I use Shotscope for various data points: club distances, strokes gained, short game performance and it also gives me average hole performance for a specific course. It's a one time purchase (watch and tags) so no subscription fee.

“Best” is a subjective opinion that will result lots of opinions.  For overall game tracking, I think the best is shotscope.  Easy to use, no subscription fee, and minimal interaction required on the course.     If you just want to track total like FW, GIR, and putts over time I’d tell you to use a spreadsheet program like Excel.

i’d suggest describing what you are hoping to track, how much interaction with the app do you want on course, price range,  willingness to do post round editing, what you want to gain from the app, etc.   if you can provide that people can give you better input on which apps might best fit your needs/desires.

I wear my 45mm Apple Watch every time I golf and I love it. I use the Golfshot app and it works great. I do avoid my heavy metal watch band it tends to make my hands a bit late but otherwise the face of my watch is the same position as the face of the club so it’s definitely a useful feeling!

I'm not a fan of having to mess with my phone during a round, it distracts my focus.  So when I'm tracking stats, I use a strokes gained style tracking on my card, then enter the round into the GolfMetrics app on my phone when I'm finished playing.

It has been a while since I've done this... probably should start doing it again to understand where I need to focus my practice :).

Arccos while expensive.  Works pretty well for me.  I got it when I got my new iron set a few years ago now just so I could figure out the damn ranges it goes since I don’t have a launch monitor.

Shot Scope user here. I've been using the X5 since it was released earlier this year and before that the V3. Before the V3 I had a Garmin which was GPS only. For some reason I have always worn a watch when I played golf so wearing one for GPS and tracking purposes was natural. When I was thinking about a tracking device having to wear something on my belt or carrying my phone during a round were real negatives.

Sorry to sort of hijack the thread, but I’m also looking for a stat tracking app.

I have a Garmin Approach S60 watch and am 100% satisfied with it in terms of score keeping, distance/hazard/GPS measurements, club tracking, etc, but the performance/stats analysis tool in Garmin Golf simply doesn’t cut it and is very deficient.

Is there an app that could use Garmin’s shot tracking data (club, distance, lie, etc) and analyze it in order to obtain representative strokes gained data and identify weak or strong areas of my game for example?

Basically, keep using my Garmin watch as it is, but link it to another app that includes in-depth data analysis.

Personally use shot scope V3 and 18Birdies. I've given up on shot scope, and 18birdies is great. The free version gives you everything you want and the paid version has everything else you could think you'd need. 18Birdies pairs with an apple watch too making it a basic shot scope V3

I will say I do have the H4 with the PROlx+ (I think its called) range finder.  I use the absolute crap out of the H4 for a rough front middle back green reading.  Sometimes ill shoot the pin with the actual finder, but 80% of the time its just the little H4 doing most of the heavy lifting.  Also combined with my arccos stuff too.

I agree, I used the phone for a season with the Arccos app. Had to keep your phone in your pocket while shooting, which wasn’t an issue. I started to use the watch with Golf Shot to record swing data. It’s actually turning out to be quite useful.

Also... your luck with the arccos link may vary.  Mine worked for a bit then just stopped picking up shots, its replacement also failed to do so.  Went back to phone in pocket and it will at most miss a tap in putt or occasionally pick up me setting a club down, but thats easy to notice.

Question for Apple Watch users -  if you use an app like 18birdies or the Grint from your phone, does it get the GPS info from your phone?  Meaning you’d have to keep your phone in your pocket and not in your bag/cart?

I use my Apple Watch with golf shot. Your phone just needs to be within Bluetooth range, you have 40-50feet of leeway.  My phone stays on my cart and my yardages are displayed on the watch. Golf shot also tracks swing parameters through the Apple Watch.

hope this help!

cheers,

Travis

But my question is, is the yardage displayed on the watch the distance from the green to your watch, or the green to your phone?  My daughter was trying this out yesterday and was skeptical of some of the numbers she was getting.

Oh I see! I think that depends on which watch you have. Some have internal GPS and some don’t. My old Apple Watch did not have gps and the info came from the phone but with my new series 7 the GPS data is taken from the watch.

@Shlax and @Dooby I use the Garmin S60 and added the CT10 sensors this season. I don’t think adding the sensors adds any more data or analysis to the Garmin Golf app.

If anything I’m seeing that the data isn’t very helpful for figuring out distances for clubs since it doesn’t seem to do a good job with shots under yards. So a 30 yard chip with a 7I pulls down your 7I full swing distance. I also have issues with the putter since it can’t always figure out when I’m done putting. So I have a 200 yard putt in my stats. I’ve asked Garmin and I can’t go back to delete shots from the data set without screwing up my scorecards. Curious how other systems deal with stuff like this.

Shotscope uses outlier detection, the ability to mark shots as positional, and separating out shots within 50 yards of the green as short game and not full swing.   No system is perfect since they don’t always understand your intent;  you have to figure out the nuances.   The additional difficult with distances is that it measures total distance and not carry distances so things like elevation changes and rollout will influence the values.

I use a Garmin Venu watch and the Garmin Golf app…it’s very useful when you’re on the course (when the watch works). I hate fiddling with my phone during a round so I do love having a watch. However, the app itself is terrible. If you want anything more than even the most simplistic, barebones stat-tracking after a round you should look basically anywhere else. It gives you next to no data and lacks even the basic ability to look at results from individual shots or clubs. Really disappointing and seems completely unsupported by Garmin at this point.

Since you are an 8 handicap, you likely need something a little more robust than the standard basic stats.   As others mentioned, I'm a fan of the Shot Scope H4.  I've been using it for just about a year (was an MGS Shot Scope Pro LX+ tester which included the H4) and I found it was easy to use, gave me the club distances I was looking for and the statistics yielded important insights into my game.  I do have to edit rounds at time.  Often, I just forget to tag my clubs and manually tagging your putts can sometimes not be in the right place.   At $129 with no subscription fee, it's a bargain.
