I like more of a dead stop, much more dramatic. :)

I like to play to a more consistent shot, sometimes when I hit one that I think is just going to stop dead, it will back up a bit. Would rather play for the one small hop and stop.

How many different shots do you have inside of 50 yards?

I like to play a low flying, higher spinning shot that will take one bounce and stop, I will usually use my 54* but sometimes the pitching wedge to keep it even lower. When needed, I will play a higher shot with my lob wedge, but I don't really like that shot since it is harder to control the distance and spin.

What technique do you use to play those shots?

I play the ball about two inches back in my stance and will cut off the finish at or below my waist to hit the lower shot. For the higher shot I will open my stance about twenty degrees and open the face of the wedge until it is facing the target and swing along my foot line to a over head finish holding off the release a bit.

What determines the kind of shot you play around the green?

If I have to clear a bunker to a pin that is close to the trouble I will hit the higher shot, if I have any room to work with, I will hit the lower shot.

What clubs do you use inside of 50 yards, and what impacts your club selection?

Mostly the 54* or PW for low shots, the 60* for the higher shot.

What do you like to see the ball do when it hits the green (do you like to get it rolling ASAP, throw it all the way to the hole, etc)?

I prefer one bounce and stop, but when it is a little softer out, I play it a few feet past the hole and let it back up a couple of feet.

Thanks for the thorough response. 2 questions.

1) What ball do you play? It seems like your short game is very high spin, so I'm curious.

2) Are there any situations where you play a pitch & run shot, or do you play a shot that spins and sits 100% of the time?

Great post! One question - 54 and 60* is an interesting wedge configuration. Most people play 54* and 58*. Which club do you use from the bunker? Any issues?

I will use my 60* from the sand, don't have any issues with that set-up.

I ended up hitting my 60 out of the sand a lot in Myrtle because of the sand. For some reason, the amount of bounce on my 56 wasn't working for me.

Fluffy sand or packed and wet being better with the 60?

I'm surprised because I thought I read in another post that you ground your 60* to remove a lot of the bounce. You must open the face quite a bit then for bunker play.

The sand was not wet, but very dense. The 56 cut right under the ball and left the ball pretty much where it was. The 60 seemed to be perfect.

Sounds like everyone's headed out to play except me. Good luck with the short game.

That means you have a good opportunity to catch Sactown! If he plays a 4 hour round, you need about 250 posts per hour. And.....GO!

I have no desire to catch Sactown, nor the time. I'm out to watch Duke.

Having no desire to catch Sactown doesn't mean that I don't have a great desire to keep the rest of you clowns out of second. :P

Scared of clowns are you? I am going to find a video of a clown riding an Ostrich and take both you and Jamo out.

No, and I'm not sure I understand why so many people are. I mean, IT was freaky, but generally speaking I think clowns are alright.

Should have just stayed here and posted...

As far as the short game, today's round convinced me to buy the lob wedge that goes with my set. I just need the shorter distance full swing and the extra shots around the green.

Cool. I love your willigness to hit your club on the belt sander. Have you done any grinding before or did you just have faith?

Hi Matt

Yes, i have ground some stuff before. Nothing too extensive. To me, its all about feel when you are grinding, and checking often. I need to post some pics of it actually.

I just have my PW and a SW, and I hit all my short games shots with my PW, pretty much just try to get it on the green and let it roll out. I don't have much of a chance to get the ball to stop near the pin if I'm on the wrong side of the green. I would really like to take a short game lesson this season.

I am going the vintage player route of having lots of shots in the bag by having lots of clubs in the bag.

I look at it simply as by having the 60*, I have one more "known" short shot. I have one fewer situation where I sit there on the course wondering what to hit and how to hit it.

Maybe I need Nic's 8 wedge bag.

This has helped me a bunch. Earlier we were talking about the pelz method. What i do is take a rangefinder to the range with me and hit 730, 900 1100 and full swings with each wedge including the PW. Fire up excel and write down these numbers then laminate the paper.

You will not believe how much more accurate you will become. The hardest part is the 730 swing, and actually trusting those distances. As far as the clock swing goes, i wouldnt get too hung up on if you are exactly at 0900, what feels like 0900 is good enough as long as its repeatable.

The short game is my favorite part of the game because I can't hit the ball too far yet. I like to play all my shots low to the ground. I putt off the fringe a lot. It's not impressive looking, but it gets the job done at the courses I play at.

Thanks man, I am going to do this for sure. With the GPS there is no reason not to know what wedge to hit from where. I just need the rangefinder for the driving range. maybe I can bug one of the guys in the shop to come out and laser some targets for me...

I agree with this 100%. There's no reason to be walking around with 13 clubs if a 14th will fill a gap or give you a good solid number to reach for.
