How'd you play?

Oh, oops - forgot the rest of the story...
(- any of you older guys remember Paul Harvey?)

So went back to that same Par 3 the very next day to see if I could .. literally .. settle the score with those last 3 holes!

Except this time around I started off poorly - even with 2 Pars where I made a nice up & down each time after a short tee shot - for the first 6 holes I was +8. Made a mess of that #6 hole this time with a triple...

Then on #7 something switch "On" and I hit the green and made an "easy" 2-putt for par; #8 hit the green again .. albeit with a bit of a lucky bounce and roll towards the pin .. and stroked a solid 1-putt for a birdie; #9 hit a solid tee shot but slightly short-left and managed to sink the second putt for a nice par ... so -1 this time for those last three holes!
(..ahhh sweeet revenge... 😆)

Played a regulation 9 yesterday in very gusty conditions and happy that .. for the most part! .. was able to keep the ball on track. Except for one awful mis-hit* would've (cudda-wudda-shudda) finished at an average of bogey golf / +9 ... so making progress this season! And that's with two doubles (on both of the Par 5s!!??!!) and a triple (ouch!), but also with two solid Pars on each of two holes that I usually screw up...

First par was on a short Par 3 and second par was from an elevated tee into a fairway that doglegs right and leads onto a smallish and well-sloped uphill green with a deep bunker in front, a pond right and a marsh OB left and behind .. so a visually daunting approach which has too often gotten the better of me...

But this time... Decent tee shot, if short, but left edge of the fairway; second shot right where I wanted well into the dogleg. Set up for the approach to try and punch it low into the wind and aiming for the back left corner of the green - and hoping(!) the wind would hold it up and push it back. Landed pin high left, about 10 ft out. Yes - I made the putt! Really happy that I was able to par that particular hole in challenging conditions.

* Awful Mis-hit: I know exactly what I did, too, and this time it wasn't technique .. it was commitment / confidence. Wind was coming from straight behind and gusts were actually strong enough to knock over my wife's push cart! The green on this hole is large but exposed to the sun and wind so had a feeling it was firm and running fast .. and there's trouble behind the green on this hole .. so did not want to over-do it. I was trying to choose between 9i and PW and decided (or: thought I'd decided...) on a 3/4 swing 9i so it wouldn't go too high / get pushed too far by the wind. Well, I was hesitant and fluffed the shot out to the right .. lost ball .. had to drop and hit again... (and barely kept it on the green .. it rolled all the way to the back edge...)

My swing has gone into the crapper now I cant hit any greens I either pull or push every shot I have tried to fix at the range but it's all screwed up golf is frustrating at the moment. Last round shot 86 I have lost about 30 yards off my drives and my putting is still terrible.

A little chilly today. But got a wild 9 holes in. Started with 3 birdies in a row. Than the last 6 holes I was 16 over par for a 49. Not sure if I was nervous. Or I just stink that bad . Combination of both I assume. Was just fun starting the way I did. The guys were looking at me like “ who is this guy” . Well “ the guy “ came back to earth on the 4 Th hole -9th hole.

Not sure how I should feel. Great for such a miraculous start. Or mad for such a lackluster end

Keep it in the short stuff

... The Mrs is in town for a few days and she was just killing it off the tee. 210-230 with my old Fly Z cranked to 12* and a Tensei Blue L Flex shaft. Just a joy to watch. She hasn't played in 7 months so much of the rest of her game was very rusty but off the tee she was soooooo good.

... And saw one of the best shots I have ever witnessed on a muni. Playing Aguila's 6th hole, 347 from the Silver tees and I hit a 2 iron 261 leaving me 86 to the pin. Had a good 15mph wind at my back so I knocked down a 52* to about 10 feet*. Feeling pretty good about my 261 yd drive and my birdie putt, a ball rolls past my feet catches the tier and rolls back down to about 6" from the hole. We look around and see nobody until the guys behind us that were playing the tips at 377 are heading down the cart path ... and that was one of their drives!?!? They were looking in the desert 50 yds short of the hole and my wife yells at them "Your ball is on the green!" Guy drives up and apologizes and my wife says "Apologize? That's the best shot I have ever seen so nothing to apologize for" then walks over and high fives him. Am I a lucky guy or what?

* No I didn't make the birdie putt.

Today was very interesting, we had 22mph sustaining winds with gusts of 40mph. So, with that in mind, I shot a 43/45:85 today with almost no help from my Putter. The Par 5 #13 was reachable in two, and I was just 5 yards off the green but chunked a chip but scrambled for the par. The Par 4 #16 was reached in two, which I hardly ever do, only to 4 putt. Argh! I landed on the back of the green and the pin was in the front. However, it was fun trying to fight the wind.

I don’t know how you played in that wind today. It was brutal here (an hour from you), it wasn’t gusts but sustained winds.

By the time we got to the back nine it was a 22 mph sustaining wind. #13 was the first time I hit over the lake and landed safely in two. On #16, I did my best heading into it by hitting a low line drive. Like I said, it took a normal day of golf and made it interesting.

I've actually had some mild success when playing in the wind, especially on par-3's for some odd reason. Had one shot from an elevated tee that normally plays about 150-yds or so that was direct into about a 25-mph sustained breeze that made it more of a 200-yd hole. I pulled 3w and cranked one that  nearly went in! Another time, again direct into the teeth of the wind on another par-3, I hit a 7-iron where I would normally pull a 9 or PW that went right up with a nice little cut and wound up about 10'. I wish those were more common...

Happy Easter Avid golfers of golf spy.Went out and played 9 holes today. Shot a 46 with one double and 8 bogeys. Just one of those rounds where my approaches or drives were off just slightly. But slightly enough to put me in spots that made a great recovery very difficult. On top of that, the pins were placed up on knobs. The greens crew is off today and tomorrow. So they placed the pins in spots where excess traffic wouldn’t harm the ‘main’ green area that much.

When I look back. There is such a fine line between a par and a bogey. It’s really just a matter of a few yards left or right of your intended target. And those slight misses can really put you in some tough predicaments

Keep it in the short stuff

Today will be a day I don't ever want to remember except for one hole. My drives were short, irons didn't cooperate and chipping and putting stank to high heaven. Our course was soaked - water on the fairways and the rough was impossibly high. We had to walk it which is almost 8 miles - guess that didn't help my game - plowing a cart through wet fairways.

On the other hand my nemesis hole #8, I pared today. In all the years playing this course the best I've done is a bogie.

Any day we are out and breathing is a good day. You will get them next time. A long season left Tony

Keep it in the short stuff

You ever have one of those days....

...that's starts out good on the first couple holes with 2 birdie chances:

IMG_20190421_073120.jpg

IMG_20190421_073927.jpg

And then you get to the green and it looks like this:
IMG_20190421_095803.jpg

You can't see it but there are earthworms all over the place also... I assume those little brown dots are from the worms pushing up the earth...and it looks like they aerated a couple days ago.  It was nearly impossible to putt....

We had about 1-2 inches of rain in a 30 hour period and it meant a lot of this on the fairway:

IMG_20190421_101751.jpg

Hard to see but the ball is 3/4 buried - in the middle of the fairway.

It was like standing on a wet sponge and trying to hit the ball... I was actually happy to get in the rough on some holes.

Somehow managed an 83 but the course did not help me one little bit.... not one.

but hey - I was playing golf!  😃

... My Phoenix winter vacation is sadly coming to an end. It has been a blast! Played Whirlwind Cattail today and really enjoyed the course. With winds 10-15mph but gusty not constant, I was playing the silver tees at 6300 and the two MD's I joined up with were playing the gold tees at 6725. I was 2 under on the front with 2 birdies and the rest pars, but made the turn and bogied 10/11 to get back to even. On 17, a 490yd par 5 with a little helping wind, I had 205 to the green. Both playing partners had no chance from 515 as my drive was a good 60yds past them. I hit my 4 iron into the lip of the bunker and barely got out and settled for par. They asked me why would I play the wrong tees when I was outdriving them both by 20-30 yds all day and a few even longer. I smiled and said "This is the first time I have played this course, I am 66 yrs old and have either of you considered that maybe you guys are playing the wrong tees?" I hit a 2 iron off the 18th tee so I was about 10 yds behind their drives and stuck a 6 iron to about 8 feet from 178yds and uphill. So much for a tee advantage. 😂  Rolled in the birdie putt to finish with a 71. After grinding out some mid 70 scores my last few rounds it was nice to be in sync and have a day where everything came easy. 9 more days in Paradise!

Happy Easter everyone!!  It is also our 12th anniversary, so my wife and I headed to the course.  My BIL said we wouldn't last 6 months!! lol   For those that haven't heard the story... my wife and I were married on the 1st tee of our course, said our vows, turned around and teed off.  Golf for everyone all day.  Today we played with a couple that played with us 12 years ago.

I made the turn at +1 with a birdie and 2 bogeys.  Then I birdied #10.  That's when I said "I could shoot my age, theoretically."  hahahaha  The golf gods got me.  For some reason I couldn't hit the ball like I did on the front nine.  Shot +7 on the back nine for a smooth 80.  I did hit 12/13 fairways, but only 4 greens.  Scrambling saved me on the front nine; didn't save me on the back nine.  I missed an ace on the 144 yard #4, hitting my 9i 143.9 yards.  It was a nice birdie, but my wife and the other woman in our group also birdied.  Life is good!

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

With how much rain we're getting its not golf yet. My home course was closed. Forget about it and keep hopes up for good weather. Today is upper 60s, I'm heading out for 18 after work.

Nice!  Where'd you play?

I grew up in Creswell but also lived around the Eugene/Springfield area and have a lot of friends there.  Glad to hear the water has subsided and the courses are open for business...I heard there was quite a bit of flooding.
