Things worked in unison and for the first time I felt like I could actually be decent at this maddening game! Sank a 15-ish foot putt on the first hole and thought, "oh no, the dreaded first hole birdie" After 2 bogeys and 2 more birdies, I stood -1 on the 9th tee box and totally blocked one to the right. Heard it hit the cart path and I would later discover that it went OB. Wasn't able to get up and down from 178 and made a disheartening triple. I thought that I completed the choke as I normally, inevitably do. However, after missing the green 10y right on the next hole, I chipped in for birdie and got back on the "what did I step in this morning, is this really happening" train. Kept it steady and I knew I was well below my previous best score of 79 standing on the 18th tee. Semi blocked one but got a lucky bounce and ended up here Thankful that I didn't choke, I hit the next one extremely thin into the front pot bunker. Almost up and downed it but lipped the putt because it had a little too much pace. I knew I had beaten my previous best, but didn't know it was by 4 strokes! Absolutely stoked right now!! Thanks for listening to my story, internet friends Congrats, man! Must have felt awesome. dlow206
Played very well today (for me). Started out with a front 9 of 58, which wasn't good, but saw promising glimpses off the tee with driver. Then I went on to the back 9 and shot a legitimate 44 and this was from the blue tees since the guys I got paired with insisted on playing blue. I normally play white. No more snap hooks off the tee, and was hitting drives with 240 to 250 carry, which is a long distance for me. The change I made that turned my driver around from a complete liability was only two very simple things, switched from a standard size grip to an undersize, and then held the club in my hand more firmly. After my last round, I discovered my left palm was coming off the grip at the top of the swing, and then i would regrip which would cause my left wrist to cup and open the face. From there, I would usually snap hook it from trying to save it late, or I would hit it somewhere way right. This was no longer the case with holding the club more firmly. Jmikecpa
Another good day today. Finished at 1 over 72 with an adventurous start. Hit my drive on 1 into the left fairway bunker; 50* wedge over the back into a waste area, fluffed the pitch shot and then chipped in for a routine par. Shot of the day was a hybrid from 261 on the par five fifth hole that left me 30 feet for eagle...and a three putt par. Putting is still a work in progress but slowly coming around. First of all, congratulations on the weight loss! Taking off 30 pounds in the winter with Thanksgiving and Christmas is truly impressive. I gave up golf for years, from my mid twenties to my late thirties. I had a lot of other hobbies to pursue and golf sat on the back shelf. I didn't pick it back up until about 7-10 years ago (it sad I can't remember exactly when) once I lost the people that I shared those hobbies with. It's hard giving up something you love for whatever reason. I can't imagine how the weight loss has affected your swing, but I know change like that can do a number on a lot of things you do. Whatever you do, just know there's a group of fellow golfers here that will support you. The most important thing is you find something to do that you enjoy and makes you happy, whether that's golf or something else. Lots talk the talk but you are walking the walk. ... About 5 years ago after a bad back period where I spasmed with almost any kind of athletic movement, rehab got me in shape and ready to play again. But for some reason I was still tight on the tee with a driver. I think I can safely say I developed the driver yips. It was horrible. Topped shots, off the toe, thin and a swing that quite honestly felt like Charles Barkley. I could tee off with a driving iron just fine but as soon as I put a driver in my hands my set up instantly felt off and I had zero chance of making decent contact let alone hitting a decent drive. I think I was playing to a 0 back then so my goal of getting to a + index seemed like a dream that would never come true. With a problematic back I can't practice as I need to hit and walk, keeping my back as loose as I can. I went thru a short period of just teeing of with a driving iron but recognized that was the cowards way out. I just decided to relax and take whatever the golf gods had in store for me off the tee. ... I wish I had some words of wisdom for turning the corner but it was just good old fashioned perseverance and things slowly came around. This whole thing took about a month but playing 5 or 6 times a week it seemed like years so I think I know what you are going through. Passion for the game, a positive attitude and not giving up is all I can offer. I am pulling for you! MattF, cnosil, silver & black and 10 others 13 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... I’m sure it changed your mobility and the swing is slightly off. If you don’t have the passion right now, that’s ok! Take a couple weeks and come back. I would recommend a review of the static fundamentals, grip, posture, alignment and the famous Harvey Pennick drill of just clip the tee. Don’t worry about a ball, just knock the tee out of the ground. When my swing goes weird for awhile that always sorts me out. Popular Post chisag
... Such a strange round today or as we all know ... just another day playing golf. Best day I have had off the tee in quite awhile and hit some really long drives. On one hole I hit a PB so really swinging well and hitting the center of the face. That said, I hit 6 fairways!?! I was within a foot of the fairway and several times barely an inch into the rough. I did not hit one bad drive and only hit 6 fairways. The only time it really bit me is on a hole with a tree the blocks 60% of the fairway with water left and OB right. Really tough driving hole but since I was feeling so good off the tee I decided to hit over the tree with a slight cut. Wind was only around 5 mph but dead left to right so it would help. I hit it well and cleared the tree, but it never moved right. So I double crossed myself as the wind didn't do anything but help it keep it's line. Rather than hit off the tee again, I dropped in thick rough and had to punch out. T100-S 7 iron got me on the green for a 10 footer that I just missed on the high side, something I did a lot today. Double bogey. ... 2 birdies and another bogie left me with a 73. Sounds great but this is a links style course and wind is it's defense, so 1-5 mph and I should have been in the 60's with the way I was striking the ball. But those barely into the rough tee shots took a toll and I only hit 9 GIR's. The good news is this is the best my swing has felt in 2020 and the best contact I have had in quite awhile. Golf is such a humbling game and every day is a new challenge. THEZIPR23, yungkory, MaxEntropy and 8 others 11 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... Ventus Red Velocore 5R Fairway: Qi10 5 wood ... Kenny B
Well, we had more T-storms last night but not much rain. Woke up to a temp of 54º after Fri/Sat temps around 97º. Hands were cold and the wind was up... 20-35mph. Cold! Played about the same as Saturday shooting a 79 with one birdie, but I had no short game whatsoever. Couldn't make a putt over 5 feet. Highlight was the short par 4 #14 hole where yesterday I hit my 2nd shot long to the back of the green and made a 40 footer for birdie. Today with the high winds, I drove the green!! I usually don't try it, but with the favorable wind Why Not!! The ball ended up near where my 2nd shot was yesterday, but they moved the pin to that lower shelf at the back of the green, so my eagle putt was about 10 feet. {read the last sentence of the previous paragraph again}. Dang!! THEN the couple we were playing with said "Let's play another 9 holes." I joined this club 5 years ago and have never played 27 holes here. NOTE TO SELF: "You're too old to play 27 holes." Shot 49. Missed it though, no practice greens open so having a downhill slider for first real putt was not fun. Turned around on 3 and somebody turned the fan on. And I mean industrial strength fan. Blowing 20 steady and gusts closer to 30 for the rest of the round. I took my bag off the cart to take pic of it in 7 tee. Hoofer stand bag, blown over by the wind, no influence nothing. Not sure I have seen that before. I did bring 14 to it’s knees though. Driver 4 iron on green to just over 30 feet for my only other birdie. Alright enough babbling to the porn. Peter Hay par 3 under construction, I guess Tiger is part of it as he was on site yesterday.” Zipr, Nice round. I’ve spent a lot of time in Carmel over the last 11 years, but never got away from my family to play gold while there beside attempting the US Open and the Pro AM. My goal next year to get out and play a few rounds there. Popular Post THEZIPR23
84 6/14 fir 7/18 gir 34 putts. Well today was something. Perfect coastal day, no wind overcast 65*. Greens were still recovering from being punched so they were pretty bumpy. For those of you who haven’t gotten the pleasure of playing Spyglass, it’s a beast. And today that beast ate my putting stroke on the 3rd hole. I held it off for a little bit but it had lunch on my short game on the 8th. But it saved it’s best for the main course. It devoured my entire golf game on the 12th hole. I couldn’t find the club face for the rest of the round, entirely gone throughout my swing. 8 over on last 7. Still was an incredible weekend!! Kanoito
After a bad night sleep, my back was killing me. Couldn't turn, so my swing was all arms pulling shots. Popular Post cnosil
Overall I was pretty happy with yesterday’s round. 40/40:8011 FW3 GIR28 putts. I continue to drive the ball well and missed fairways are narrow misses. Hit my mid irons to linger clubs well. Approaches with Short irons were a bit of a struggle; 2 of my GIRs were with 6 irons. Since I didn’t hit many greens there was a lot of pressure on the short game. Chips and pitches were good; chunked a couple, overall contact was solid. Need to work on carry and rollout distances to have more realistic up and down opportunities. Popular Post MattF
I think I'm still feeling the effects of the mulching during the week. Shot another 93 yesterday. Driver continues to be off and on, but working on ball position is helping a lot. Even more so with the irons. I've been hitting them pretty solidly, up to a club longer just because of ball position, so there's that. cnosil, Rickp, StrokerAce and 9 others 12 Quote In the bag: Driver: Darkspeed X 9° UST Mamiya LIN-Q M40X Blue 7F4 Fairway: Apex UW 19° & 21° Project X HZRDUS Smoke RDX Black 5.5 Irons: JPX 923 HMP 5-PW UST Mamiya Recoil 95 F4 Wedges: T-22 Denim Copper 48°, 52° & 56° UST Mamiya Recoil 95 F4 Putter Sycamore 005 Wide Blade Bag: Fairway 14 stand bag Balls: Chrome Tour Cart: CaddyLite ONE Ver. 8 God Bless America, God save the King, God defend New Zealand and thank Christ for Australia! Kenny B
15 hours ago, silver & black said: I figure this is as good a place as any to put this. Have any of you seriously considered giving up this game? I am there right now. I have gone from a solid single digit to.... I have no idea. I can't hit a ball with anything.... driver, irons or wedges. Everything I hit is almost cut in half with the bottom of the club. This has gone on for at least the last 6 rounds I've played. This is not fun or enjoyable... at all. I have lost 30 lbs. over the Winter. I can't find a swing to save my life. The game I love has become something to despise/fear. I'm not sure how much longer I can keep going like this before I just quit. Have any of you ever been where I am? What did you do? How did you fix it? Sorry to hear that you are going through this, and yes, I was there. I'm sure we have all been there to some extent. Good job on losing 30 lbs. Did you work to do it, or did you lose it naturally over time? Probably better discussed in another thread, but since you asked... That change over the winter while you weren't playing on a daily basis certainly could have had an impact on your swing. Your flexibility has changed (for the better probably). Your rhythm and timing has changed, which can also affect your tempo. Yes, rhythm and tempo are different, and it doesn't take much to throw them off. If you had been playing while losing the weight, the effect would probably not be an issue. I know from reading your posts that you are a pretty strong guy, but the layoff and the weight loss probably affected your "golf strength" too. I see two options (but I'm not a professional, so take it for what it's worth): Have a good steak, eat lots of carbs, drink lots of beer, and gain the weight back so your swing matches your old body again, or Accept that your swing needs an overhaul, and put in the time to make it happen. Personally, while the first option has a lot of appeal, I would prefer to keep the 30 lbs off (I'm so envious) and accept the second option as a challenge. Don't quit, but don't play golf for awhile. IMO, you need to start with relearning your swing mechanics with your new body. It may be that you will need a lesson to get you started on the right track, but start with slow half swings to get the feel of how your body reacts, and get a feel for the club setting in the backswing and releasing in the followthrough. Hit a 7i less than 100 yards taking club to parallel on the backswing and parallel on the followthrough. Don't worry about where the ball goes; you are "feeling" the club again. Keep it up! If you go out and play while doing this, your recovery will take longer. As you become more proficient at this drill, take the club back until lead arm is parallel and repeat. As you get better, increase speed a little. If you get worse, go back a step. This is not something that you will fix overnight, so don't get discouraged. You have to retrain your body to make the correct moves again. The good news is this practice also will improve your short game pitches/chips. If you accept the challenge and put in the time, I'll bet that you will see a gain in distance with less stress on your body when you get your full swing back. You may even see better distance with half swings than with your old full swing. Give it a shot... if you love the game. I hope you get to a better point in golf and your life soon. Stick around... I enjoy your thoughts on this forum. cksurfdude, sirchunksalot, cnosil and 4 others 6 1 Quote “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
MrBandit
Played on Saturday with nice 88 degrees weather, perfect for walking(push cart), lets say that the range session before the round was ok, but the Front 9 was garbage. Worse putting , greens were fast but i couldn't adjust correctly. 46 in the front with 20 PUTTs. Ridiculous. Made the turn, and all of a sudden, drives were crisp, irons, wedges on point, Putting was back to normal, finish the back 9 at 38. with only 15 putts. Moral of the story , don't give up your round, it may come around the way you expected it to be. Now the trick is to remember everything that went right on the back 9 and repeat it next week.
