Why is it so hard to just find driver heads without a shaft?

I do not understand how anyone could read reviews on a driver and just buy it online without ever hitting it???

It is what the overwhelming majority of golfers do.  They go with what their favorite PGA pro plays, what the social media influencers say, what the OEM marketing says, or maybe they swing it a few times but do no comparisons.   Most sales are people that buy off the rack.

I got a company trying to do that to me right now. I told them I have to get in a sim, try shafts, and do research.

I could play golf every day and learn something new each time.

I've seen my friends do it over and over again!!! I have a buddy named Tim and we call him Timbo Slice because he constantly hits this ridiculous towering "superfade " So he aims into the woods about 100yds out and left of the tee box and hits the ball which most often crosses the fairway and stops in the rough on the other side. He was hitting on my GC HAWK and driver peak height was 167ft and launch angle like 23° I had him hit a reg flex with low launch qualities and adjusted a driver to 8° and he hit a baby fade 270 instead of 220 but needless to say he had bought what Justin Thomas had and with no fitting or even demo he bought irons and a driver??? So his spin is like 6500 to 8000 and even though he pounded the club I set up for him with only 3010 spin he wouldn't hit it again nor would he try the ProV1 he is stuck on ProV1X which is a spinner???? Whatever he owns the name Timbo Slice and always will

I’m looking to set up a driver fitting soon. Just need to go to Denver which is two hours. But it’s worth the drive. Maybe Saturday.

Yeah it's well worth it and most places offer your fitting fee to serve as a payment on the new club.

Well hello there beautiful!!!

I sense a lot of love in this group for the TSI4 in the photo. May I just check whether a TSI2 would rate the same attention, compared to a TSR2? Keep in mind that the TSI2's (or TSR2's) real competition is my existing 915 D2. I am assuming that the Accra iW4 shaft would migrate from the 915 to the new driver, as it proved a real good match with the TSR2 when I was in the fitting studio.

No one addressed this for you, but flex is simply a letter painted on a shaft and is only relevant for that shaft.   There is no standardization in golf and a stiff in one  shaft could be a senior or x-stiff in another shaft.    Weight is definitely an important consideration when looking at shafts and makes a difference in most peoples fitting.   While OEMs provide guidelines for handicap, spin, launch, and flex,  you still need to actually try the clubs to make sure that it works for you.

Thanks @cnosil for the clarification. I wish I knew this when I started buying my clubs for the first time a few months ago. I stuck with regular flex for all clubs. It's only after getting a shaft fitted to my driver that I discovered that one manufacturer's regular might be quite different from another's.

Now I wonder if I should just sell everything and start the journey all over again - but with the added insight that comes from fitting. Where's the most value in getting fitted: wedges? putter? irons? etc etc.

The value is in being fitted for every club in your bag. You can kind of figure putter out yourself by rolling a bunch and seeing what works but from Lob Wedge to driver if you are not being fitted you are not maximizing your options bit that's not to say you cannot learn to hit what you have and I wouldn't sell all your stuff and take a beating. Just remember as you start to buy more get fitted

Marlin, you sound like the voice of reason. What I don't know does not hurt me. I did not know my driver+shaft was too heavy for me, and affecting my swing. After my driver fitting, I had no choice but to make a move on the shaft. I suspect going for any other fittings might end up with similar results. Thanks for the input.

Agreed and am envious of your situation. Cheyenne Wyoming doesn’t have anything other places have. We do have a good sim place, we can demo clubs at the course but that’s about it. Club fitters have come and gone. Hard business when you only have a few months but no population. Colorado provides opportunities though.

Now I wonder if I should just sell everything and start the journey all over again - but with the added insight that comes from fitting. Where's the most value in getting fitted: wedges? putter? irons? etc etc.

IMO, I would say no, don't sell everything and start over.   Figure out what your clubs are doing and where you think you are losing performance and go from there and compare current clubs to "new" clubs.    There is value in fitting each of the clubs.   I'd probably do driver and irons.     Fairway/utility/hybrids and putters are probably a little less critical.  People say wedges are important to get fit for, but I personally don't feel I have the talent to warrant a fitting.  Irons and moving it to wedges is about gapping.

@GolfSpy_APH may I clarify my understanding of your reply here, please? I went for a driver fitting, and discovered that I did much better with a Titleist TSR2 fitted with an Accra iW4 shaft, than my current 915 D2 (a hand-me-down from a generous friend) which has an Aldila Rip'd shaft on it. As a golfer of just six months vintage, it's been great to see that both my carry has gone up and the spread of my shots on the fairway has reduced. However, I cannot justify a new driver and a new shaft for a game that I have only just started. So I have settled for the Accra shaft on my 915 - even in this situation, my average carry has gone from 155 yards to 175 yards, because the Aldila shaft proved to be too heavy for me to use properly. Both the Aldila and Accra are regular flex shafts but the setup with the Accra is 21 grams lighter, and that seems to make a huge difference to my swing. When I started out looking for equipment, everybody talked about flex, but I have found that the weight of the shaft is rather more significant - at least for me.

I now know from the fitting experience I can do even better with a TSR2. I am interpreting your reply to this thread as meaning that I could pick up any used TSR2 12 degree where the head is in reasonable condition and regardless of what shaft is on it, use my new Accra shaft on it and get the benefit I could see in the fitting studio. Is this correct? Or do I need to pay attention to any other characteristics of a used TSR2 when looking for one?  Or is a new TSR2 fitted to the Accra the only way to ensure I get the right item?

Apologies for the lengthy question. Suffering from newgolferitis...

Even though both shafts have a label that say R flex they aren’t the same flex. The Accra is going to be slightly stiffer to flex than the rip.

Flex is only a label choice that the manufacturer puts on based on their criteria which isn’t an industry standard. Comparing flex can only be done in the same shaft line with the same weight class. Two different shaft lines  from the same company will have different flex feeling even if labeled the same.

The adapter in the 915 shaft fits the tsr2 driver

Agreed and am envious of your situation. Cheyenne Wyoming doesn’t have anything other places have. We do have a good sim place, we can demo clubs at the course but that’s about it. Club fitters have come and gone. Hard business when you only have a few months but no population. Colorado provides opportunities though.

So if you have a good SIM you can kind of monitor your fit yourself. Heck Cheyenne has way more train track than I've ever seen anywhere!! And the hunting is next level so you have that!!!

Two companies never sell shafts with club head. One is Wishon golf.  Other is k z g golf.  Both are custom  made snd sold through their dealers.  Both don’t believe it’s in the golfers best interest to buys club fully assembled . And that the shaft is just as important as the club head.   What’s most interesting is custom clubs are less expensive than major companies clubs.

This is my first time posting a topic on here.
I am wondering why it is so hard to just by a driver head and not have the shaft included?  I’m looking for a new Ping G425/430 Max head to replace my Ping G425 SFT that I’m currently swinging.  I have the shaft that I love and just need a new head, but do not want to buy a full set up.
Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Tyler

Not sure if someone has posted this or not, but I've gotten a bunch of heads only from Pro Clubs. Their website is proclubs.com out of Phoenix. I've seen dozens of G425's on there in both max and LS. Not so much SFT's though. Both new and used. Hope this helps.
