42* at 7:30 this morning and we were the fourth group off the tee so we backed up and started on #17. I shot a 41/42:83 today with 3 birdies, 7 pars, 3 bogies, 3 doubles & 2 triples. Man was this round a roller coaster ride.....6/14 Fairways and 9/18 GIR’s. Net the 83 with my 20 Hcap and my 63 took 1st place.

My clubs were the PowerBilt Air Force Ones and I was putting with my Ping Ketsch. Clubs I had not used in 8 years.

The birdies were Par 3 #2, Par 4 #9 & Par 4 #14. What a round!

Visiting my parents today in Mt. Pleasant, SC.  It was 66* and sunny - shorts and short sleeves weather for me.  I can't complain much about the way I played.

Screen Shot 2019-01-19 at 7.00.58 PM.png

The little one played the front with my dad and me, and she finished it off strong with a nice par.

Very windy today. 12-15 mph steady with gusts up to 23. Course was soggy and wet, a lot of time searching for plugged balls in the mud. My white Truelinkswear OG were brown by the end of the round.

Another back 9 meltdown 37/43 for ANOTHER 80.

Started the back 9 double bogey, then rattled off 4 more in a row. After the 4th one I told my coworkers "watch, I'm gonna shoot 80" not knowing what I had shot the front, or where I was in relation to par at that point (I don't like knowing). Sure enough...

Actually driver was great except for maybe 2 holes where I over drew or blocked it, 0 penalty strokes and I had the same ball in play all day. Mostly just because I'm a scrub, especially when I don't have my number. Two holes where I was at a tweener distance I came up short and wasn't able to get up and down. One really bad 4i, fat 8i from 150, there were a lot of strokes that I could've saved, but that's golf for me.

Flagged a 7i from 165 though!

I kinda lost the golfing bug the last few months. Its been a effort to get out and play. Ever since I broke my leg 15 months ago most rounds have been painful both walking and swinging. This last two weeks we've been out quite a bit playing both 9 holes in the evenings or a full 18 in the morning. The attached is this mornings round. Its a 90 not the best but not the worst, the 3 triples were bad tee shots followed by incorrect second shots which just snowballed.

My putting was off this morning and I found it hard to get the green speeds. Most importantly it was pain free, enjoyable and a PB in GIR. I did not realise that until I saw the screen shot. I have a short game and bunker lesson booked for Thursday, I have lost to many shots in the last couple of weeks in bunkers and chipping around the greens.

I think I have rediscovered my mojo.

I played Lookout Mountain in Phoenix yesterday.  Beautiful weather but winds picked up to about 20 mph on the back nine.  I'm a hacker here on Bermuda grass!!  My apologies to all you guys who shoot over 90, but I'm just not used to it.  The greens are so much different than what I'm used to putting on, that I am guessing all the time and I'm always wrong.  It could have been a pretty good round if I had putted like I normally do.  I drove the ball beautifully.  I had seven 3-putts!!!  I couldn't get the ball to the hole, and as the ball slowed down it broke 3 feet more than I thought it would.  I was frustrated!!  On hole #16 I had a birdie putt... I wasn't going to leave it short like I did all day.  Slightly downhill, and apparently down grain... putted it off the green!  Then chip, followed by two more putts; a 3 putt with a chip in the middle!!!

I'll figure out the grass here by the time I leave for home next week.

Hey, you single digit guys aren't getting much empathy from us mere mortals - more like "welcome to our world"! 😁 We just returned from a 3 day trip to Tucson and the wind was howling at SaddleBack Ranch yesterday; and it was quite cool. The wind is going be here the region for a few days yet due to the Cyclone off the west coast.  Hopefully it and your case of 3 putt-itis subsides.

Oh, I forgot to add that SBR is gorgeous... makes buying a home there just for the views and golf course alone awful tempting.

just finished playing in south Texas - South Padre Island, Edinburg, Mcallen, San Antonio - and I'm not really up on types of grasses - I couldn't tell you that one is a Bermuda vs. Bluegrass, etc. ... just that they're different - so I don't know what type of grass it was but it wasn't what I was used to.

First the fairways were typically pretty hard.

I don't really take divots so it didn't bother me but I noticed a few things with it.

A. If you can get the ball on the ground it's going to run.  And I mean run.  I had to "learn" a new shot that my buddy showed me.  A 100 yard 5/6 iron 'chip' where you get the ball on the ground about 40 yards from the green and let it just run up.  Took a bit of a mental change as I was usually grabbing a wedge but with the tight lies and hard fairway you had to strike it well.  With the mid iron it didn't really matter much if you hit it fat/thin....it was still going to go.  I watched a guy hit a 3 wood 100 yards in the air and it ended up on the green from 210 out and another guy putt from 30 yards off....not kidding...I think he only had 1 wedge in his bag.  In New England the grass is too thick to play that kind of shot.

B. If you had the wind at your back you could hit some career long drives.  I'm not a long driver of the golf ball - about 260 - but I hit multiple "300 yard drives" and my buddy (who is a pretty long driver) hit a couple 330ish.

Second the distinction between fairway, fringe, green was extremely minor - if at all.
You could easily putt from way off the green.  Way off.  And the greens were usually hard enough that once it got on it was going to go.

Third you better respect the wind.  Big time.
There really isn't much to block the wind - no hills, a few palm trees, some scrub oak - but most everything is wide open so you have to check it on every shot outside of 50 yards.  There were a couple days where it was at least a 2 club wind and if you can't keep the ball down it became a 3 club.  Certainly something that took some getting used to.

Fourth there were no elevation changes and few "big trees" to bail you out if you hit a drive awry.
Okay - there were some very very slight elevation changes but I just wasn't used to the courses being as flat as they were.  This is both good and bad.  Good in that you didn't really have a lot of crazy lies or huge carries but bad in that you could be way off line and there was really nothing to stop the ball.  And for those drives that sometimes hit that big oak/pine/maple tree and kick back into the fairway?  Ha!  Forget it.  Not happening.  My buddy hit into the palm fronds once and I think the ball got stuck.  (Side note: with the lack of trees/bushes it makes it hard to make a 'pit stop' during your round) 😉

Had a great time and played much better than I expected after having not hit a ball for 2 months....after going 2 under for 9 holes I had another chance at breaking 80 but misread the putt and couldn't make it happen.  It's going to be tough to wait another 2 months for the season to start here. 😞

4 bogies, 3 birds, for a 71 today. Played at my old normal track after a few weeks at my new club when it seems hard to break 80. Putter was on fire with 28 total.

warm but windy today

Up and down day on the course today.   11 fairways,  9 greens, which I like seeing,  but  3 doubles and a triple are things I don't like seeing.   Struggles were with my second shots too many fat.  Did get in a groove for a bit after I stopped overswinging.   35 putts wasn't a bright spot. The MLA probably only survives for a single week.   greens were a bit fuzzy,  but really struggled getting the ball to the hole.

After my round i spent some time working on pitch shots.  Still a work in progress but I feel like I am moving forward.

Did 9 starting at 2:05 local time at my "home course". Mucked up #1 & #4, but posted a 46 that included 2 pars and my 3'rd-ever birdie! Iron play was mostly there today, which was good since driver & FW's seemed to have the day off...

Really stunk it up today.....shot 47/45:92 @. Babe Zaharias in Tampa. 40* at the start and 61 when we finished. I did have one birdie and I turned an eagle opportunity into a Par by three putting........ouch!

There’s always tomorrow......The Grasslands in Lakeland.

Not such a great score 84. But the how was a thing of beauty for me -

I kept hitting the stupid ball too far. My drives were 235 - 260 - I played this course 2 months ago and my longest drive was 232! (I was happy with that.)

I hit 8 iron on a hole where I hit 6 iron then and was on the back edge (3 putt). The next hole has a water Hazzard that crosses the fairway at 225. One hopped my striped 3 wood into that for bogey.

We played with a lovely couple who were up a set of tees from us - after the 260 yard drive (261 actually) the lady said, “How can such a little unassuming guy hit it that far?”

I’m loving SuperSpeed!

Oh and I walked - first time 18 holes walking in eight years.

Well, it's been a week and I have figured out the greens here in Phoenix.  I probably shouldn't say that as I'm playing the next 2 days before we leave on Friday.

After the bad putting rounds, we played a par 61 exec course and I shot 70.  I followed that up with 3 rounds on regulation courses with scores of 82, 77, and an 85 where i had a good round going but made 3 double bogeys on the back nine; just stupid decisions!  The 77 was at Arizona Grand GC; +3 on each nine.

Today, my wife and I played The Legacy Resort course; fastest greens we have seen yet.  Shot a +9 round of 80; only pars and bogeys.  Missed an ace on hole #11 by 3 feet; missed the birdie putt that had 1.5 foot of break, but made the 5 footer comeback putt fro par.

Headed out to Sun City to play with the old folks tomorrow.  Hope the greens are fast; I'm liking fast greens.  I also like Bermuda grass now, once I figured out that Bermuda grass on a golf course is just a whole lot of crabgrass strung together!  🤭

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
