fozcycle
I currently have a set of Mizuno MP-53 irons (5-PW + MPT Gap Wedge with the Project X 4.5 graphite shafts. My average driver swing speed is approx. 87 mph My irons are straight but a tad short (5 thru 8 is about a club to 1 1/2 clubs shorter than my other irons).. I know this is due to the relaxed lofts on the MP-53's. The 5 thru 8 irons are about 3* weaker than my other irons. If I replace the 4.5 shafts with 5.0's what will that do to my iron shots? Longer, straighter, shorter, etc???? skihippy
fozcycle, Putting a different flex in your clubs will not change your distances. If you go to far out of your realm of swing speed/shaft flex than you will start pushing the ball because you are not able to load and unload the shaft. The only way that you could find more distance is by getting a higher flight(more spin) shaft that could help you hit higher. But if your happy with your ball flight and accuracy, I would leave them alone. Longer, straighter, shorter, etc???? I found this neat code over at Ralph Maltby that will automatically narrow down shaft lines that works for what you are looking for by code. --> http://ralphmaltby.com/265 If you are looking for some shaft fitting advise then it might help to have your 6 iron swing speed, tempo / load on the shaft, what you don't like about your current shaft that you are trying to fix in a change in the shafts. I am not an expert but I personally don't like guess work and giving recommendations on that knowledge. Assuming that the SS is around 70mph with the 6iron I think a 5.0 is a better fit, so it would play more stable and likely bring down the ball flight from what the 4.5 is doing currently. I am assuming something in the 4.5 is making you question if it is the correct fit, I am just making pokes at what it could be. Only time a shaft that is too soft effects distance is over spinning it and ballooning shots, the opposite is also true in too stiff of a shaft it will not have enough spin to maximize carry, in both situations you will find that the shafts hit shorter then the correct fitted shaft for your swing. Relaxed lofts of the MP-53... This made me chuckle a little as I am playing irons at 1* weaker in the 6 iron through the PW then MP-53 are stock at, to me the short irons are stronger Callaway Epic Max 12.0 (-1/N) @ 44.50" w/ Graphite Design Tour AD IZ-7 Stiff Callaway Epic Speed 18.0* @ 42.75" w/ Graphite Design Tour AD IZ-8 Stiff Callaway Mavrik Pro 23.0* @ 40.00" w/ Graphite Design Tour AD IZ 95 HYB Stiff Sub-70 639 Combo (5-P) w/ Nippon Modus 3 125 Stiff, Standard Length, Weak Lofts (27-47, 4* gaps) Callaway MD5 Raw 51-11 S-Grind w/ Nippon Modus 125 Wedge Callaway MD5 Raw 55-13 X-Grind w/ Nippon Modus 125 Wedge Callaway MD5 Raw 59-11 S-Grind w/ Nippon Modus 125 Wedge Callaway MD5 Raw 63-09 C-Grind w/ Nippon Modus 125 Wedge Golf Swing & Putting -- Bruce Rearick (Burnt Edges Consulting)
fozcycle
Thanks, My 7 iron was 31*, but with the MP-53 it is 33*. I lost about 1/2 to 1 club on my length but gained more accuracy. Yup a 31* is nothing but a 6 iron stamped as a 7 iron. so yea i can see the 1 club drop easily. The other 1/2 a club could be a shaft if it is over spinning or too stiff to maximize carry. For me a "standard" loft is --> 19* 2i, 21* 3i, 24* 4i, 27* 5i, 31* 6i, 35* 7i, 37* 8i, 43* 9i, 47* PW... I will accept a +/- 1* deviation to still be able to call it the number it is labeled But hope my response helps, you might consider getting on the Mizuno Fitting cart and the Shaft Optimizer tool to see what it spits out for your swing, it should be accurate for your swing speed roughly. fozcycle
Thanks jmiller, My move to Mizzies was primarily because of the shaft. When i hit some irons with the PX graphite shaft, they felt totally different than other graphite shafys. I then thought I would get the JPX800's but the price was a little steep. That got me to looking around for used irons.....so when I found the MP-53's with the 4.5 shaft, I thought it might work.......and I dearly love them. At 61 yrs old and a Hcap at 15, I wanted to know if I could enjoy the game hitting forged irons rather than game improvement clubs. I am glad that I took that step forward as I am enjoying my game more now. RoverRick
One thing you may consider is that they are giving you too much spin, and robbing you of distance. You would have to check on a launch monitor. I know this was happening to me. Too much or not enough spin can effect distance. fozcycle
Thanks, I guess I should get tested for my swing speed and the shafts...4.5 vs 5.0 Either way, I find the PX graphite shafts give me a better trajectory than others.
