Colored Ferrules, Love 'em/ Hate 'em? Post 'em if you got 'em.

Recommended Posts

I am rebuilding my irons. I need two sets, so I am putting the C Tapers in the Hogan CFT's and either the DG X100's or the KBS Tour S in the MP62's. There are two reasons for this change, performance and aesthetics.

Performance. While the MP62's performed flawlessly with the C Tapers, they did also with the X100's. In spite of all of the promisses and launch monitor projections, the C Tapers did not significantly out perform the X100's in the MP62's. However, before the KBS fans get up in arms, they were infinitely better in the Hogan heads. I bought these in 2004 or 2005 just days before Callaway bought Hogan. And killed it, damned them. The hybrids have been some of the finest clubs I ever struck. The irons however were just ok. The ball flight with them was very high and a lot of spin.

Now last weekend I took one of the C Tapers and put in the CFT. And then yesterday, I removed all the C Tapers and put in the CFT's. These are perfect. Long, forgiving, accurate, and workable and feel great. They feel better than the Mizuno's did. Much lower ball flight and just the right amount of spin.

Aesthetics. In March when I won MGS FMofM, I ordered personalized grips in red and black. When I ordered the C Taper Shafts I ordered red and black ferrules. Intending to put these in some Titlesist ZB's. The way things worked out, I bought the MP62's. And then I bought some blue and white head covers for the Mizuno's. I am not a headcover fan in the first place but the Mizuno's were worth protecting. But, Mizuno's colors are blue and white. Titileist is red and black. And everytime I put the head cover on one of the Mizuno's it looked wrong to me. (Yes, I am that anal about some things. )

It never occured to me to put colored ferrules on until I saw Rookies, and some others clubs on this site with the crazy colors, and thought they looked cool. However, I may not be cool enough to have colored ferrules. I am not sure if I like them or not. I certainly like the red and black on the Hogan's which have red paint fill and black on them better than I did on the Mizuno's.

I bought white ferrules and white tour wraps to go on the Mizzy's when I put them together, but to be honest, I also like the black. I am pretty conservative and honestly have not decided. What you say probably will not sway me one way or the other but I am curious if others like the colored ferrules. I am posting a picture of mine, so if you have them post them.

The black and white ferrules are just stuck on a shaft. The red ones are actually glued in the Hogan 5 iron.

As you can guess, I like them. And you won't find a better place to purchase from than Cell Parts.

As an aside, you may be aware of better way, but if I want to save the ferrules, I put the head of the club in a cup or pan of boiling water. This is hot enough to loosen the glue and make the ferrule soft enough to slide up the shaft. Then I use the torch to heat the hosel and take it apart. The water is hot enough to melt the glue but not to hot to melt the ferrule.

I usually just use cool gel and then wrap in a wet wash cloth then heat.

Cool Gel? Is that what the kids are, or were, putting in their hair?:P

Here in this part of Texas we are lucky to have boiling water, ain't got not cool gel.

I like the colored ferrules,

Its the length that disagrees with me.

Long is old school and has its place on some clubs but now the new model just need something a bit shorter.

Driver - 44.5" 5.0 flex 10.5 deg Graphite Design XC 6S GP MCC4+ 1 deg closed

Irons - 5-pw, GW stnd length 5.0 flex same grip 1 deg flat. Type low medium offset cavity back, no diggers

Wedges - 56 and 60 tour grind wedge spinner and mcc4+ grip 2 flat 10 and 8 in bounce

Putter - Makefield VS LH

Ball - truvis

Carried in a Sun Mountain C-130 USA bag - BE PROUD.

HC - LH but 85 is a good number, playing in Ohio.

I was gonna say that I don't like the colored ferrules but McGolf makes a good point. The red and white don't look right to me, but maybe if they were shorter it wouldn't seem so out of place?

I imagine they look better in person, but I think I am too consertavative to feel comfortable with flashy ferrules, grips, etc.

I thought the same thing but decided to do it with the red and black. Did not like it on the Mizunos and put on white on them and now I really like them.

I actually have a set of MP30s I am going to reshaft at some point this summer, and was thinking white or "mizuno blue" ferrules would look good with them. You said you did white grips with those too right? I just got some blue crosslines that I think would match with blue ferrules. That would keep conservative with at least a bit of style :)

Congrats on the finished set.

I don't hate them, but also have never used them either. I just stick to traditional black and sometimes my wedges have black with gold rings that matches the writing of the Mizuno MP T-11 wedges in Black Nickle.

I met the fella that does a lot of Muira irons on the Island in New York.

He has a different colored ferrule on each club with a different colored grip from Iomic

Although I am not running out to make a rainbow set of iron but it did give and opportunity to see if I like the ferrules.

The colors offered are far better than the pictures show.

I could not do different colors on each one, I would start hitting one more than the others because I liked the color better. I actually really like the white ones with the white grips best. However, they may not hold up very long, I noticed that they are looking a little dingy. I have not washed them yet.

Gotta say I'm not a fan of the colored ferrules. I much prefer the traditional look. White grips are about as "wild & crazy" as I like to get ;)

Here is an update on the colored ferrules I installed. I assembled two sets of irons, one set with white ferrules and white grips, and one set of red with black stripes ferrules and grips. Two things have cause me to not like these. I must admit that they looked really cool when I first did it. But the white ferrules show marks where they rub against the bag and it has only been a few months. Granted, I play more golf in three months than many people do in a year. Neither of these seem to last as well as black ferrules. The black ones I have on some wedges also show scratched and dings from the bag, but you have to hold them up to the light to see them. The color ones show the damage more.

Also, I have to admit that I may just be too damned conservative to have colored grips. I honestly prefer solid color pants and shorts to shorts with patterns on then. Camo is about as wild as I get and generally there is a reason to wear camo. So while all the comments I have recieved about the colored ferrules has been positive, I probably will not continue to do that. I look down at he red ferrules and want to sing Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. The white ones still look cool.

I love the colored grips, and I even have put a custom paint fill on my Scotty Cameron Newport 1.5 and a white grip with red and blue accents. I have a red, white, and blue USA putter grip on my Cameron Big Sur and a red Scotty grip that I will put on next time.

Some white grips show dirt really badly however, the Golf Pride Tour Wraps do not. They also were just fine in the rain, but my Pure Tour wraps were not very good in the rain.
