You may be in possession of the only bottle in existence. It hasn't been available for about 4 years. I was only able to get a single case of the Bourbon Mash before it was pulled from the market. Crown got in a little bit of trouble for calling a Canadian whisky by the name of Bourbon. Cherish that one!

That one was even before they put that “NOT A BOURBON” red labels on them haha.

I actually had just read an article on them since I remembered it wasn’t available long.  It’s certainly not the best, but I enjoyed this bottle!

Well bourbon by US law can only be produced in well the US. I can see the bourbon mash ruffling some feathers there, especially those in Kentucky. From what I’ve read they also think only they produce bourbon, even though a ton of bourbon gets produced in Indiana by MGP.

shades of gray. it was recognized by congress as a “distinctly american product” but they never passed a law about it.

it’s due to trade agreements that the US gets to keep the name bourbon (which is ironically french) while other countries make whisky or whiskey

correct, though, that 95+% of bourbon is made in kentucky. supposedly the high limestone concentration is integral to their distillation process.

I have a hard time believing the 95% MGP is what was in Bulleit bourbon for years and is still their rye and MGP is made outside of Kentucky. I honestly have never researched where most bourbon is made. I also find it funny how JD is a bourbon by definition of the mash but because of the charcoal filter process it makes it their own kind.

Four Roses was the distiller for Bulleit in the beginning.

Tennessee Whiskey is Bourbon by definition: at least 51% corn, stored in new, White Oak, charred barrels for no less than 2 years. The charcoal filtering ads no color or flavoring. Any Bourbon producer can do the same if they choose.

Just like all bourbon is whiskey, not all whiskey is bourbon; all Tennessee Whiskey is whiskey, not all whiskey is Tennessee Whiskey. It has to go through the Lincoln County Process (maple charcoal filtering) to be called Tennessee Whiskey.

All of the above comments are spot on. I would also suggest that if you find something you like or are wanting to try, don't wait to grab it. Items that I used to be able to get on a regular basis( too many to mention by name) have become allocated and I get allocations periodically, if at all, especially when it relates to bourbon or rye. Needless to say, a large chunk of time is spent trying to keep my shelves from being empty. Happy hunting!

Just please @Chip Strokes, don't try to fix your slice, while repairing your drywall ceiling and having some of your favorite bourbon all at once.  We don't want any more "Oops" posts in the Home Improvement thread! 😂

A couple of wines from my daughter’s birth year to celebrate her 21st birthday.

Wantirna Estate Amelia Cabernet Merlot 2000

This was part of my pay for picking/cellar hand work during the 2003 vintage. Beautiful old wine that was still lively. It was an added bonus that Amelia is my daughter’s middle name.

Stanton and Killeen Vintage Port 2000

I second this. Fantastic

When my wife asked if I wanted to leave Maine and move to where she grew up, I couldn't say no to Pinehurst, NC. I honestly don't spend much money on golf equipment, but I'm constantly reading reviews in case I ever get ready to buy

I swing left handed and have been the State of Maine Left Hander's champion since 1997, the last year they held the tournament. I'm currently a 7.1 handicap. Trying to get lower, but my gut gets in the way.

It all depends on what you like. Scotch is the most diversified spirit that I know of. I'm a big fan of all things Islay. I love the the smoke and peat. Lagavulin.. Laphroaig.. Ardbeg.. Caolila.. Talisker.. (not Isay) same profile.

Do you like sweet, smoke, grain?

So much to be had with Scotch.

Thanks for the thoughts! At this point I would say I like the sweet/grain tastes more! I feel like they might be more "entry-level" flavors since Scotch is commonly held as a harsher spirit (though I understand it is versatile). I'd appreciate any recos in that profile!

I tell customers all the time that if they want to dive into single malts, start with the Highlands. They are less peat driven and the flavor profile is more fruit, honey, and bready. Some solid options to start with are Glenlivet 12, Glenfiddich 12( tastes like fresh pears), and if you feel like you want to treat yourself, Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14. It's aged in rum barrels and is on the sweeter side. As referenced by Silver and Black, the island single malts typically have a smoky, peaty characteristic to them. An exception to this would be unpeated Bruichladdich Scottish Barley. You will, however, get some briny notes from being on the ocean. Another great dram is Oban. I think it is the best of both worlds in the sense that it is a coastal highland single malt, so they roast the malt with some peat, but you also get the seaside influence in a highland whisky. The best part about the journey, is the journey itself.

Let me start off saying I am no Scotch Expert in any way. However, I can say that I mostly drink high proof bourbon/Rye (Bookers, ECBP, WTRB, KC12, Sagmore Cask rye, ect...) and have found a few scotches that I quite enjoy:

Dalmore (12 and Cigar Malt - Both Great)

The Balvenie Double Oak (I want to get a bottle of the Caribbean Cask to try soon and maybe down the line might splurge for the Portwood)

Highland Park 18yr (I just picked up the Highland Park Cask Strength Release 1, but have not tried it just yet)

If you're interested in the Balvenie Portwood, grab it of you see it. It is no longer available in my world.
