What's in your range practice pack?

Recommended Posts

I don't know why but I'm always surprised at how many people who do not use anything to help with alignment and aim at the range. It can be anything - another club, a stick, a string - whatever. Best training aid on the planet are alignment sticks. Second best is athlete's foot powder spray (or face tape) so you can see where on the face you're striking the ball. Fix alignment and face strike and you are well on your way ...

So, spies, I ask you - what is in your bag that you bring to the range for practice?

(note - I use the headcover either inside or outside of the ball to correct toe/heel strikes and fix path)

Alignment sticks, a plastic clothes hanger, driver head cover, and a Rapsodo MLM.

For putting, I keep a tape measure in the bag

i need to add a can of foot spray and probably remove the clothes hanger, as I can’t remember what drill I put it in for years ago 😬

I do most of my practice at home. I'll explain a bit....... The driving range at my course is in a low area and very soft turf. Any balls you hit will plug. It's so soft they have to hand pick most of the range. The balls do not get a regular bath so you either scratch up your club face or you wipe each ball before you hit it. I also don't know when the last time the balls were replaced (if you know what I mean). The only benefit is to see the ball flight.

I use my Optishot2 system for club path data and I use a MEVO for ball data and distance. What I found very useful is a white long and wide zip tie. I can lay this right alongside the ball or an inch away and focus on swinging down the length of the zip tie and not worry about hitting an alignment stick.

The garage came with the carpet. I was going to replace it until I realized that the circles were the same size as a regulation golf cup. I can practice longer length putts than the putting mat will allow.

I seldom go to an outdoor driving range.  I’ll practice using the MGS GC Quad.  I use the edge of the mat and a ball in front of the mat to aid in alignment and startline….essentially alignment sticks.

I primarily practice putting and short game.   For putting block practice I use tees or a dime.  Tees are setup as a gate for the ball and putter, as a target when not putting to a hole, and to mark an aimpoint.   Short game I don’t have any aids.   I typically just move around to different lies.

Also a fan of alignment sticks at the range - I use old windsurf sail battens 'cuz they're flat. Also like to put a short one perpendicular to the ball to help me check my weight shift / follow through.

All that said.. most of the time I prefer to leave the sticks in the bag and line up behind my ball to my target .. like I would on the course .. and pick an aiming spot in front of the ball.

Have not yet used foot spray or impact tape .. the range balls seem to always leave little indicator marks for me!

The Wrist Hanger is basically the same as this:

It's just for wrist angle on the back swing. I've had mixed results with it.

I gave up hitting balls on a range many years ago.  Hitting one ball after the other destroys my game, so I don't do it anymore.  I learnt that the best way forward for me is to practise like I play ... on the golf course using only ONE ball.

Using that practice method my handicap dropped from 11 to 5 in just six months.  Works for me.
