Double on the front 9, double on the back 9 .... 80

We all hate those doubles.

Since it rained 5” at Pebble Creek Wednesday and Thursday, I decided to play an older bag today, one with wider soles on the irons. My bag was made up of 10 year old Powerbilt Air Force One clubs. All went well on the front nine, started off with two doubles, then 5 straight pars, a bogey and a double....42. The back was a bit different. The fun started on #14 when I popped up my drive, then pulled out my 4 iron....well, the iron head flew further than the ball. That’s right, the shaft snapped when I struck the ball. I scored a double on that hole. Play continued until I was ready for my approach shot on 18....118 yds so I had a 9 iron in my hand and bent over to get the mud off my ball, and it happened again, the shaft snapped at the hosel! So I broke two shafts on the back nine. The shafts were Apollo 65 UL graphite.

BTW, I shot 42/47:89.

Guess I should replace the shafts on all of them.

Played like absolute poop today. Putter went cold and it just trickled down to the rest of my game. 4 three putts enroute to a 77. I have been working on my putting stroke the last six weeks about an hour a day with a short putter. May be time to see how it goes for a round.

No - shot 75 without a birdie - 3 bogeys on the front for 39. All pars on the back. Hit it really well on the back, had lots of great looks, also didn’t leave a single approach shot short of hole high.

Had a nice round today:  39/39 for a stress free 78 and no doubles!!  Also no birdies.  🙄

I wasn't catching my driver as well as I wanted, but drives were adequate.  I hit some great 3W shots from the fairway, and my iron approaches were better than usual (ball-striking practice at home).  Short game was fine until hole #15.  I started pressing to make a birdie and 3-putted #15 and 16.  Threw away a few shots on the back nine.  Overall, pleased though.

Tomorrow I will see if I can continue good play like DJ did today or fold like Spieth on weekends.  Stay tuned.

Played 18 at a new  to me course - nice, but not sure we'll go back... the routing was a little weird, play was slooow (5 hrs) and the finishing hole was not good .. a big departure visually and architecturally from every other hole and it looked and felt as if it had just been squeejed (technical term) into an otherwise unusable corner of the property that builders decided they couldn't place any houses on...

The deck outside the clubhouse sure was nice afterwards, though - good cold beer and wine and tasty food 🙂

Anyway, on the plus side I took along my old XR hybrid and am now wondering why I ever took it out of the bag!?!

And... my putting was on point! Was 2-putting everything .. including two 50 footers (one bounced off the flagstick!) .. dropped a few 1-putts (whoo hoo!) ... and ... ZERO 3-putts all afternoon! That's a first, and yeah I sure hope it continues!

Is this a testimonial for the EXPUTT??  😀

Very nice!!  Not 3-putting on a course you've never played before is a great accomplishment.

That's awesome the four of you got to meet up and play together. I bet both @GolfSpy Barbajo and @GolfSpy Stroker are fun playing partners. Looks like the 3 wood is still launching bombs! That's up there with my best drives. That's a beautiful course and I love the MGS logo ball.

There were very few good shots I could use but the 3W has some bombs but I also had really bad hooks today with it. Topped balls, chunked shots and something j wouldn’t call chipping, not sure what I would call it.
yes great company John and Jason were great to play with and it’s clear why MGS is great with mods and admins like them.

Could not get anything going yesterday. Seemed as if I was scrambling for par most of the time. Had like 5-6 eight footers for par but only could make  one of them. Putter was dead on line today but speed was just a little off. 41/41 for a 82. Not all that bad and was a great time with my buddies.

I walked 18 with my son yesterday at Windmill Hill in RI, it's a 9 hole executive course with the longest hole at 218. It was more of a teaching round, since there was no one behind us I let him play multiple balls just to practice and work on things. He gets very handsy on a lot of shots so we worked on that, especially with chipping and pitching. If you see the pic I posted in the Shot of the Day thread, I think my tips helped him a little bit 😄 He bombs it at the range but when we get on the course and he has to try and hit a target, he gets very tentative and slows down his downswing a lot so we worked on that too. Bottom line - when we walked off the course he said "that was a lot of fun, thanks Dad!" and that's what it's all about.

If you want to not worry about a lot of people on the course so you guys can relax and have fun, this is the place. $15 to walk 9 or $25 to walk 18.

That said, the par 3 course at Swansea CC just a few mins away from this course is $14 to walk 9 and is far better maintained. It's also busier, so there's that to consider.

Played at the ever frustrating Big Sugar here and started off with a birdie on the first hole (YAY), then proceeded to shoot +15 on the other 8 holes of the front nine lol. I reeled it back in with a +6 on the back nine.

My putting failed me all day after the first hole and my club selection was not the best decision making I've had in a while. I can't remember the last time I've four putted but I had a couple on the scorecard.

What. The. Eff.

Ha ha, yes in a roundabout way .. you caught me! 🤣 But, yes, it has helped with my lag putting - something I never really had a good way to practice before.

That's a great thing to coach him on, especially at a young enough age - I took up golf way too late and still don't trust my swing .. I still tense up and try to guide the ball to the target (which fails every time so you'd think I might learn something from that 😜🤪).

Played pretty decently, shot a 98. Ballstriking getting better, but had a few chunks and thin shots mixed in. That score includes an atrocious 8 on the par 4 10th hole.

Got out of all the bunkers in 1, but by getting out in 1, i mean the ball progresses forward like 2 feet outside of the bunker. Driving was the best part of my game today.

Hole of the day for me was hole 4. Hit a long drive down the right side of the fairway. Hit a high gap wedge that landed soft on the green. Of course I missed my 5 footer for birdie. Hit the tap in left handed for par.

Shot 42/43:85 today at Pebble Creek. Considering that yesterday I Broke two shafts(#4 & #9) with my Powerbilt irons. Today I gamed s full bag of Cobra F8’s, from the CCC2. Overall they played very well. Put an old Slotline (SSi 693)mid mallet putter in play today....course was very wet and played slow with greens slower than usual.

That's a great thing to coach him on, especially at a young enough age - I took up golf way too late and still don't trust my swing .. I still tense up and try to guide the ball to the target (which fails every time so you'd think I might learn something from that ).

I shy away from saying too much to him since I can barely play myself. But that’s something that his coach in PGA Jr had talked with him about so I’m ok giving him some gentle reminders when needed!

Hey any time I’m out of the trap in 1 shot I’m thrilled! 😄 Even if it’s only a foot or two out.

Me too. There was a time I could hit an actual functional bunker shot but then somehow that completely went away.

How do you like the Smart Sole S? I got fed up with my bunker shots so I ordered one.

I really like it, it’s pretty automatic once you get used to it. It’s definitely a one trick pony though so you have to accept that slot is taken up by a wedge that’s only good for one type of shot.

... If you learn the proper technique, getting out of a bunker is one of the easiest shots in golf. There is just so much room for error as you can hit 2" behind or 1/2" behind and you are still on the green. Now getting really good at it and alerting to fly it to the hole or run it up to the hole and getting it close is much tougher and just takes a ton of practice. But just getting it out is oh so easy once you truly understand how to play the shot. It is it's own unique "swing" and very different from any other swing but again, once you understand how to do it most are shocked at just how easy it is. The flip side is without proper technique, getting out of the sand can be hit or miss and very difficult, so I get it. Hang in there and learn how to hit it and you will be glad you did.

... This visual doesn't work for everyone, but it was one of the most successful with my students struggling to get out of the sand and understanding using the bounce:

Picture yourself in water about waist high. If you turn your hand so it is leaning back about 45* and smack your hand down into the water, the leading edge of your hand will go deeper into the water throwing some forward. This is how most players attack the sand. Now turn your hand so it is leaning forward about 45* and soak the water. Your hand will skim over the surface splashing much more water forward., Most of us did this as kids splashing our friends. This is the correct way to use the bounce then:

Spread your feet farther than normal, bend your knees more than normal and have your hands lower than normal. With your weight slightly on your front foot, simply cock your wrists quickly with no weight shift and then smack down and thru the sand with the very back of your wedge. the leading edge never touches the sand, just the trailing edge of the wedge. It is more of a lift and smack than an actual swing. But if you understand the hand 45* leaning forward splashing the water, you understand the trailing edge in the sand. Good luck!

Thanks for this. I think I am essentially slamming the leading edge into the sand and the ball goes nowhere. Will give what you mentioned above a shot.
