How'd you play?

Was supposed to play today, but only 2 of us showed up, so off we went in separate carts.  Nobody in front of us and we finished the front 9 in an hour.  I shot 40 (not taking time on putts mainly).  Went par, par, par when we finally caught up to the group in front of us.  They were incredibly slow and there were groups in front of them.  My playing partner and I jointly agreed to call it a day.  He drove back to #9 where he lives and I headed in to the clubhouse.

Man, my game is like night and day......Sunday I shot a 41/41:82 at Pebble Creek, then Tuesday I shot 48/49:97 at Plantation Palms, then today I shot 41/40:81 at Pebble Creek. Had 2 birdies and two penalties that ended up as doubles. I am bouncing around like a yo-yo!

Looks like you are most familiar with Pebble Creek.  Isn't that your home course?  That would be reasonable.

What is the status of Pebble Creek?  Didn't you say It was closing?

Thanks KennyB, Pebble Creek is still for sale but there are no takers. The last group of developers said it would require several million dollars just to bring in dirt fill to bring the base up to where surrounding houses are. Not to mention, they must maintain the drainage as Pebble Creek drains into another large creek system. That said, I have been playing both courses weekly so I am familiar with both....just seems that PP is more difficult.

mixed bag today. shot a 96 overall, which is pretty much where i usually end up.

my swing coach/fitter put a cobra driver together for me during my last lesson that he let me take and try out. we’ve been working on contact point and closing the club face.

the result was 3 great tee shots. two with the driver and one with my driving iron.

irons/approach shots were terrible

as usual, chipping and wedge play saved my ass

- 39 (+3)
- 5/8 FIR
- 6/9 GIR (1 birdie)
- 18 Putts (2 3-putts, 5 2-putts, 2 1-putts)

Rainy, dreary day today with no sun and a high temperature only around 50. Figured the course was pretty empty and it was, so I hopped off the back nine and slid between the few groups that were out today and avoided any heavy rain.

This was probably the first round all season immediately post-lesson that I played pretty well. Hit a lot of greens (Nos. 12-17), and just missed hitting No. 18 by about a yard long (notched a chip-and-down for par). Didn't hit the ball exceptionally far since I was bundled up, but I hit my targets and didn't kill my score with bad shots off the tee.

I just unfortunately went bogey-bogey to open the nine and then had back-to-back three putts for bogey on 15 and 16 because I was 60+ feet away on the green with my approaches.

40/40 today.   #4 is a par 3 with a creek running on the right side on a downward slope.  I pushed my 7 iron right, hit the hillside over the trap and watched it bounce right in the creek.  It's a lateral drop there.  Pitched up a bit long and missed the putt.  And THAT is how you make double!  😄

My wife and I drove down to Corvallis OR (300 mile trip) on Tuesday to see my dad.  He will be 90 next month and has been in COVID locked down for 7 months, so we haven't been able to visit.  We could only sit with him outside for 45 minutes on Tuesday afternoon, then again on Wednesday afternoon for 45 minutes.  They schedule visits for residents every hour, then clean the chairs for the next visit.

So, Wednesday morning with nothing to do, we got the 1st tee time at 8:00am at Spring Hill GC in Albany, OR.  This course used to be private but is now semi-private.  For many years I have driven by the course wishing I could play it.  A few holes front a highway that went to Albany from my mom and dad's house.  This is a lovely course!!  I think it was built in 1960 and has hosted the Oregon Open a few times.  It's not a long course at 6500y from the tips; par 72, rating 71.7 and slope 129.  I played the White tees at 5960y; 68.9/124.  Never been on the course before; shot 42/37 = 79 with one birdie and NO doubles or worse!!.  I was very happy with that score since I was in 5 bunkers that were very firm, wet sand; nothing like sand at my course.  My wife shot a very decent 88, and had two good bunker shots as well..

Although the grass was very wet, there were no puddles.  The course had been plugged and sanded recently, and there was a little sand on the greens, but they rolled quite nicely.  If I lived in the area, I would join this club AND the price is very reasonable IMO.

Some photos:

The chipping green hadn't been mowed yet this morning!!

Hole #9 looking at the clubhouse... YES, that's the clubhouse!!

I was in a groove on the back nine.  Here's something I can NOT do at my course...  back up the ball on a green!!  Normally, my ball lands on a green, maybe make a slight dent, then roll forward.  Not here!!  At my course this ball would have been next to the hole... but probably in the cup!  😁

The view afterwards, sitting on the patio having a couple beers.  #18 green on the right; #9 green on the left, and out of the photo on the left you can watch people playing their 2nd shot all the way to the #1 green.

IMG_5345.jpeg.c9789e76f24c2e39fec4bf6c520bdff3.jpeg

That is a beautiful course, and that clubhouse...wow. I love that picture of the chipping green, whoever took it did a great job between the patterns on it and the sunlight filtering through the trees.

I'm glad you were able to spend time with your dad after all that time of him being in lockdown. That's awesome!

I finally had a decent round at my course today although I still didn't drive the ball very well.  I scrambled around for a +3/+3 round of 78.  Chipping and putting were working better now that the greens have returned to their normal speed after aerating and sanding.  One double on #11 and no birdies, but I had two sandy pars.

One of those days you want to forget, 🙄

My Saturday league played a game for the first time today, called Quota. Fun game that I would've enjoyed even more if I played worth a damn... For those of you not familiar with it, you subtract the number of strokes you get from 36. In my case that was 11 today which meant I needed to make 25 points to reach my quota. You go off your GROSS score on each hole, birdie 3 pts, par 2, bogey 1, double -1. It's a tough game, and I made it harder by really struggling again today with my irons.

I'm dying to put my new PXG 0211's in the bag, but I thought it best to wait a couple more weeks as the next couple of Tuesdays we playoff for my Club Men's League Championship. The way I was hitting the old ones today though, maybe I should've used a right handed set. What makes it so confounding is all the other parts of my game are really sharp. I'm driving it well, my putting and wedge game are as good as can be for a player like me. I just can't hit a quality second shot.

Between lost balls in water, trees, and even the rough(???), two unplayable plugged lies, it was a double bogey fest. Not sure what my actual score would've been, probably around 90-92.  I only made 6 pars and a bunch of bogeys. I also picked up after double a bunch of times because of the format.

Played my second round at a local course, hit the ball super solid (again!). My putting let me down a bit again today. Something about the greens just throws me off, cuz I was starting them on-line really well, just a lot of missed reads. Between a lot of missed putts, and 2 blow up holes, I felt like I played way better than the score suggested. Ended the round on a birdie though!

70

7/14 fir

13/18 gir

29 putts

Hit the driver great again, of the fairways I missed all but 1 were less the 2 yards into rough. Greens are 12 days past plugged so putting was not good. Made 1 18 footer on 9 for birdie, other 3 birds were inside of 4 feet, and missed 2 more inside of 5. Pretty solid overall.

Practice round at Poppy Hills today, then Monday and Tuesday NCGA Mid-AM 4 ball. First day Poppy and second day Del Monte. Feel good about where my game is at. Hopefully can get some putts to drop and get on a run.

Played like crap on the front 9, especially the first few holes. Lost like 4 balls on the front 9, not good.

On the last few holes of the front 9, and then on the back 9, i turned it around and found my swing. I now have a good idea of the feel I need to feel to make a good swing.

On the back 9, made a 24 foot putt and almost made a 50 foot putt (3 inches short). Back 9 score was 48, but should have been lower, had a blowup hole with an 8.
