That's where a 5 hybrid would come in handy.   😉   Bounce is ya friend in those soft wet conditions.....

My thoughts exactly.  The 9th hole is short enough that I hit hybrid off the tee; we were waiting on the group in front and I was chipping on the tee box and said I need to use the hybrid to chip.  Love my hybrids so I may as well put them to use in another way.  No chips were needed after the 8th hole so I didn't get a chance to try it out.

Keep your head dead still until well after impact.

Yeah, I know sometimes that can be an issue with me. I tend to do pretty well with thoughts about dead legs and steady head. Probably need to reaffirm those thoughts.

I missed four putts (one each) on 14, 15, 16 and 18 by a combined total of less than eight inches. Two went about an inch right, one about an inch short and one about two inches left. I was close, just couldn't convert.

I do need to give myself better opportunities by sticking my approach shots closer. Eleven of my first putts were from further than 15 feet, and five of those 11 were from 30 or more feet. Not a lot of great scoring opportunities from those distances.

After having such up and down success all year so far with my 54 degree, I moved up to my C300 PW because of the added bounce. Chipping has been soooooo much better in the last few rounds because of that.

Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde showed up today! 41 on the front with a lost ball and I doubled both par 3’s. First multi birdie round of the season.

The back 51, with 4 7’s. Only memorable shot on the back was my near ace. She was tracking! I tried to walk in the birdie putt like Tiger impersonating Na, and I came up short 5 inches.

Had probably my best weekend of golf ever.  It was my course's first "major" of the year; a two round net stroke play event.  As a 7 handicap I shot 73-78 to shoot net -5 and win the top flight by 11 shots.  Here are the net scores.

1544144405_JuneCup.JPG.d3203ed3e07a443e2e10a7f07144ad7a.JPG

Best hole of the tournament for me was hole #2 today, a medium length par 5.  Knew I wanted no part of the water on the right so I purposely took a super conservative line towards the next hole's fairway on the left.  Next up was a nice high baby draw with the 4 hybrid to 28 feet for an eagle putt.  Center cup all the way.  First eagle of the year and it came at a great time.

27 putts.

Hit it everywhere and made two doubles. Just a terrible ball striking day. 13th hole sums up the day. Drive to base of tree. Have to hit it backwards to fairway then  almost hole 50* tap in par. Short game can sure save a score.

I like the @THEZIPR23 format so I'm gonna copy it from now on 😄

81 (+2/+9) on a course that was playing as a Par 70 today due to one of the holes being closed (there's a temp par 3 that they subbed in for the closed par 5)

5/13 fir

8/18 gir

34 putts !!!

Couldn't get anything to drop today. One of the greens had some serious grass cancer growing all over, and the other was randomly punched but the others weren't? No excuses for the other 16 holes though, I was just not making anything. Ball striking was pretty decent finally, but fell apart in the back after 5.5 hours in the hot sun.

Best round for me to date...41/44 for an 85 with 34 putts. Yes, I actually sunk some flippin' putts today! A 12-footer for bird, 2 others from 20 & 22' for pars and another 12-footer for a par also. In fact pars were the order of the day...8 of them with four-in-a-row to finish the front 9! Driver again was pretty good, but for me to score like this, pretty much everything has to go right. First hole though was a blow-up 8 +4, but I just put it behind me and enjoyed the evening. Happy boy!

Added a photo of the scorecard from my Golfshot app...
Congrats on the awesome round! It sounds like the putter was on fire, 34 putts and sinking some long ones.

Yeah, we tee off on weekends before 6:15 so we can finish at a decent pace. Usually 3:15 or better for 4 people pushing carts. If I had to spend 5+ hours out there, I don't think I'd golf much.

Soooo, back to your "normal" comfortable setting?  🤣

Sadly, yes - the 💩 monster hit me again... Maybe I should only play 3 holes as a "round"...?

Played 9 a few days ago .. beautiful clear warm day with almost no breeze (in other words: no weather-related excuses!).

#1 Par 4 dogleg right - topped tee shot but playable; solid second shot into a good position; solid approach though I misjudged the uphill added distance and left it short, though only a foot short of the fringe but in thick grass so couldn't putt it, had to chip it .. good chip at the pin but just a bit too energetic and it ran past .. but made the comeback putt.
-- So a bogey (which I was happy with after the opening tee shot).

#2 uphill Par 3 - good contact on the tee shot but pushed it wide right of the green, landed pin high on a downslope; wedge shot on was good and landed where I'd intended but it ran out further than I'd hoped; downhill comeback putt was tracking to the pin but left it a foot short.
-- So another bogey (which i was happy with after the tee shot landed in what could've been trouble).

#3 short Par 4 - ok tee shot was low but down the middle; then what should've been an (ahem..) "easy" wedge approach turned into a bad miss wide right of the green, but luckily in a spot where I had a decent look back onto the green .. hit it ok but this time left it short of the flag .. only to over-read the sideslope break and actually miss on the high side.
-- So a third bogey (which i was happy enough with after that fluffed wedge shot could've again put me in bad trouble).

..But then...

#4 long Par 5 - a very solid tee shot was the only highlight here.
-- Skipping over too many very messy details I finally finished this hole +4 Quad.

#5 dogleg left uphill - mix of good and not so good.
--  Double.

#6 dogleg left, uphill approach Par 5 - mix of more not so good, including a 3-putt, vs good.
-- Triple.

#7 Par 3 plays downhill - made a grand mess of this one until the *third* wedge shot which I finally put close enough to the pin for a 1-putt.
-- Double.

#8 short uphill Par 4 - another topped tee shot, another second pushed wide right followed by another fluffed wedge into a bunker .. which I escaped but still short of the green.
-- Triple.

..I dunno but after that run I was not feeling too "comfortable"....!!

#9 straight Par 4 downhill tee shot - weak contact put it short left in the rough on a sideslope; good second back into the fairway and into position; good approach was right distance onto the green tho wide left of the pin with a long but flattish and straightish putt and a chance to make a par or even a bogey ... but, yep!, 3-putted.
-- Double.

Final tally: +19 (55) for my personal worst 9-hole round this season, and I think in several years!

So.. I've been playing more rounds this season, trying to gain more on-course experience .. Thx! @chisag .. and work more on "making every shot count", but I still seem to be a very loooong way off from actually playing bogey golf.

So then.. is worse-than-bogey golf my personal "comfort level"?

Trekked out with a buddy of mine to a track I've never played before out in Star called River Birch. Should be called "River ******"!!

It tore me up after my 85 the day before. I had an awful day driving and could not find a green to save my life it seemed. And when I was finally on the dance floor (they were all mostly quite small surfaces), every putt had some kind of break or double-break to it and I burned several right by that just kept rolling out, and out and out! They (the greens) were granite-hard and rocket-fast and I had troubles all day with pace. I also should have known better to play 2-days in a row. I was beat!

Went 51/46 for a lousy 97. No birds, and only 2 pars. The good news is that I won the day against my bud and he owes me a beer.🙂

I got back on the course Saturday morning for a match play after the disaster of the league round. The guy gave me 10 strokes and still beat me 4 & 3 which was about as through of a butt whipping as it sounds. He had three blow up holes including one where I self destructed off the tee and on my third shot. Otherwise I think he shot 76ish as a 11 handicap not counting the two or three big numbers. It's hard to beat a guy when he's that consistent, especially when your own game is not doing well.

I found myself down 4 after 8, rallied to one down on 12 and then gave up 3 of 4 holes. I had about 3-4 holes stretch where I went par-par-bogey (par 3 over water) - birdie.  I also parred a par 5 after hitting my second shot over the green.

First round in a long time where I putted reasonably well, hit good chip shots and felt some confidence coming off the green. Hopefully the start of things to come . Total Round was 47-41 for an 88. I just realized I broke 90 for the first time this year. Huh.

I was reminded that being a sweeper/picker of the ball is a dangerous way to play.... but it's the only way I've been able to since I started.

For the first 15 holes I could get off the tee no problem and then I'd have 115 in or 138 and thin the shot only to go off the back of the green.  Figured out on 16 that my angle of attack was way too shallow - even for someone who picks the ball..... which explains why I didn't have an issue off the tee because the ball was teed up (duh!).

Good news is I finished Par-Par-Birdie and stuck a wedge to 2 feet on 18 to win our match 1 up.... sucks that it took me 15 holes to figure it out.

I really need to work on my AoA with my irons and wedges.... what I think is 'steep' is probably still pretty shallow.

absolutely!  but if you're off just a little bit ... just a small margin then you can hit the ball thin - or low on the face - and you suffer.

But I agree with you - there's nothing wrong with it and when it's on it is GREAT...I've shot 3 of my best rounds ever so far this year doing it.... I've just got to better at understanding my miss and making corrections for it earlier in the round.

Fuhgeddaboudit.   The next round will be a lot better.  Don't dwell on it.  You started off OK given the tee shots.  Let's get those 3-putts off the scorecard!!

Ha! Thx, Kenny!! Yeah that closing 3-putt was especially stoopit but they're not what's killing me overall - still averaging 2 putts per hole each round, occasionally slightly better.

That last round had a very large number of poorly executed / badly missed partial wedge shots .. all from inside 100 yds, and all usually not such a big problem for me. The bright was when I finally got next to the green most of the chip-ons were good. Next problem area was the topped tee shots, followed by a few poor iron/second shots.

It's weird that generally I kept the ball in play and moving towards the hole, and generally I feel as though I was making good shot and club choices, but ... I just made way too many (simple?) errors in executing too many of my shots that day....

The quest for "better" continues!!!

Sometimes I find one just has to can the driver into the penalty box and swallow some pride. A very hard thing for me to learn especially when my dumb ego gets in the way... Glad you fellas had a great day out there together. Don't worry. Driver will be back I am most assured-Cheers!

For sure! What's nuts is the round previous I just hit the driver SO well - low cuts and high draws on command. Good grief this game...

Played in a scramble today with 3 co-workers, we shot 2 over. Not bad considering that it was my first time on a golf course this season, another played on Friday for the first time this season, and the third member hadn't even touched his clubs in 5 years. Our fourth plays in a scratch league weekly 😄

We had a few holes where we used my drive & approach shot which was nice. I had a great bump and run from about 30 yards out that ended with a tap-in. I also had some absolute trash tee shots and I couldn't hit my Heavenwood off the deck at all, which is surprising for me. All in all it was a heck of a fun day.

Nothing wrong with being a sweeper like @chisag said; been that way since I started playing.  Yes, you can hit it thin and suffer, but if you are a digger and you are off just a little bit, you can hit the ball fat - and you suffer worse.

With that being said, I have been working on increasing my AoA... trying to take more of a divot.  Not an easy thing for me to do!!

I don't really know how I played today. I felt like I hit the ball well, but just didn't score well. Shot an 80, but it could have been much, much, much lower. Played a really nice linksy course with the wind blowing 40mph. Straight foward, well maintained, but still HARD. Lots of shots where you know exactly what you need to do, but it's still hard to pull off. Probably ended up having 10-12 bunker shots today. Fun day.

... Shot an 82, my highest score in quite awhile today. My 28 yr old son starting working at a CC as a bartender several months ago and finally took me out on employee day. First time he has played the course. 20+ mph winds, greens rolling at 12 with plenty of slope and just a very tight old school golf course with a plethora of bunkers lining the fairway right in landing areas and around the green. It is a fair test but very difficult if you are not in the right spots and of course first time playing it I was in plenty of wrong spots, especially on the greens. "Had I know I would have stayed on the left side" kinda thing. But an enjoyable test of all the shots and I don't see many old score courses like this anymore. Wind died down on the final 4 holes and it was a real treat. Of course spending the day playing golf with my son is as good as it gets, so a high score was the least of my concerns.

Any day playing with one of my grown sons is such a blessing. Those days are precious and score is secondary by a number impossible to articulate. I'm glad the wind died down eventually and I'm sure the next time you play will be a different story.

This last weekend I had rather uneventful rounds of 84 and 79.  I am still not putting very well.  The 79 came on Sunday from better ball striking, hitting more greens, but I'm still averaging about 33 putts per round; 2-3 more than normal.

The nice round came today with my walking buddies.  One guy hasn't been playing for there for more than a month; a 76-year old Marine Col. pilot (I was informed that there are no "former" Marines.) 😉  he's a better player than I am; probably a 6 hcp, but we usually are about the same off the tee.  We only played 9 holes, and he shot +1; I shot +2, bogeying the first two holes which are the easiest on the front nine.  I was happy with that.  I outdrove him on most holes; I had a couple of 230+ yarders; no wind.  HUGE for me, but summer is about here, so fairways are firming up!!

On the Par 4 #3 hole (#1hcp) shown here looking back to the fairway from the green:

IMG_0721.thumb.jpg.8a5c8d7af9879dbf0ff32c8002a65b0f.jpg

water all down the left side and in front of the green and high grassy mounds all down the right side of the fairway; I hit a slight draw 230y to the center of the fairway, then a wedge to the center of the green 3 feet from the hole. Nice birdie on a hole that I make bogey 50% of the time and occasionally a double bogey or worse.

On the 146y par 3 #4 hole I hit a 9i to 8 feet pin high; missed!  The 565y par 5 #5 was driver, 3W, wedge to 2 feet; didn't miss that one!  I also managed to par the 546y par 5 dogleg left #9 hole with a pond in front.  Here's a view from the fairway looking toward the green from over 300y out... do NOT want to go left; bad grassy hill!!
