forged irons

Hello all... I am new to this forum and I'm looking for some insight on forged irons. Are there any suggestions on what I should look at? I'm tired of going to the big chain golf store and testing a club and then being told when I get out on the course I'll hit it straiter and longer than I am in the store. I currently play Ping but I'm open to other companies as long as they will work for me. Any suggestions? Thanks

I play the Nike VR-Pro Combo and as far as looks and feel are concerned they are the perfect combination in my eyes. I absolutely love them, distance, workability in a super attractive package. My suggestion, go try out your top two or three choices and decide from there.

Thanks for the advice... I think I'll look ito a club testing day and try that... Ping, Titleist, Nike, Mizuno... So many decisions.

I started not to respond to this because, No Mulligans are allowed.

Welcome to the site.

I was a Titleist forged iron guy, but tried the Mizunos based mostly on my affiliation with this site. Many of the regular responders are Mizuno fans, but we also have Wilson fans, and many others. jmiller did a review of various brands of muscleback irons, also I have listed three other topics about this and finally a place where to get some that seem like a really good deal.

Great reading! Thanks for all the help... I will be looking at the Mizuno and Ping for sure. I play Ping G20 irons and really like them but I think its time to move up. I hope...

I kind of figured you wouldn't be after playing a blade most people are not, I really can't get that great of a test in clubs that are on the rack. I tend to wait to test clubs that I can hit from them building me a club with a shaft that will work pretty well for me.

For example I tested the Titleist 712 MB about 3 weeks ago with a KBS C-Taper XS in the club that the demo tent built me to try. I only ever tested Mizuno clubs from their fitting cart where the C-Taper XS wasn't available the KBS Tour XS was so have used that for mizuno head testing. I Tend to like to test clubs when possible with the exact same shaft that I am used to playing, it takes on variable out of play when considering a buy of something new.

At age 61, I switched from SGI & GI irons back to Forged. I wanted to see if I could still enjoy the game with them...Wow that was an understatement! I now use the Mizuno MP-53's with PX 4.5 graphite shafts. They are shorter than the SGI or GI because the loft of the 5 thru 8 are 3* weaker. So I club up. These irons are so sweet and straight.

I am really having fun now.

One thing I missed when first posting is that Mr. Mulligan has his handicap listed as a 5, I think the perspective or assumption that he is using a GI & SGI might be a little bit off I just read Ping that could mean anything really in terms of which line he has.

A few things to just consider in terms of iron head design are the following

~ offset numbers

~ sole width and sole camber

~ bounce of the club

~ leading edge camber

A digger probably should use blades as the narrow sole width, low bounce, sharp leading edge tends to cut into the turf very easily. They need something with more bounce and sole width to help the club out of the ground.

A picker probably shouldn't use wide soles and lots of bounce with a not that sharp leading edge it is likely to bounce the leading edge into the ball hitting shots thin.

As most good golfer the angle of attack is somewhere in the middle and be varied so it comes down to what you like and are confident in playing. I happen to like MBs more then a lot of Players CBs, a lot of people don't have confidence in a blade. Do I think that if you are a 5 handicap it might be worth looking at, yes I do.
