fozcycle
Shot 42/43:85 today with two birdies, one of them was a 20+ footer on #18! Mr. 82
Played Reems Creek today and was playing really well. Was -1 through 16 before I had to quit. The Golf Gods actually made fun of me at a resort course when I hit the green and spun it back in the water, then holed the next shot for par. Popular Post Peaksy68
Played ok today, getting used to my physical limitations, after a poor round last week. My last round was awful, probably pre determined by a few things,, a good score prior, a network hack at work, and, sadly finding out that a member of my club that I had a great relationship with had died just as I was walking off the practice green. I shed a few tears with his brother, who is also a great bloke. My game was garbage, but sometimes golf comes second. This week I decided to pay a bit of a tribute to my mate. He was the opposite of me in dress sense, but very similar in attitude. I gave him the nickname of "Fifty", short for Fifty Shades of Gray, as he always managed to wear multiple shades of gray, with actual colour rarely getting a run. Our sense of golf fashion couldn't be further apart. Happily I played pretty well. Had 11 over playing off 10, with a triple and 2 doubles. Putted well, and drove it solidly. A couple of awful 95 yard sand wedges cost me a bit. Great weather and great company made for a really enjoyable day. Catching up with my late mate's brother after my round was a great finish to the day. R.I.P. Garry. Yesterday I had the honour and pleasure of teeing it up with @GolfSpy Barbajo at Firestone Country Club. Yes, the hat came out, along with the skull shirt! We played the West course...the South was having a charity scramble and it looked like the North was getting maintenance done, but both of those courses are L O N G, so the West, using the hybrid tees ran around 6100 yards and was a good length for us. I ended up shooting an 88 with 2 penalties, so it could have been lower. The greens weren't as fast as I thought they'd be when we teed off, but started to get quicker on the back 9 with the sun out. The fairways were great and the rough was OK to thick on different holes. But, can you believe we were still fixing other peoples ball marks on the greens...c'mon people, you're at YOUR club, fix the damn ball marks. Overall, it was a fantastic day and I thank John for his friendship and hospitality. Can't remember what hole this was. Hole 16. Hit it to about 6-8' with a 6 iron. This is the second hole. Tried going over the bunker but sliced to somewhere in between the two bunkers on the right...ball lost in plain sight. Had a blast Matt! Always good to tee it up with you. Played the South on Friday - it's a bear of a course and it had a sizable portion of my ass for a snack. Did lip out a par putt for bogey on The Monster, #16. We played it at about 630 yards - it's a great golf hole (I'll post some pix later). We played the Member tees at about 6500 yards, which is a bit over my limit these days, but it was a hell of a lot of fun. The greens on the South are pretty small, with lots of false fronts and subtle - and not so subtle - breaks. The West was a lot of fun to play. Some say of the three courses at Firestone, it's the weakest, but one guy Thursday night said it well - the West has two major problems: the South and the North courses. If it was all by itself it would be considered a hell of a course. Popular Post GolfSpy Barbajo
Some pics from the South Course at Firestone... I think this is the third hole - short par 4. This is taken from the right rough - it's a harrow hole - I hit a 3 wood off the tee to the center and had about 130 to the pin. Pulled it significantly left, hit a tree guarding the green, pitched up and two-putted for a very lucky bogey. This is the view of #16 from the fairway. This is the second shot -- already hit a pretty good drive to get to about 380 yards. The play was to hit to where the group in front of us was standing, near the shadows on the right hand side, leaving about an 8 or 9 iron into a tiny green. I pull-hook-scruffed a 3-wood into the rough to the left of that fairway bunker. Had to hit a 9-iron just short of the pond in front of the green... Cut it kind of close, don't you think? The pin was cut pretty close to the front - about 50 yards from this spot. This is one tough golf hole... The plaque on the bridge crossing the pond to the green... This is the approach to 18 - it's a deep, narrow green and they put the pin way in the back. The trees are crazy - it's like kicking a field goal. And yes, I pulled it into the tree on the left and dropped into the front bunker. Solid double-bogey finish! View of the first tee for the South Course, and the Lodge. They have 30 double rooms you can rent up in the Men's Locker room, plus a ton of villas along 16, 18 and across the street on the North Course overlooking the lake. Kenny B
We had an hour frost delay this morning. My wife and I were paired with a father/son. I asked the dad if he played often, and he said Yes... about 5-6 times a year. As usual, we get paired with nice people but take a lot of time. I always feel like I have to rush my shots so we don't fall too far behind. They just don't play ready-golf. We played with a "caddie". A high school girl needs to caddie rounds to apply for the Evans Scholarship. Smart young woman; wants to be a nuclear engineer. I am disappointed with my 81, that included 2 birdies; one being a 30 footer on the par 3 #17. I was one club short off the tee. I managed to screw up #18 after a great drive; plugged the ball in the greenside bunker, and made a double bogey. 7/13 fairways 7/18 greens 30 putts. Oh well, there's always tomorrow! Popular Post perseveringgolfer
77.........but I actually played well, overall. 'New' driver showed promise (first time ever hitting it), irons were crisp, wedges surprisingly good (after utilising Jon Rham methodology), putting still good with the 'new' putter. The 77 came really from 3 bad drives so I'm off to the range today as I know what needs to physically change on the driver- grip and length. The good drives were actually the best drives I've hit for a long time, hence why I say it shows promise........I wasn't fitted and it was a quarter the price of the latest offerings out there. Hit it ok today just too loose. 6 bogeys is unacceptable. Greens are still not healed so I think I’ll blame it on that. Here is 13th hole at Bayonet. Just happened to have my partner video me and I hit my best drive and only birdie of the day. I absolutely LOVE Bayonet and Black Horse. I got in around 80 rounds between the two courses when I was living in the area. Best deal ever for active duty military and the courses are no slouch! Mr. 82
Played another course I had never played before in Quitman, Georgia. It’s a short course where some of you bombers could reach half the par 4s from the tee box. But it has an interesting mix of holes and is pretty tight with very small greens. But because I had a lot of wedges into greens I was stiffing them to within 10 feet all day long. Sadly, two of those bogies on the back nine were three putts from within 6 feet of the hole both times. That’s what happens when you blow your first putt by and it’s longer then your first putt. Oh well, another day on the golf course is still better then any day at work. Popular Post Kenny B
Walking day with the guys today. ABSOLUTELY beautiful morning!! Sunny and 58º with no wind. The course had a little tournament today, so the course was open on the back nine. We only played nine holes like most weeks, but we always play the front nine. Nice to get out on the back for a change... it's a much flatter walk. Shot 38 (+3) and had a career long drive on #13. My buddy is always longer off the tee than I am, and he hit a great drive. When i hit mine, I knew it was good. Both of us in the middle of the fairway and I was 25 yards past him!! 253 yards!! Huuuuuge for me. Love fall golf!! The geese are flying through now and crapping up the place. Here is my tee shot on the short par 4 #14 just in the rough next to the geese on the right... tony@CIC, cnosil, MattF and 8 others 10 1 Quote “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
