

Appreciate any advice y’all may have!

This is a good start.  My suggestions

1. ask questions.  What do you want to know; lots of thoughts and opinions here.
2. try stuff.  The more you try the more you learn. See what works and doesn’t work

I spent a lot of time while healing from surgery watching Youtube golf videos trying to up my game and at 1st all the stats on the launch monitor were mind boggling and I was told to concentrate on the swing but the people who told me that were partially wrong. Those stats from fittings done by the pros online and the comments they made to the golfer taught me cause and effect, before on the course if my ball was balloning off the driver I had no idea why now I do and can make corrections and there are other examples. I also learned that the flex by swing speed isnt always right, same foes for the clubs lie angle or length isnt just by height. Theres a lot of info on youtube and an huge amount of info to read on the Mygolfspy website, skip a rerun on tv and hunker down on the computer or smart tv and dig in IMO

Yeah I guess right now I’m pretty focused on putters. MGS has helped with mallet vs blade. I start to have questions when it comes to Hosels, weights on the putter, toe hang and all those different options.

Just seems all so confusing unless you have someone knowledgeable to talk to

I am a putter junkie so ask away. I learned a lot about putter and putting from Bruce Rearick of Burnt Edges Consulting.  I have also reviews lots of stuff from David Orr and Phil Kenyon.     What questions do you have?  I'll see if I can provide some answers.

If you're after accessible and expert advice on equipment and fittings, the TXG Youtube channel would be my first stop. If you go back through their videos, there is pretty much a video on any equipment topic you could want.

Search the internet for whatever it is you are looking for. There are a number of resources out there that explain stuff, whether it’s a thread on a golf forum (mgs or elsewhere), an article on the homepage of a forum, blog article, video
