I guess technically I was gaming an insert putter with my Scotty Studio Style Newport. Does it count if the insert is GSS? I need a ruling.

Now with the Rife Abaco, no insert, just glorious milled grooves baby!!

I think it's still an insert, even if it's a milled insert.

PING iWi and iN inserts have excellent feel to them. On the iWi I had to look at the face to see if one was there. From a no-insert putter guy, that is a compliment.

Dammit! I was afraid you were going to say that... Guess I can't say that I don't like inserts ever again. Gamed that putter for four years.

That Scotty was my first quality putter, gamed it for a little over a year IIRC. Now my dad has it, though for the trip he brought out the oldest 8802-style I've ever seen and putted great.

I prefer the feel off of putters without an insert, in fact the only one with an insert that I have had much success with has been the first Rossa Maranello TP putter with the solid Titallium insert.

Its good to know I'm years behind you in the putter category Matt.

8802 eh? That's pretty hard core. He probably gamed that last when you were knee high to a grasshopper.

Yeah, that putter was beat up long before I came into this world, now it's truly a disaster. The best part is that his idea of refinishing it is to spray it with more black spray paint. Yes, "more," as in, he's already done it once.

Dads are great for this. Mine is bagging a Wilson Tour Special 1 (8802 style) along with clubs from the past 5 decades. Got him to buy a new driver (09 Burner) and he lost his mind. Helped pace of play too, b'c now he can hit past the reds...

I think my dad paid for....maybe 4 of the clubs in his bag, the rest are from his brother, his friend, this guy, that guy. The only one's he's really bought are the G5 driver and a couple of Vokeys.

I've purchased some new stuff for my Dad and it almost always ends up in some back corner of his garage. The man is set in his ways.

It would be cool if you could steal it and restore it to its original luster (or better) and then gift it back to him as a birthday or Christmas present.

I was thinking about that, actually. I was thinking father's day, but then he'd know it was missing. I'll have to put it on the backburner until Christmas.

Where is always the "some guy broken into my garage" trick...but probably better you wait. Especially if your Dad keeps fire arms in the house. :)

Yeah, they broke in, left the car and the motorcycle, left the other golf clubs, and stole the 20+ year old putter. I don't think that would hold up under cross examination.

Overhaulin' for putters, fantastic!

That would make a great contest. If Matt's dad is like mine though, you would get it refinished and he would say that it too nice to use. Or, spray paint it black again to get it back to how it was.

I've never in my life heard him say anything was "too nice to use." He just doesn't buy much golf equipment for some reason. Talks about it all the time, always the same stuff, "I want some forged irons" or "I'm getting graphite shafts for the irons" but never pulls the trigger.

If I do refinish it, I think I'll let Lamont hit it with black polymer for durability and to maintain the look that he's grown comfortable with.

Make him sign a "no spray paint" waiver if you send it to LaMont.

We can't have your pop painting on the Mona Lisa...

I'm sure he wouldn't, and I don't think there'd be any need with the durability of that polymer, so I've heard.

Now I'm thinking about the paintfill. Some bold colors would really pop on the black. And before you say it, NO YELLOW.
