Looking to start using an app while golfing. Curious to see people answer the questions below. I currently have an iPhone and Apple watch, but don't use any golfing apps.

What kind of apps does everyone use?

What features do they have? do you like best?

How much does the app cost?

Is it compatible with smart watch? Which types?

I use 18 Birdies so I can get GPS yardages right on my Apple Watch and enter scores there as well. I don't need to touch my phone during a round. I use the free version, no complaints.

Don’t really use any phone/watch specific apps;  I personally find them too annoying and distracting to use during a round.  I use shotscope for shot tracking because it is just tag and move on; analysis and interaction is done later.   The only app I would consider is a GPS/hole view app on a course I have never/seldom play.

I have them all downloaded but have gravitated towards "Golfshot". I think i pay $20 a month for it but don't quote me. Lots of additions when you upgrade that I have enjoyed so far.

I enjoy having their GPS Capabilities on the tee box, then yardages on my apple watch. You also can track your swing metrics with it, but i haven't done a deep dive into that just yet.

I would say to each their own. I have used the free 18birdies app, Grint, and the TaylorMade+(still in R&D for me)

Good luck out there.

Like @cnosil, I use Shot Scope H4 for tagging and tracking my shots.  For an initial reasonable investment (on sale for $129) you get a GPS and shot tracking with free shot analysis post round.  I used to use a Gamin GPS watch, but find the belt holstered H4 more convenient and I found I like not wearing a watch while I play.  If the course you play had Yamaha golf carts, there's a free download (YamaTrack) that uses your phone to show the hole layout as well as front, middle and back distances.  It's not too bad.  If you currently have a GHIN account, there's a free basic GPS function within the app.  For roughly $40 a year you can upgrade to enhanced features like approach heat maps, putt break maps, shot tracking and linking with an Apple watch.

I used GolfPad, then GolfPad with tags, and now a Shotscope V3.  As others have said, apps can be distracting.  The V3 eliminated distractions and rarely ever misses a shot or putt for me.

I use the free version of the grint for gps and score keeping. Although, I like using a range finder for approach yardages, the gps is handy for figuring out carry’s off the tee and yardages on doglegs, etc.

I use GolfPad.  Free version.  I don't use a watch, so it's just on my phone...it does what I need, it gives me GPS yardages etc...it's the only app i've ever used and I'm too stubborn to change.

Since I have a Shot Scope which gives me distances to hazards and layups, F/M/B distances and shot tracking, and since I use a rangefinder to give me more precise distances to the hole, I no longer use a golf app on the course. I do have one that I use to preview a course I've never played before.  For those previews, I use Precision Pro which is free. The nice thing about this app for previews is that you can move things around, so you can change tee boxes, measure distances to and over hazards, etc.

How does Golfshot track your shots?  How does it know which club you are using?

It utilizes your phone or watch’s GPS. To start you have to manually adjust either during or after a round, the club choice, but over time it picks up on previous shots recorded and acts as a “caddie” and will eventually give club predictions and metrics that way. You can see on the picture of what it shows as you play the hole. Yes that was a “terrible tee shot I toed…” not really, but the best example where I had a good hole.

I did recently jump on the Arccos bandwagon and very much enjoying it.

I will probably keep both if I can to utilize all data both apps offer.

Hope this helps.
