How'd you play?

I never was able to play my 790’s on my recoils either...

went to my mizuno mp5’s on 115 gram steel and haven't looked back ...

ive been hot ever since I started the forward bump pre-swing , early set of the wrists -think Dustin Johnson’s swing- (except that I’m a fat old man) but that move has eliminated the fat shots, and I’m just playing nasty right now. Another low 70’s round, that’s 3 in a row since the “new move”. And it’s not like I’ve never done this move before, I’ve just been trying new things- that I eventually proved were not for me. Now I’m sure I’ve got the swing to take to my grave. Haha yea... we’ll see...

Lost $168? I can relate. In our Club league we can opt in or out for skins. When I opt in I lose and when I opt out I would have won skins. Now I just tell the Club Pro my skins money is as good as a lottery ticket since I don't win with either.

Wind again!!  Unbelievable!!!  Same temperature... 46º and wind 30+ mph.

We decided to play anyway.  Here's a pic of my lovely wife holding the flagstick on #1.  The wind blew the flag off, I guess; it was gone.

IMG_1199.thumb.jpeg.95a8aca8a6bc2023e7f7aaac8a6fa027.jpeg

I played the front nine in +8, but we quit when it decided to rain sideways.  This was probably my last round here until next month.  We head to Palm Springs on Wednesday.  It had better be nice and warm with NO wind.

Getting to play in Ohio in mid-January is blessing. After my last round of only +6, was expecting to come back to earth. Leaving my putter at home didn’t help. Ended up 89, my best score at this course ever, and more importantly played with the same ball the whole round.

The weather has been horrible here lately as you have read in may posts, but I have played fairly well anyway for the conditions.  Apparently, I play worse when conditions are ideal.

My wife and I flew out of snow and 16º on Wednesday, and yesterday we played Indian Canyons GC North Course in Palm Springs.  Sunny and 68º with no wind... shot 87.  But it was the short game that left me.  Front 9 par 35 was +11... back 9 par 37 was +4 for a smooth 87.  On the front 9 I couldn't get the speed right and I didn't know where Indio was, even though I've played this course many times.  Hopefully, I got the "after travel bad round" out of my system.  12 more days until we fly home.

We are staying next door to Terra Lago.  Played both courses many times, but it's been more than 7-8 years since last time.  We are here for another 12 days so we will likely play them several times.

My wife's sister-in-law and her husband stay in a house by Shadow Hills.  We played there with them 2 years ago.  He is a member at the Yakima CC in Yakima, WA.  He has had some health problems, and they won't arrive until until two days before we leave.  We might get a round in with them before we fly home.

Really bad day... frustrating when I play poor golf in nice weather on a good course.  We played Cimarron GC with my wife's brother again.  We have played it many times.  A wide open course with no trees, no wind, but I still managed to find a few very deep bunkers.  Another terrible round for my short game.; I swear putts were breaking uphill; I could not read the break today, and gee whiz the putts sure did break.  There was slope but not a lot of undulations in the greens.  They were a little slower than yesterday's greens which made the putts break hard when the ball slowed down.  Shot 89 with NO pars on the back nine.  I hope I can figure out these greens in the next day or two... so frustrating!!

I couldn't find water in the ocean with driver today and it hurt my score for sure. Then, my bag broke when I lifted it into my trunk. Pretty disappointed in Sun Mountain after such great forum member reviews prior to me getting one. Guess they don't make em like they used to? The nylon or whatever it is that connects the handle to the front of the bag totally disintegrated -- guess I'm in the market for a new one.

I have the same fear about my SM bag. Heard rave reviews about it but the materials feel very cheap compared to my old OGIO bag. Sorry to hear.

We had an assistant pro at the Yellowstone CC that used to play on the LPGA tour.  I was struggling to break 80 on the course and asked her what I could do to break that barrier.  Her reply was pretty simple --- what are you thinking about on hole 15?

Another trick I've used --- break the 18 hole scorecard into 3 hole cards and try to shoot or break 13 for each 3.  After 3 holes, forget the score and play the next 3.  If you can successfully shoot 13 or better on each of the 3 hole stretches, you've shot a 79.

Good luck!

That sucks. I’ve been looking at bags and the ones that look to be the most durable from a fabric standpoint are the Jones bags. Nice looking twill.

... Changing your behavior is a learned skill. I was lucky because at an early age I played Qb and when I threw an interception I could let it fester or forget it and move on. Festering was counter productive and it did not take me long to learn that, so when I threw a pick I learned from it and moved on. Next possession it was already forgotten and I was concentrating on the play that was just called. Nothing else. Same thing for acting and auditions. Once I finished an audition, I let it go completely because it was out of my control. The more I did it, the easier it got until quite often the next day another actor would ask if I had an audition yesterday and I would reply yes, but don't remember what it was because my mind was on the audition I was about to have right now.

... Golf is exactly the same. As much of a cliche as it sounds, you can only play one stroke at a time and that stroke is the only one that matters. When you do that, thinking you need 5 more pars to break 80 will not be an option because if you are only concentrating in the shot you have right now, you will have no idea what you need to break par. The only time I am aware of my score is when I have all pars because that is hard to ignore, but once I have a bogie, birdie or eagle I lose lost track because I'm only thinking about the shot I am about to have. Nothing else is important. Same thing for hitting a ball in the water and thinking "I need to hit a couple of great shot to save bogie". If you hit it in the water, take your drop and only concentrate on what is the best shot to attempt right now. This will improve your focus and your execution.

... Facing a long putt, entertaining the thought that this is a 3 putt just waiting too happen is the same thing. That's 2 more shots ahead of the shot you are playing. Look at the putt and only focus on your speed and line and hit the very best putt you can. The rest will take care of itself. By thinking positive about the only shot you have control over, you give yourself your best chance of making it a good one. And repeating myself, but the same thing happens if that first putt rolls 6 feet past or comes up 6 feet short. Forget the putt you just made and only concentrate on making the putt you are now facing. By now I hope you can see every single shot is a singular challenge and as a competitor you want to embrace every challenge with your best effort.

... I know some of you are thinking this is pretty much impossible, especially after playing many years, but it really isn't. If you are serious about breaking 100, 90, 80 or 70 play golf and only focus on the shot you have to make right now. I think you might be surprised at your score when the round is over. It is also much more fun and relaxing to hit your the shot to the best of your ability giving it your best effort, then shift your focus to your partners or enjoy your surroundings and only get back to the golf when preparing for your next shot. Remember, this is a learned behavior so if thoughts creep in about future holes or what's needed to break 80, just recognize it and then keep doing the best you can with concentrating on one shot only and you will get better and better at it!

Played poorly again, but was going into the round under prepared and to be honest, using it for recreation. New role at work has been flat out, my current role hasn’t been filled so 2 jobs at once has been draining. Another week of madness and things should settle down.

Hit the pin 3 times during the round, but none dropped.

Big bonus of the new role is working 1 afternoon shift a week, so I’ll be able to get an extra round in.

Played a course in Indio that I had never played before.  I had heard good things about it 2 years ago, and I met a guy on Thursday that just played it and said it was great.  So today my wife and I decided to give it a try...  Eagle Falls GC at Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino.  It's just down the street from where we are staying at Terra Lago.

Shot 84 which is better than my two previous rounds down here in the sun; even had a birdie!.  The course is 24 feet below sea level according to my iPhone altimeter.  Shortest drives I have ever had!!  I added 2 extra clubs for the distance just to get close to the green!!  I played better because the "everything breaks towards Indio" mantra doesn't apply when you are in Indio.  My putts were more online but I struggled a little with speed.  The greens were the slowest i have played on the past two days; rolled nice, just a little slow.

The round didn't start out very well... the starter was an a-hole; worst starter I have ever met on the road.  Apparently, he is a woman-hater, because he was a complete jerk to my wife.  Everyone else was very nice, including the marshal.  There were 3 foursomes of guys in front of us that were very slow; some party, I guess.  The round took 4 hours and 50 minutes.  Terrible after our 3:40 round on Thursday.  I wished we were in front of them.

Eagle Falls is a nice layout, but the fairways are undulating.  Being a short hitter at that altitude, landing into an upslope meant no roll in the fairway.  I hit mostly FW and hybrids for approach shots even though there were many short par 4's.  Nice waterfall on #18.

39 degrees yesterday and wet underfoot.

Glad to say this winter golf run of good play continues, wonder if wearing 4 layers incl supression top is keeping my swing tighter.

Anyway, gross 72, 4 birdies and only missed 3 fairways.

Decided to choke down an inch on driver and it was superb.

Putter also hot after standing taller to max the 34.5" shaft and have the blade flatter on the green, 29 putts which is awesome for me.

A disaster round today.  46/44 ... not one aspect of my game was working today.  Drives were short, approach shots came up short, even taking the colder temps into account. Chipping was poor and putting was worse.  I could not wait for the round to be over.  Ball striking, in general, was really lackluster.  Started the round with the temperature about 35 or 36 and foggy -- foggy enough that my rangefinder was rendered useless.  Sun didn't show until hole 17 and then the temps began to get into the low 40's.  I'd like to blame my poor play on the weather, but it was all me.

Maybe I should have started a thread for our golf trip to Palm Springs, but I'll continue to post my rounds here since I started them here.

Well today we didn't play.  Took the day off.  We drove down to the Salton Sea to see what we could see of the sea... it's about 340 square miles; twice as salty as the Pacific Ocean, and 234 feet lower according to my iPhone altimeter.

IMG_1208.jpeg.e9994436c58e1ae5e3d5fb5ccccb3dd7.jpeg

On the other side of the Salton Sea is a road that goes to San Diego.  We drove up into the desert past a crap ton of ORV riders and campers.  It's a recreational park!!  Think 5th wheel and motorhome campers with dirt bike and 4wheel vehicles running all over the desert!!  I guess that's why the local gas station was selling 111 octane racing gas for $8.99/gallon.

About halfway between Palm Springs and San Diego... out in the middle of nowhere... is Borrego Springs.  I never knew it was there.  There are several golf courses; 9 and 18 holes.  We stopped for lunch at Rams Hill GC, a Tom Fazio out and back course (no turn at the clubhouse) that looks beautiful.  Rates are $105 during the week and $130 on the weekends.   Go figure!!!  My wife knows one of the marshals!!  He's 80 years old and worked with her family when they owned a lumber company in north Idaho.

Here's a picture from the patio where we ate, looking back down #18.  I'm not sure I want to drive up there again this trip, but now that I know it's there... maybe next time.

We spent a week at the RV resort in Borrego Springs a few years ago.  The Rams Hill course is the only course worth playing there.  Other than golf or ATV riding, there's not a lot to do in BS.    We're going to be in Indio next January ... you guys going there again next year?  We can have our own thread 🙂
