I’ve decided to go graphite in my irons, I have a shaft I love that’s in my driver and fairways. I’m gonna buy them and install in my irons, it’s obviously .335 to .355. I have the shimming down just wanting advice on tipping. It’s an 80 gram version. I can get in x, s, and r if needed. I have an 80x on hand. My thought was to put 80x in pw and jump to a flex in the 8 & 9 then going to R 4,5,6, and 7. There isn’t enough on the bay to go all the same flex and I figured it might help with flight anyways. They are fairly close in weight and I know how to adjust swingweight. Any advice on tipping in this setup? I know this seems wild but I love this shaft so much and I’ve never felt one I like compared to it. Plus I don’t take golf too seriously. Cheers

The shaft has a 3” tip section so I can only tip 2”. I was thinking of tipping

x/pw 2”

S/9 1.5”

S/8 1”

R/7 1.5”

R/6 1”

R/5 .5”

R/4 0”

how does this sound to any club builders?

if the shafts are .355 tipping is not suggested or recommended as they come in discrete lengths.

If the tip is only 3" then trimming is also not recommended as the insertion depth is also included in the 3"

If I’m reading this right you are going to use the same shaft that’s in your driver in your irons?

Yep, reading correctly.  Wants to use wood shafts in the irons.   I just want to hear how they work after he does this; should be an interesting result and I don’t think in a good way

Agree. The amount of trimming in length alone is crazy to think about

Trim code says it can be tipped up to 1” if I’m understanding it correctly. Another thing I read was you need to leave 1.5” of tip length, so that would put it at a max of 1.5” of tipping. So I would not go over 1.5” of tipping after reading that. They did make this in a .370 hybrid shaft, I’m just having a harder time tracking those down. I know that would be a better solution.

Could be the future! It's also not my money if it doesn't work! Have fun and be creative! Doesn't matter how you hit it into the woods just know that's where it will go no matter the club!

My thought is that

1.  Wood shafts are designed for heads that are lighter than iron heads so the feel you like won’t be the same.

2. trimming the shafts to length is going to significantly alter the profile and destroy the feel you love.   If you don’t tip trim, you are taking 9+ inches off the butt end.

3. the butt trimming will take you to such a narrow part of the shaft that the grips might not fit correctly and you are going to have to do a lot of buildup.

You can probably make it work,  but I just don’t think they will perform like you are expecting.   IMO, you would bet better off looking for iron shafts that have a profile similar to your wood shafts.

I appreciate the input, I have thought of that. I don’t think the head weight is a valid argument as the progressive head weight and shaft length should make them play similar. I’ve played very light graphite iron shafts before, like 65g light weight. I have one of these in 80 gram extra stiff on my 9 wood and it is a lot stiffer than the 60 I have in my driver. I definitely could see the length of trimming from the butt effecting the feel though. Something to think about. Cheers

You should just try it on the highest lofted one first Im assuming its the PW. Then youll get an idea if the rest will follow.

Another thing is to check that driver shaft if its a tapered butt or not. If its a tapered one trimming it like ~9"in will get pretty dicey.

Are you going to tip trim the end? if so you should just do it the same for all of them. Unfortunately you only have so far to trim the tip cause after about 2" that portion of the shaft wall get really thin and would not support the force.

Good Luck. I am actually interested to see how it goes.

Interesting. Some perspective. Driver head weights are +/- 200 g.

I put a 5 wood head on a driver shaft, 250ish grams, and the shaft was too whippy to hit effectively.

Wedges run around 260-275ish grams. Others less but I don't believe any head gets to the lightness of the driver head.

Good luck with the effort

The worse things you will have to deal with are the heavy glue line with the shims and the hard taper on the butt end from trimming. Not knowing which shaft it is you're using, measure the parallel butt section to see what type of situation you're getting into.

There are a ton of good graphite iron shafts that would be a better choice and I would suggest HEAVILY that you consider one of them. Cause like cnosil said, these will feel NOTHING like the ones in your woods. Not even close!
