Bug spray stains on leather shoes

So I noticed this unfortunate situation tonight while cleaning up my golf shoes.

I used this bug spray a few times on my legs, ankles, arms, etc.

I was cleaning and noticed the overspray stains will not come out.

I can’t say that I’ve ever experienced anything like this with golf shoes and bug spray before.

So I go and read the label and lo and behold…  Really pissed, especially since I didn’t spray directly on the shoes.  Just some overspray by mistake.  So hopefully others don’t make the same mistake I did.

If you haven't tried yet, use a little mink or neatsfoot oil after you clean the leather.  It may absorb in and darken the leather a little bit, making the overspray less noticeable.

Unfortunately, there may not be much you can do on the rubber/TPU sections.  The spray can actually damage the finish on the plastics, maybe buffing with a magic eraser or very very fine steel wool can remove a light layer damaged by the overspray.

Thanks. I’ll try that.  I went over it all with a magic marker when I first noticed and it didn’t do anything.

Make a baking soda paste by mixing 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water. Gently rub the paste onto the stain using a soft brush or sponge. Let it sit for a few minutes before wiping away with a clean damp cloth.

I’ll give it a try, thanks!
