Exercises for increasing swing speed

Recommended Posts

So I have seen some arguments from both sides on this one; Some say that to increase swing speed you need to swing with something that is progressively heavier in order to build strength. On the other side, I have read that I should be swinging something very light to teach my body muscle memory on swinging very fast.

Any thoughts on this?

I think you need both.  The popular swing speed products utilize both light and heavy weights.  Moving away from speed specific products, I would say you need to work on balance and core strength.  Years ago, someone did a study that showed that the number of pull ups a person could do was positively correlated to swing speed.  None of the other exercises they looked at were.  I have no idea if the study was well designed, but it might be worth it to add pull downs or chin ups to your work out routine.

Exercises to increase speed are comping movements and getting stronger, also optometric and rotational exercises.

Overspeed training also which can be done with a heavy and light device. But for most people just having a more fundamentally sound swing and using the ground properly will add speed instantly to one’s swing.

We can use Kyle Berkshire as an example. He was already fast. He implemented powerlfiting into his training regiment and gained speed

Over speed training is the generally recommended method.   There are multiple threads on the forum related to the various products and all seem to result in faster swing speeds for the people using them.

In my experience, the lighter-faster path is the way to increase speed the quickest.  Kind of like if you want to jump higher, plyometric exercises are going to do a lot more for you right off the bat than squats or calf raises or even Olympic lifts.  That said, there's room for both and the answer is both (Olympic lifters do tend to have bananas vertical leaps).  I would not recommend swinging anything much heavier than a normal club, though.  Like, if we're talking about exercising with one of those weighted donuts, I don't think that's the safest or most effective use of time.  I'd go the path of plyometric work (swinging something lighter faster) and traditional resistance work (lifting weights, anti-rotation core exercises).  Tossing around a medicine ball isn't a bad idea either.
