2024 Season Goals - What Say You?

Recommended Posts

My goal this year is to play more competition golf. Recently joined the National Federation of the country I live in to be able to play competition golf, so step 1 complete.

This is more for me to try something new as a golfer that I haven't done since being a JR golfer. All of the competitions will be with handicap so hopefully I can be in the mindset of playing myself and the course and not worry about the golfer beside me.

With coaching the HS team, I am able to get on the course to hit balls multiple times a week but don't have time to grind out a full practice session too often. So the game is holding currently not really improving.

After a long period (15-20 years) of playing very little golf because of work, family and health priorities, I started playing more regularly again in 2023 and upgraded my older golf gear.  In 2023 I was happy to get out for about 30 rounds and worked on understanding my now "senior" swing mechanics and getting used the new clubs and gear.

For 2024 I want to continue enjoying to play a game I loved in my younger years and get in at least 50 rounds.  Golf goals would include trying to lower my handicap by 3-4 strokes, as it is now about 15-16.  Focus will be on hitting more fairways and working on my putting and chipping, as that seems to be where I give up more strokes than necessary.

Goal is too shoot under 85 and to clean up my driver. Been really struggling with that for way too long. Have a lesson booked cause trying to figure it out on my own just is not working.

Been playing for about 2 years in total. Winter breaks and a 6month period when I got sick. Starting to feel like myself again and recently played a “okay” round.
I currently have custom fit Cobra LTDx irons/wedges, a Vokey 60(cause my short game has been the best part of my game, and a Maverick 9 deg. Driver. Driving is the worst part of my game so My 4 iron usually takes alot of the long game abuse.

Love this topic!

I have several goals for 2024:

  1. Get my handicap below 8
  2. Shoot below 74
  3. Gain repeatable control over my approach shots.
    • I'll measure this by looking at my insights on theGrint. My approach accuracy handicap is currently an 18. I would like to get that down to single digits.
  4. Play a bucket list course
  5. Play in some sort of tournament/scramble with some sort of stakes involved.

I work on my game daily and can't seem to shift my handicap much right now. In the last several months my swing has changed drastically from being mostly arms to being mostly body, which has allowed me to gain 10-15 yards per club. Now I need to gain my control back.

9.5 handicap | WITB: Callaway Rogue's, Tietlist Vokey SM8's, Cobra Radspeed Driver, & Scotty Cameron Newport 2.5

🙂 Thanks for starting this thread!

2023 Goals (I thought I put them down some where but can't find them, so going off of memory)

Break 90: Push as I shot 90 on combining 2 nines in a week

Had several rounds where combined nines were in low 90s and week I hit 90 on the head.

Handicap below 20: Win, barely!

19.4 as of now. Down from a high of 22 earlier in the year. Technically reporting ends Nov 31 here in OR but I am likely not able to play many more rounds

P Avg Driver distance of >275 yards: Win, barely!

276 for the year. Speed training and swing work really paid off.  If you look how my last 15 nines finished the year, I am 283 so I killed it then.

2024 Goals:

Break 80 on 2 combined nines and break 90 in a tournament

In my one tournament this year, I was on track to break 100 if not for my driver shaft COG breaking on me. I know I can do it. As for breaking 80 on two combined nines, it is a lofty goal but I feel if I learn my game better, I should be able to manage the course enough to make it happen.

Get my handicap below 15

Continuous work on my swing and course management and meditation. Really hope the game just starts to flow with me. Along with this, I want to get my GIR up 20 40%. 2023 was 21%.

Have a 3-putt % <10%

I finished 2023 on average of 20% which is terrible. A lot of it was distance control issues that I really grinded on the last half of the year. The other is technique which I am working on now and the offseason in hopes I stop pulling putts left.

Bonus: Take my daughter out for a couple rounds

Just to spend daddy/daughter time. We love being outdoors together and I hope as she gets older she doesn't mind walking more.

Bonus 2: Keep having fun everytime I golf.

My wellness and meditation Journey have really helped me calm my emotions and manage my expectations on the course. If I have a bad round, I remember to just enjoy nature, the sun rise, just being out of the house. Makes the game more enjoyable and not a chore (which it shouldn't be, its our hobby!)

Update so far. Tournament didn’t go so hot but I have broken 90 on 18 so that’s a plus. Cap is at 18.9 so creeping lower. Three putt % is at 17%. 3% lower than last year. Have a ways got go. So far think I am on track for two of these.

Follow my journey to enjoying golf and going low

2024 is off to a slow start for me since it’s been frigid and snowy all year, I’ve yet to play a round or go to the range (it’s been closed) yet but I’m sticking with my goals!

  1. spend 2 hours weekly on the putting green with targeted practice.
  2.  Play 10 new courses (I played 5 in 2023)
  3. Play 150 rounds
  4. take 2 golf trips (one planned so far @ Big Cedar to play Payne’s Valley)
  5. win my flight at my Clubs member-guest

hats off to everyone setting their goals, it was awesome to read through them on the spreadsheet. Best of luck!!

End of May update on my goals:

1. I’ve managed to spend 2 hours MOST weeks on the practice green and it definitely has helped a ton!

2. I’ve only played 3 new courses so far tho a year… a bit behind pace.
3. I’m on pace for 150+ rounds and I’m at 75 as of today.
4. I’ve taken 1 trip so far and it was to play Payne’s Valley in MO. I’m hoping to take a trip to play PGA Frisco later this fall.
5. Our member-guest is next week and I’m feeling good about our chances!

Hi GolfSpy_KFT,

Thanks for starting this discussion! I’m really excited to set my goals for the 2024 season. Here are a few goals I’m aiming for:

Lower My Handicap:

My main goal is to lower my handicap by 3-5 strokes. I’ll be focusing on improving my consistency and accuracy, especially with my iron shots.

Improve Short Game:

I want to spend more time practicing my chipping and putting. My aim is to reduce the number of putts per round and improve my up-and-down percentage.

Increase Driving Distance:

I plan to work on my fitness and swing mechanics to add an extra 10-15 yards to my drives.

Participate in More Tournaments:

I want to play in at least five local tournaments this year to gain more competitive experience and test my skills under pressure.

Mental Game:

Focusing on staying positive and maintaining a strong mental game throughout the season. I’ll be working on my pre-shot routine and visualization techniques.

Practice Routine:

Establish a consistent practice routine that includes time on the range, short game area, and course. I’m aiming for at least three practice sessions per week.

I’ve added these goals to the Google Doc, but I’m also posting them here for visibility and to hold myself accountable. Looking forward to seeing what everyone else is aiming for this season and supporting each other in achieving our goals!

Best,

So first goal has finally been achieved . I broke the 90 barrier for the first time and pared 16 - 18 to shoot 87 . I know doesn't sound like much but to me  it's huge . Next goal is sub 84 and so on until I can get my game consistantly under the 80 mark and be a single digit handicap.

My season so far . . .

Was planning to play 2 tournaments, have dropped 1 and added 3 more.

Finished 2nd in the CGTF held in May. Didn't play particularly well, but only 1 player in the field of 30 played better, so happy with this result.

Finished 4th in a two-day men's club event. Played poorly, managed to finish strong to catch a top 5.

The next 2 tourneys are the Senior Men's Club Championship July 13/14 and the Men's Club Championship August 10/11.

I dropped the Vancouver Open from my schedule. It is a 54 hole event but the first day would be a challenge. The first round is held at the course I work at. I would be at work by 4:00am (up around 3), off the course by 8, then tee it up in the afternoon wave. It would turn out to be just too long a day for me. My job on tourney day is cutting and painting the holes. According to the rules, even though the VGT picks hole locations, I would be disqualified from playing because of the job I do on the course. So, all things considered, this one is now out of my schedule.

I'm starting to play better so would be nice to round into form for these two club events.

About shooting my age this year - 66. Managed a tidy 69 last Sunday, with some room for improvement. I'm confident this will happen. Looking forward to a great summer of golf and good results.

Cheers and FORE!

Mike

1. handicap of 4 or less.

2. Score in the 60s.  70 is personal best. Probably short game, green reading and reducing doubles related.

3. play more golf.  Need to balance most wanted testing and some after work 9s.  This will probably help achieve 1 and 2.

We are about halfway through the year so I wanted to look back at the goals I posted and see how I was doing

It has been a tough year physically and I feel like I am starting to get back to 100%.  Been working on short game and feel like my game is getting back into shape.  I don't track my handicap via GHIN and just use a app on my iPad but it has dropped about .5 strokes.   May not make 4 but it is definitely trending in the right direction.   Still need to avoid the big numbers.  Can't say I have played more golf; trending around  my normal amount.

2024 Goals:

1. Enjoy, enjoy no matter what.

2. Try to maintain my current handicap. I realize as I age I am loosing some yardage. I might need to move forward and that's OK.

3. Maintain my Fairways hit at 60%.

4. Increase my GIR to 50%+. This past season I was able to increase it to 44%.

5. Reduce 3-putts to no more than one per round.  Currently it is 1.5 I started late tracking. But it is one I want to work on.

Thought I'd follow @cnosil's lead and look at my progress so far this season. Currently fairways hit is 63%, > Greens hit stands at 49% so I'm getting there. 3 putts per round has dropped a little to 1.29 per round. That is a big one I need to keep working at for sure. One thing I do before every round is to spend at least 15 min on the practice green working on speed and distance control.

Well I finally beat 85. Driver still needs a lot of work along with the 3 wood but we’re making slow progress. Ball position really helped that start to get cleaned up. Hoping to clean up some of those BAD holes and shots that kill my score. Maybe if I clean up those really stroke setters then I could get closer to the 70s. Also playing more 18 holes to see if my consistency throughout 18 holes stays good or falls apart towards the end.

Congrats! Awesome acheivement there! Consistency is definitely the key to lowering scores, it's not about really about playing better golf, it's just about not playing bad golf

It’s an addictive feeling. I havent touched it yet this year but I have also tinkered more, been hurt and had a swing revamp so not much speed training yet. Awesome drive.

I had been nipping at hitting it since the beginning of the year.  Ground was just so soft for months that we never got much roll.

It was overall a great driving day for me.  Followed up by the next round of barely being able to get out of the box.  🤦‍♂️ golf amiright?

Totally get it. The funny thing, my best driving distance was when my swing was the least functional, if that makes sense. Golf is such a funny game and all its round to round, hell even hole to hole changes.

One of my goals was to play The Crossings in Carlsbad, Calif.,  literally the home course for Callaway, TM, Titleist, Cobra, KBS, and Evnroll, which are all headquartered in Carlsbad all within a few miles.  It is rated 69 and 125 from the whites but I think most locals say it is harder.  Lots of carries over gullies and rocks.  I hoped to be up to the challenge by year end, but a group I know had an opening last Sunday morning, so I dove in.  I scored, eh, around 115, nothing to write home about, but I had 2 pars, 3 bogeys, and 4 putts that died an inch short of going in center cup.  Pretty much my best round ever.  If I could post an x-ray of my spine  . . ..  I should post an upper body photo showing my "Stacy Lewis before surgery" degrees of curve.  Not quite Quasimodo, but close.🙃🎃.  But like the rest of you, love the challenge playing this game.  I couldn't play baseball or basketball or hockey, but I can golf.  Sort of.  I was so stoked after this round that I signed up for a lesson.  Dan O'Connell at Carlsbad GolfMart did a good job showing me proper right shoulder position, better swing.  Thanks, Dan.

I played there about 15 years ago. It's a nice course. I remember liking the green design (tiers and pin locations).

Still searching for my first birdie, didn't think it would take this long and I have been close numerous times. I feel like once I see one happen all the birds might fly out the cage 🪽

After getting home, I realized that I could enjoy playing The Crossings once a month but not weekly.  Score of 115 is chopped liver to a lot you guys, but gives me a good target to hit 105.  I'm only a 69 yr old hunchback.
