Hi all, got fitted for some irons and they put me in a D9 swing weight. From what I've heard, seems like a pretty heavy swing weight. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

What - are you sure of that?

Driver: Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  R flex   - 44.25 

Fairways:  Ping G410 5, 7, 9 wood  Alta CB red 65 R flex

Hybrid:  Ping G410  26 degree  Alta CB Red 70 R flex 

Irons: Ping G430  7-PW, 45, 50 Alta CB black 65 soft R flex 

Wedges:  Ping 195 S54, E58

Wedges and irons are - 1/2” and one degree flat 

Putter: Sacks Parente Duke 32.5”

Ball: Titleist Pro VI or Callaway Chrome Soft X ls

 

While not at the same time I was fit for every club in my bag as well as the Pro VI ball. I use the chrome soft x ls on my league course.  It has much softer softer greens than the club that I belong to. 

I’m on a mission to shoot my age - lifetime lowest round is 66 and I’m currently 67.

Seems like a heavy swing weight but there are numerous factors that contribute to that number.  Things like lighter grips, longer shafts, lighter shafts, and flatter lies can all increase swingweight.   
 

i would assume that you hit the club as specified.  How did it feel and were the results acceptable?

Yes, I am sure they said D9 and even gave me a paper showing it.

That what I thought. They increased the length by .5" and I play midsize grips. They felt good, but a little on the heavier side. Could be a workout getting through a large bucket at the range.

midsize grips can be heavier which would reduce swing weight not increase.  Half inch increase is 3 SW points.   If you think it would be a workout hitting a bucket of balls, it probably is not the right setup and like you suspect to heavy if a club.

Is there an advantage for a heavier club? Increased ball speed/more distance.. etc?

It is all about how you react to the weight of the club.  It could be used to slow down your tempo which could result in better ball contact.   You should ask your fitter these questions since he/she saw you swing and decided what to fit you into.

Csnoil certainly know his stuff. D9 is outside the norm, even the heavy norm. What club or clubs would this be?

 

Have you been fit before? If so what were you fit for? Anything is possible of course but it seems odd. I’d want to know why.

This seems very odd.  I would definitely re check with the fitter to see if this is in fact correct,
