How'd you play?

I lied a few weeks ago when I said I was done playing for the year. Cold weather moves back in tonight, so I thought I'd take advantage of the break to get another 27 holes in. Nice playing in shorts on Nov. 10!

I went back to one of the "new-to-me" courses I played for the Cobra Connect Arccos Caddie challenge. I really enjoyed the course when I went for the first time, and they were on late fall rates at $25 for 18 with cart. They did just recently punch and sand the greens (most others in the area did it over two months ago now), but they rolled pretty true so it wasn't a big issue.

Battled a 15-25 MPH southwest wind all day and am ecstatic with how the season finished up.

Opening 18

- 41/40 = 81 (+10)
- 7/14 FIR
- 6/18 GIR (1 birdie)
- 31 Putts (2 3-putts, 9 2-putts, 7 1-putts)

Second 9 (Front)

- 38 (+2)
- 4/7 FIR
- 4/9 GIR
- 15 Putts (6 2-putts, 3 1-putts)

Putter was on fire all day, as was the short game. Lots of chip and downs. Took three holes to get going (started bogey-bogey-bogey) without having any range balls beforehand as I haven't hit a ton of balls lately.

Played only one really bad hole all day. Sitting 115 out on No. 6 during my first round, I tried to hit a flighted gap wedge under the wind and ended up pulling it left into the green side bunker, from which I just couldn't get out. Three shots later, I two-putted for a disappointing double. Couple other bad shots here and there, but thankfully recovered pretty well from all of them.

I was able to sneak in another nine and played really well, leaving a couple birdie and par putts literally less than four inches short. A little more gas and I'd have flirted with par or even perhaps one-under.

I mentioned the wind. I hit an absolutely crazy 9 iron from the fairway on one of the par 5s that rode a nice breeze 🤣. Almost hit the layup too far into the pond guarding the green.

Well for what may be the last round of the year in warm weather for me I had one hell of a first. First time I have made three eagles in one round and not one came via a holed putt. Started on the back 9 with a terrible bogey on a 100 yard par three. Get to 11 and hit my drive up the right hand side leaving me 178 yards into a 455 yard par 4. Absolute pure 7 iron that landed 8 feet right of the pin and kicked sideways for a deuce. Made pars until 15. Pounded driver up the right center and then dunked a PW from 143 yards for my second eagle on the side. Made bogey on 18 to turn at 3 under. Made birdie on 3 and then went driver, 3 wood, pitch in on the par 5 4th for my third eagle of the day. Ended with 67 thanks to a sloppy bogeys on 8 and 9.

That's an awesome day, really.

46 on the front 9...i seem to be really stuck on that number. i’ve been at 46 at the turn for a bunch of rounds lately.

Solid numbers to slowly close out the season. What time are you losing sun? We are almost before 5 here 🤦‍♂️

Was lucky to play both courses at Trophy Club in Roanoke, TX last week.  They're called "Whitworth" and "Hogan".  Ms. Whitworth did not design the course named for her, I believe Arthur Hills did the work, but Mr. Hogan himself designed the "Hogan" course, the only design he ever performed.  I didn't play great, but certainly enjoyed the courses!

Not a good day. Back up in triple digits for the first time all year. Just a muddy, wet day that would have gone better if I just put the damn driver away earlier than I did. I told my buddy to force me to put it away after 3 holes if I wasn't driving well. He didn't listen, so I blame him! Used my 3w off the tee on the back 9 and shot nearly 10 better. And that's with a blowup SEVEN on a par 3.

Really wasn't happy with some of the other golfers out there today. Lots of veering off into other holes and fairways, balls landing near us with no FORE shouts. I absolutely s-worded a tee shot on a par 5 when a walker just decided to come strolling out of the trees and walking towards us as I was starting my downswing. Come on, man.

Played an Executive 9 (short 1668 yd, Par 31) with an old friend yesterday, on what may be the last spring-like Fall day here in NY. My game was a mix of literally alternating good and bad holes - pars / "almost par" bogeys vs doubles / triples.

This course presents challenges off the tee, and that's where I made the most mistakes... Only hit 3/9 tee shots "well" and not into trouble; with one of those good ones on an uphill 150-ish yard Par 3 where I ended up on the back fringe and not in or near the front-right bunker like I typically am on that hole.

OTOH wedges seemed to be working well as I hit the green or the fringe on 6/9 attempts; and had one very exciting for me bunker shot - had thinned my 9i on the closing Par 3 and ended up not only in the deep enough to be over my head front bunker but the front face was steep enough that sand had fallen away and there was several inches of vertical lip hanging down that my ball was less than a foot from - took a firm grip on the lob wedge and jammed it down into the sand right on the back edge of the ball .. ball popped up and out and headed straight ahead towards the pin ..whoo-hoo!

And as a follow-up to that nice bunker shot... yep, I slightly pulled the uphill 7 footer and missed a great par save/up & down chance by an inch...

Putting generally was just ok; not terrible but not great. I expect to 3-putt a few times at this course as most greens are very contoured, and my approach game is nowhere near the point of hitting the "right quadrant" of a green, plus yesterday the greens were extra fast after a bunch of warm and dry weather. Had 2 x 3-putts and 1 (ouch) 4-putt; no 1-putts even though I had several opportunities.

Overall, even if it doesn't sound like it, I feel like I'm making progress in my game and .. after the tee shots .. actually played reasonably solidly. Hopefully there'll be some more mild days around here through the Fall and Winter!

Our regular Wednesday game today.  Started off less than stellar, shooting a 42 on the front.  Turned it around to close out with an 80.  No birdies, 2 doubles.  Greens were very fast today and the pins were in some really tough positions that led to missed putts rolling out far more than usual.  I didn't have near the issues that my playing partners did, thankfully.

Still working on my swing change and had some timing issues that led to some pretty ugly shots.  Also hit some really nice ones, though.   Met with my swing coach after the round and he pointed out a couple of things in my setup that he wanted me to focus on.

My game left me for most of the round, but the weather was great and the company was even better. Thank you @MyWifesSwingCoach Matt for the great outing, BTW, my phone says we walked 5 miles for the round #buildingCalvesLikePhill's.

First day back in 3 months to the week!  My wife was off of work today for the Holiday (Happy Veteran's Day Vets!) and my daughter was taking a nap so I said why not try 9?

It started out mediocre as I would expect.  Par, Bogey, Double and then I settled in.  Finished -2 and missed a 6 and 8 footer for birdie on 8 & 9 to finish 37 +1.

I feel so relieved that this herniated disc is not going to be the death of me and my game.  Hanging up the clubs for the season on a high note.

That's good playing.   Good to see you have recovered.  Bad backs are really tough.

Keep the motor running, swing easy, work on the game however you can in the winter.   Only five months to go.

I’m getting spine surgery Monday, and got out for a final 18 hole round yesterday. Managed an 86, with a few too many doubles. Next 18 hole round...at least six weeks away 😩

Anytime, I just need to get my hamstrings a little more stretched out, or we take carts.

Good luck with the surgery.  My wife had L5-S1 fusion 12 years ago, and it did wonders for her golf game.  So, we all expect low rounds next spring.

I expect that's what I'll eventually have to do because of my degenerative disc disease in that same spot.
