Tuesday I decided to take a break from the Arccos and just play, so I bagged my Hogan Ptx’s and Tkt Wedges with my Cobra Woods. 41/46:87. Not too bad, because I know where I made a couple Course management errors that ended up costing me some strokes.

Curious what you mean by take a break from the Arccos?  Does having that system tend to draw you into looking at each shots data as you play?  It sure looks like a cool system and I'm considering having it added to a new iron set (whenever that happens 😁) but I could see it might become distracting - perhaps the paralysis by analysis syndrome?

Was rolling along nicely until the last 4 holes I went bogie, bogie, bogie, double bogie. Which made my final score a +5 76... 😢

Got back to town today just after noon. Was on the golf course by 1:45. Had a bad case of the double-bogies and had only 2 pars all round for a crummy 98. It actually felt better than that since I kept Mr. Snowman at bay and driver was actually on point most of the afternoon. Was excited to put my new 7w in the bag and ditch the 4i, but only had to pull it out once...what a club!

Won a charity scramble with some good buddies yesterday, then drove 30 minutes to play in our weekly 9 hole dog fight and shot 38.  Back to back bogeys to start and pars the rest of the way.  Missed two very makable birdie putts on 3 and 7, so overall a good day but could’ve been much better.

Your game sounds similar to mine .... it was a standing joke when I'd come in and the pro would ask how I shot.  I'd say 78 or so, he'd ask "how many doubles" ... me: 3

... Wow, you guys in the Midwest have really had it rough this year. I figured coming home from Phoenix 5/6 Spring would be in it's full glory with sunshine and 70's mixed in with a few late spring showers. So after playing most every day all winter long I have not played in 10 days!?!? Cold, windy and very wet. Since I played a ton of golf already in 2019 I can't cry baby too much as you guys have waited ALL year just to see Mother Nature give Old Man Winter an inexcusable extension. I hope for all of us the sun makes it's late arrival with a vengeance and keeps the monsoons at bay.

It’s like I’ve never played before. Honestly, if not for decent driving, and some chips and putts- I could have been in the 90’s

iron striking was abysmal. Somehow shot a 81, but shoulda been 100 ugh..

ill curl up into the fetal position and cry myself to sleep after the iron play today... I’ve never been so lost....

A tale of two nines for me today. Felt good warming up, but maybe getting up at 530 to make a 730 tee times was just too much for my brain today. 46/37 for an 83 at a short (6300y) but hard Palmer course up at Turtle Bay. The course definitely doesn't play to my strength (I don't know if you can call it a strength vs. just the only thing I'm competent at currently) as I wasn't able to abuse my distance with Epic Flash. I had 3 very make-able birdie putts, and 7 total looks at birdie, but was only able to sink one :(

In a word, terrible. No idea of my score because I left my bloody Shot Scope at home. Halfway to the course and I'm going through things in my head and had an image of it sitting on the charger on the kitchen bench. 🤬

I'm now hitting a hard draw bordering on a hook with almost every club and I have no idea why, except for a slightly flatter swing. I may have to go with two different swings for woods and irons because the driver swing is not working for the irons...either that or having the irons bent to accommodate.

BTW the course wasn't as wet as it has been and they actually got to mow the rough.

... I have 5:30am call times, meaning I have to be on set at 5:30am and it is always a struggle. But a 7:30am tee time results in the starter on his walkie talkie "Did the Chisag single show up yet?" .... "No sign of him" 😴  Hang in there Yung'en, keep hitting GIR's and the putts will start falling!

So if it's hooking then you know one thing for sure- the face is closed to the path at impact. Whether that's because the face is pretty neutral and the path is way too much inside out, or because the path is fairly neutral and the face is shut is what you need to figure out. But at least knowing that first part helps you on the road to discovery

I have tried to tell my students for years the reason their second shot is better, is not because they learned from the first or made corrections, although both of those are true to a small degree. The reason their 2nd shot is better is because it doesn't count.

Oh yeah, and boy don't I know it....

Heard a funny line that encapsulates all that perfectly:
"Golf is easy .... just hit your second shot first!"

this was about a 140 yard approach shot on a par 4.

Short is dead - in the junk
Short left is dead - in the bunker w/impossible up and down
Long is dead as it rolls of the back and the cart path is back there so it goes into the woods.
Right is dead as there is a giant granite rock there and path is just out of the picture on the right with more woods.
There is a little bailout short right at about 100 yards or you can aim for the green.
The green is decent sized so you don't have to hit a perfect shot but standing in the fairway it does look intimidating....
To make it even worse, the second time I played this hole there was a group standing on the green (a 3some) and asked me if I wanted to play through - I said 'sure'... so they're standing on the green and watching me hit this approach shot..... (GULP).... I landed it about 20 feet right of the pin, took my 2 putt and was pleased.

Was gonna ask you about the "context" of that photo in your 'crossed a barrier' post .. yeah, that's some approach! And CONGRATS!, by the way .. Love what you said about "playing the game of golf vs practicing golf swing" (..had an instructor tell me that exact same thing).

And way to 'stick the landing' 😉 on that play-thru approach shot - nice 👍

I had one of those "head scratchers" yesterday.

Par on 1. Screwed up the 2nd hole, triple. All pars the rest of the front 9 except for the par 3 8th. I topped an 8 iron into a waste area between the tee and green. Hit my reload within 5 feet, but gagged on the putt, took a 5. Still, I was very happy with 5 over on the front.

Then the wheels came off. The back 9 starts with par 5, 3, 5, and a really tough par 4. I went 9, 7, 8, 7 on them. I just completely lost my swing, which is becoming a problem at some point during almost every round I've played lately.

Then just the way it left, it came back. I finished the last 5 holes 2 over, which made me feel a little better. The mid round collapse took me completely out of the running in the low net/gross competition I was playing in though.

Now that it's over and done I'll chalk it up to being in the middle of a swing change, but that doesn't make it less frustrating when its happening in real time.

Played in a charity outing this past Thursday which our group all started out thinking was "best ball" .. which we'd all started out thinking was "everyone hits their second shot from the best drive, then everyone hits or putts from the best approach" .. but which we then found out was everyone plays their own ball and the best individual score becomes the team score for that hole .. which I later learned IS "best ball"...... (Thanks, KennyB!)

Anyway, I had either very good (for me) or very bad (for anyone) holes... Was able to contribute a team par and one or two team bogeys; also had a few other bogeys and doubles but at the same time the other guys did, too. But then on too many holes I made too many mistakes and had i-dunno-how-many 7s.....

Short game and putting were disappointingly weak, but on the upside most of the full shots were (surprisingly!) solid - even a few from messy or uneven lies - plus I even started to get the driver going! Very happy with that!

So I won my first GCAmTour event in 3 years.  The official picture hasn’t been posted yet, but this is me drinking beer from the trophy.

Driver wasn’t treating me well so I teed off almost every hole with the 3 iron.  Kept it in play and putted well.  Not a great score (81 in second flight), but good enough to win that day over 25 other players.

Some jerk was upset that such a bad score won, but F him.  Sore loser....

Congrats!! Nice job 👍 ..must feel good!

Forget about that jerk - if he's so upset then he should've posted a much better score himself.

Had my first penalty free round in what may be over a year. Also had my first round in a long while with no score worse than double bogey.

Finally may have the handicap trending the right direction again.

Played my local exec and on a driveable par 4 that plays around 300 yds to the back of the green from the long tees... I'm usually pretty close.. within 10 yds or so. I tried stepping on the gas a little harder and accidentally drove through the green by about 20 yds. This was just pure smash and roll. No cart path or sprinkler bounce.. where the hell did that come from?! And how can I get more of it?Screenshot_2019-05-11-18-44-06.jpeg

the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..

I’ve been a bit “fat”on the ball lately, so I tried the “Kooch “ method of holding the club in the air behind the ball, and then swinging.

i was knocking them really cleanly. I will be doing that next week to see if it works again .

Played 9 today after work.+1 with a 3 putt on a par 3, and a birdie on 18 after sticking a 4h to 2".

Hit 5/6 fairways  and 8/9 GIR. Been working on my overal setup...especially focused on alignment. I think Ive been crossing myself up.

With some trepidation, I played the first 9 hole loop with my vintage set (plus Bettinardi SS38 Armlock).

The stats: (-2) 6/7 fairways, 7/9 greens, 13 putts, 3 birdies, 1 bogey

I decided on the tips (3539 yds) for this initial test and soft, extra furry fairways made for some unusual club selections (more on that later).

Highlights/lowlights:

The persimmons are lasers and my only missed fairway was a driver that I blitzed through an uphill dogleg. Birdied the first followed by three ho-hum pars that included my missed fairway and first missed green.

Then came the (450 yd) 5th - tight dogleg right with a bunker on the outside corner ~280 yds off the tee. I pulled 3 wood to stay short of the trap and hit one a little off the toe that only limped out there ~250 yds. The hole was cut back right behind a bunker (203 yds) with a little hurting breeze. Long is bad so I selected 5 iron, flushed one right at it and watched greedily up until the moment it dropped short in the bunker. Oh that’s right... my 1962 5-iron is a modern 6-iron loft... that was never enough club. A lackluster extraction with the triple duty wedge led to a 1-putt bogey.

Tees were moved up on the 7th and the hole was cut on the front edge (133 yds) into a one club breeze. After a quick loft recalculation, solid 9-iron stopped 8 feet behind the hole. I made the putt for birdie number 2 but that wasn’t the interesting part. I left the flagsticks in all day, and in this case, conditions converged such that the shadow gave me a dead nuts perfect line from the middle of the hole, right through the center of my ball. It felt very strange standing over the straight putt thinking, just roll it right down the shadow, but it worked. Next hole I had 153 yds from the center of the fairway with the same breeze now helping to a hole cut back edge. Pulled the 9-iron... again and ended up 8 feet behind the hole... again, for birdie number 3.

Takeaways: I need to lose the butter knife deuce and put another wedge in the bag. Because that 2 iron looks downright mean and trying to feather one 82 yards to a hole cut over a bunker with a vintage 53* wedge doesn’t feel like a high percentage shot. Despite it not feeling totally comfortable yet, the Bettinardi is very good. Apparently there’s a whole other unconsidered advantage (albeit low probability of occurrence) to leaving the flagstick in that makes it feel even more like cheating. Playing with vintage clubs is fun (read: engaging) and surprisingly doesn’t make me wince when I’m adding up the tally. Although those ancient steel shafts give me the achey elbows.

Finally, as reward for reading through all that nonsense, a persimmon porn clip: this 3-wood was unintentionally pegged 291 yds down the hill... leading to the aforementioned low percentage 82 yd (went 102 yds) gap wedge and my first missed green.

Went out Fri morning after work with SWMBO.. I played a horrible round.. Had a great time with the Mrs.. Who played really well.. we only played 9 at local 9 hole course about 15 min from the house. I had one of those days where the decent shots were sandwiched between crap and garbage.. I played K-Sig's new ball..

OK I understand that feel does not indicate performance holy crap they felt bad.. somewhere between a Mojo and a Pinnacle... they did seem to spin and stop nicely, but damn they feel bad..
