80 again. FOUR birdies!!!! Ugh. Two 3-putts, two doubles. Chipping yips came back today.

Nooooo! I’ve had those chipping “problems” and hard to work hard to get rid of it. I had them so bad one time I chipped from 10’ almost completely around a green B4 I actually hit the green. Almost needed therapy.

Shot 77 today - not bad for a guy who plays once a week. But I forgot to charge my shot scope watch do used the ARCCOS app as my GPS.

It credited me with an 18.

Here’s the result...

So aggravating. I get them when I play with people I know, and I played with a former player of mine today. He’s great to play with, no pressure, and it’s laid back, but he’s scratch and I tend to put pressure on myself. Ticks me off. I was doing SO well the last couple weeks on having good contact too! Time to get the mat and box back out!

Beautiful day today for my 3rd round post-shutdown.  We got off to an early start at 7:46am; still only playing twosomes, so my wife and I are still riding in separate carts. The good news is that all of our rounds this week have been around 3 hours long; don't have to wait on anyone and nobody pushing us.  Perfect!  However, this can't be good for the course.  Most of the players in the morning are members or have a Player's card ($250 annual fee and 1/2 off any price).  Not much revenue coming in.

My play is getting back to somewhat normal, but driving and short game are still giving me fits.  Note to self:  Don't spend a hour using the weedwacker the day before playing golf.  Sheeeesh!!  My right shoulder and arm were sore!

41/38 = 79
8/13 fairways
8/18 greens
31 putts

The thread about getting or not getting an ace because of the COVID-19 pins came to mind on the par 5 hole #5.  A poor 3rd shot left me 20 yards short of the green.  I hit my 60º off a tight lie that flew into the "cup"; hit the flagstick and pool noodle at the same time and ended up 20 feet away... 2-putt bogey!!  My worst shot came on the par 5 hole #9 after my best tee shot of the day... 137 yard putt down the fairway with my 3W.   🤬  Double!

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I played Arrowood in Oceanside today. Very nice track, but very tough and my score reflected the difficulty.

90 (ESC 89) 47/43 - 4 pars, 10 bogeys, 3 doubles and 1 triple. Gross.

FIR 3/14 (21%) - The cause of many of my issues. I did not drive the ball well today at all.

GIR 6/18 (33%) - I had several 50+ foot leaves that all resulted in 3 putts. Frustrating.

38 putts with 5 3 putts. Yes I still love my Evnroll, but putting poor putting compounded the issues I have having off the tee.

It was a fun day out overall, but as usual I have some work to do!

If you ever get a chance, take a trip up north to Temecula.  It's been 10 years since I was there, but I enjoyed Cross Creek GC, an Arthur Hills design that is out in the middle of nowhere.  Maybe it's surrounded by houses now, but it was a very peaceful round of golf.

I get them chipping yips when I’m playing well and get relaxed and then BAM! Takes about 2 rounds 2 get out of my head which doesn’t have a lot in it sometimes.

Ugh

I've really been struggling with my ball striking the last two weeks or so, and I just can't figure it out. Yesterday was a cool, very windy day here,  and my problems with it got exposed. I shot a 93, and that's with my short game and putting better than normal.

I really need to get this sorted out... the driver is going nowhere, and the irons are going everywhere. That's not a good combination.

Pretty much describes my game since we got to play last Tuesday.  I've managed to scramble around for a couple of OK rounds, but not today.

The wind was up today, but not enough to be horrible.  I just couldn't get comfortable swinging any club.  Shot 87 with 3 doubles.  Hit 10/13 fairways, but no distance with any of them.  Only hit 3 greens...  ☹️ with 29 putts.

Had a Jekyl and Hyde round today. Only had one chance at birdie on the front, then shot -2 on the back. My normal shot shape is a push draw but everything started straight today and then had my draw. Walked back over to my house after the round to get some more shots in and still couldn't get the ball started to the right, hopefully it fixes itself overnight!

Fair...
A relatively mild Exec but we made it tough. I had one bird, 5 pars, 3 “others”. Must have been a problem morning my bird was the only one out of 4 groups.
We went to breakfast after and we were the only filled table in the place.

Got in my 2nd round of the year Sat. It was much better but score does not reflect How good.. I went 52 44 for a 96.. Lost 3 balls, but pretty sure someone picked up 2 of them, since I could see where  they should have been but when I got there they were not there.. I took my penalties.. I also had 2 puts that literally hung over the lip of the cup.. Course was in amazing shape, my game on the other hand was still a little off.. but had a great time...

But at least you got to go to breakfast and sit at a table, so you've got that going for you... which is nice!

Sad that people pick up balls, especially these days.  The first day out last week I saw 4 balls lying in plain view and there was no one in any direction that could have hit them there.  Even so, I wasn't touching them!!

... Yup not touching "lost" golf balls. Add to that I am so used to picking up broken tees on par 3 tee boxes as well as new plastic tees someone forgot on par 4/5's. It is just such a habit and I had to stop myself several times.

I had a habit of doing that as well.  I always used broken tees lying around on par 3's, and if I found a regular tee like I use, I picked it up.  Not anymore!!

When we moved to our new house last December, I found a large bag of wooden tees that are likely 20+ years old, so... short.  I threw the bag in a box, but I thought I would never use them.  When our course opened up last week, I grabbed that bag specifically for par 3 holes.  I'm not touching tees on the ground anymore.

Finally the season got going last few weeks. We started men's leagueI go right from car to the course, opting ot practice 3-4 hours before we tee off when no one is a tthe course.  We're not allowed to take out pins and there's no rakes so we can take the ball out of the bunker. It's a weird time here but seems like we are adapting although I'd like to see more ways of staying further apart.

The weather has not exactly cooperated either, it's been 2 Weeks of temps 20 or so below average and it's been breezy when it's anywhere near mildish. Last round I played 18 I shot a horrendous 104 which was very frustrating. Came back and after a range session and more time around the short game area managed to shoot a 43 in league night. It's so nice to be able to get out and hopefully I can play a few more rounds in the morning when it's a lot more quiet.

Got out for three holes today with my son. Why three holes, well sustained 40 mph winds made three holes enough. #1 playing straight into the wind was driver-5 iron for a 340 yard hole. #2 was driver-6 iron for a 354 yard hole. The par 5 3rd downwind was driver-8 iron playing at 530 yards. At least I got out of the house for an hour.

Had the afternoon off for a lesson, and afterward stopped by my home course and bought my membership for the year. Walked on for a quick nine, which was not the right choice following a lesson (I should have been on the range, hah). Nonetheless...

- 17 Putts (1 3-putt, 6 2-putts, 2 1-putts)
- 1:45 Round Time (The twosome in carts in front of me was taking FOREVER.)

Obviously, with the fairway stats, I'm still struggling off the tee, which was the focus of my lesson so now I have some stuff to work on. Putted pretty well again today, left a few right on the edge. The three-putt opened the round after having a 12-foot birdie opportunity. The greens are really fast for the time of year and unfortunately didn't account for that.

Hit a handful of really good irons, some more decent approaches/pitches/chips, but really need to put the ball in better places off the tee box. All there is to it.

It's frustrating to go backwards after spending time and money on lessons over the past six months, but to be expected, I guess. Lots of bad habits and technique to get rid of! And I do have to remind myself that I'm not so far off from where I was at this point last year, as the chart from Grint shows (all nine hole scores at my home course):

Had the afternoon off for a lesson, and afterward stopped by my home course and bought my membership for the year. Walked on for a quick nine, which was not the right choice following a lesson (I should have been on the range, hah). Nonetheless...

Pretty much always backwards before forward after a lesson. I took one in Jan of 2018 it took until Mar of 19 to feel comfortable with new swing.

Well, an interesting day, if nothing else.  We had the Seniors Stroke Play tournament today.  Started off ducking hooking my drive on #1 par 5, Had to hit a 7 iron over the trees to get back into play.  Hit a 6 iron maybe OB, hit a provisional maybe OB, hit another provisional on the green.  Both balls were indeed OB,  2 putted for a smooth 9.  Great start, Carl!  Dunk a ball into the pond on #7, next shot off the green, chip and manage to one putt for a double.  Take another double on #8 when I hit into a big cedar tree and end up with a smooth 46 on the front.  9 holes down and I'm already 10 over (playing to a 6 for this tournament, mind you!).  Despite dropping another ball in the pond on the backside, I manage to shoot 39 on the back.  Nice 85 for the round (83 posted).  4 penalty shots and 3 balls lost!!!  I rarely lose golf balls, so to lose 3 new Snell MTB-X in one round is most frustrating.  Even with several birdie opportunities, including 3 right after taking the 9, I couldn't manage to sink the putt for birdie all day.  Oy vey!
