Popular Post Shapotomous
I had a solid round last evening, 14 pars, 1 bird, 2 bogeys and a double for a 75. The lost shots were solid hits with yardage mistakes rather than bad mis-hits so I didn't feel too bad about those. 32 putts on the still recovering bumpy greens as I finally was hitting the ball hard enough to get to the hole. It played shorter as I didn't play from the tips since the league starts this week and I wanted to get my clubs down from the white tees. Only 4 drivers on the front and quite a few wedges into the greens. Allergy season starts for me sometime in May, when the temps get into the high 90's and runs into Sept with the peak around early August when it's 100-110º. I have the opposite problem. My eyes don't tear up; they are dry and itchy. I have to add drops all the time. I don't have that problem when I leave this area. It's even better in hot, dry places like AZ or Palm Springs. Popular Post cksurfdude
So I had an interesting round that .. maybe? (hopefully!) .. will fulfill the pattern of "one step forward and two steps back" ... Started out well with a solid tee shot into a good position on a visually daunting hole, then a good enough short second to hit the front of the green and a two putt par. Second hole a not-solid tee shot but into a good enough position followed by a thinned and faded second that juuuust stopped on the back edge of the back fringe of the green .. ran the first putt up and over the intervening ridge and then way past the hole downhill and onto the opposite fringe ... Starting to notice a pattern quickly developing here..? 3-putt bogey there; then #3 is a challenging Par 3 playing about 144 into a breeze. Did hit the shot solidly enough but maybe could've used one more club .. ball hung up a bit in the wind and came down juuuust on the green side of the deep bunker, but left me a fairly straightforward chip on which I managed to pull left a little, leaving me in a not so great spot to putt from but managed to get it reasonably close and did make the second one for another bogey. The rest of the round was a bunch of topped tee shots followed by what I'll call "serviceable" shots to get back into position. The day's "fun" hole was a long Par 5 that runs through a valley with pretty steep and high sides on both sides. Sliced my tee shot off to the right, found it in a flat spot on the top of the ridge and clear of the trees; faded the second off to the right onto a steep what will soon become fescue-covered hill; got an 8i on it and got the ball to a few yards short of the front of the green - which led the first time I set foot on the fairway on that long Par 5 hole!!! Made bogey after blading the first chip-on attempt off the back of the green..... Not sure and there's absolutely *no* reason why but I see to be carrying a lot of tension on the course... It was a nice day, pleasant temps, just my wife and I and no one behind us pushing us, etc. (..ya gotta get it together dude and just "swing your swing" ...) Unless you have poor technique, there really is no reason to blade or fat a chip. (into sticky Bermuda the exception) It is an easy shot. Not easy to get close of course, but easy to execute and get somewhere round the hole in a 6-10 foot circle. Almost always the problem is concentrating on the result and not the process. Once you focus on the result, it is pretty easy to botch the process by lifting your head and looking up, dipping your knees, yanking the clubhead into the ball and just experiencing a timing/rhythm issue. ... OTOH just concentrating on making a smooth chipping stroke and good contact always gets you on the green and in the circle. There really is no need to look up to see how close you got the chip because you have plenty of time as the ball isn't going into the woods/water/bushes, so make sure you maintain your posture and then swivel your head to see your results. For some (many?) this means looking at you contact point and keeping your eyes down for a good 2-3 seconds to train yourself to not look or rise up at impact. Your job is to make solid contact with a consistent stroke, not get the ball close to the hole. If you do that you can kiss bladed chips good bye forever. That was most likely what I did - look up too soon, in addition to not setting myself up well enough on the upslope I was standing on. And yes - my primary goal at this point .. that I probably should repeat to myself as I'm setting up .. is to get it up and onto the green (somewhere, anywhere). chisag
... Instead of the lesson folder I am posting this here since so many have problems on the green. For those of you struggling with your putter, here is a great drill. I have always believed a true pendulum technique gives you the best opportunity to have a repetitive putting stroke. Swing the putter back and forward at the same pace. To help in not accelerating the putter head to start the forward stroke, balance a dime on your putter flange and take your normal putting stroke. If the dime falls off you are starting the stroke with too much acceleration and distance control will always be a problem. If you can take a smooth stroke back and forth at the same speed, the dime will stay on the putters flange. Even those with a pop stroke can benefit from the drill as the dime should fall off closer to impact instead of the start of the forward swing. You can even do this with a 40 footer if you take a longer back swing. Really helps with your rhythm! sirchunksalot, downlowkey, Micah T and 4 others 6 1 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... Popular Post MyWifesSwingCoach
Yesterday was probably the greatest round I have ever had, I beat my best round of 76 with a 73. I drove the green on 2 with a 325yd bomb and two putted for birdie, bogeyed the par 3 3rd due to an under hit sand shot, another birdie came from the par 5 542yd 10th after another 300+yd drive with a 9i and two putt, the double on 16 had me pretty disappointed but was able to recover with a birdie on 18... Popular Post juspoole
Feels good to be able to post something here. Not quite a full round, but managed to play 7 holes yesterday, would have played 9, but we had 4 foursomes in front of our twosome and I only had limited time from the start. I thought 1 hr 45 min on a Monday would have been enough, but I was wrong. First drive of the year into wind and push-slice on the road OB. Managed ok after that and hit a good shot to par 3 second, but another hazard on the drive on the third gave me a rough start of +4 through 3 holes. Luckily managed even through the rest with a birdie on the 7th hole and one other bogey. Not great, but take away two bad drives and I'm probably even. Also, was playing with a buddy that I am trying to help his game so was concentrating more on his ball than my own. Didn't hurt me that bad, except I really rushed the putting routine. I had about 3 good looks at birdie and 1 for eagle (hole I did actually biridie) and only one glanced the hole. Was very happy with my contact with irons and my pitching through the day. Tee shots have to tighten up, but the last two drives were much better, I caught one about 340 downwind on the 6th hole. And on the par 5 7th, I hit another nice drive about 315 slightly into wind and had 185 left that I put to around 8 feet for eagle. Popular Post StrokerAce
Felt like I played well but my score doesn't quite reflect it. There were small patches of snow on the first couple holes but then it cleared out. Always feels good to start with a par. 90* cart path only. Absolutely despise this but course was wet so I get it. 17th hole - nice drive, grab 7/8/9, need to carry pond on 2nd shot. Got the wrong clubs; do I go back across fw to cart? Nah... grab what I thought was a choked down 9, hit a great shot, just flushed it perfectly. And it kept going. WTF? Look at the club - 7i, not 9i. That hurt; would have been on the green with 2 putts for par. Another reason to hate CPO! Had 10 GIRs and not a single birdie. 3 penalty strokes from poor club selection. Popular Post null
Shot one of the Best 80s (+8) of my life. Played at noon and the front nine was punched yesterday and the back nine was punched this morning. Greens were a sandy bumpy mess. Top that off with 25mph wind gusts and conditions weren’t meant for scoring Despite that I was absolutely destroying the driver off the tee and flushing iron shots. My stock 5 iron normally carries just about 200 yards. On a hole going into the wind I absolutely obliterated a drive and it left me 176 yards in. Flushed the 5 iron and the wind killed it perfectly and I landed 20 feet from the flag. The next hole was a Par 3 playing down wind with the pin in the back at 218 yards. I pulled 5 iron again, flushed it, and carried the green. Some serious wind gusts! NRJyzr, cnosil, edingc and 9 others 11
Popular Post Shapotomous
First round for league play this evening & I was late getting away from the office and rushed to get there just before it started. First hole was a triple after an OB drive, steadied myself with a par and then doubled the next one....so after 3 holes I am 5 over and was down 2 points to 1. I kept from getting too mad at myself and focused on 1 shot at a time. I won 5 of the next 6 holes and had 3 birdies along the way to finish with a 39. Popular Post cksurfdude
OK.. some signs of forward progress are starting to show again.. You know that rare day when you nail every tee shot? Well today was not that day But .. uhhh .. had some good second shots, and most of my attempts to hit greens made it on .. and got a few of those pretty close, too Chipping/pitching was mostly good, and putting speed was mostly on although my line was just a little off several times. So today's fun hole was a Par 5 .. and I guess this qualifies for the PATTS thread .. a thin tee shot which I pushed to the right instead of getting to the left side of the fairway .. ball ended up on the upslope on the front side of a very deep (so-called) fairway bunker .. was able to get the 7W on the ball and caught it solidly, sent it well down the left side into a good position.. ..105 yds out, wind from behind, green sloping up towards the back .. no problem, right? Perfect distance, buuuut .. pulled it left .. found the ball about 10-12 feet up on the side of a very steep hill (soon to be covered in tall fescue grass) and nestled up against a nice little clump of fescue.. ..somehow manage to slide the 60 degree cleanly under the ball .. watched it pop up and go online towards my landing spot .. where it took the slope and rolled to the hole stopping just a few inches short! Popular Post MaxEntropy
Much of my focus this season has been on maintaining a faster backswing with a driver and mellower tempo with everything else. I think I overdid the fast backswing last week and struggled to make solid contact. This week I backed off a bit with pretty good results. Ended up shooting 43 (+8) but was pretty happy about it given the conditions - it was 42 degrees when we teed off and 36 when we finished. Just like two weeks ago, only one really bad driver swing, but it came (as it always seems to) on the one hole where it can't - dense woods on the right. Beyond that, irons were pretty good, short game decent although I could not make a putt - I burned the edges all evening and ended up with 18 putts, where I'm normally in the 14-16 range. In other news, I now have three rounds with my new Zipcore wedges. I love them. I used to play 56* and 60* and have shifted to 54* and 58*, so that has taken some adjustment. I'm primarily using the 58* around the green and am getting pretty good at predicting the spin/rollout based on the lie. I'm using 54* for the 20-80 yard shots. I'm getting excellent bite on those kind of shots and have adapted to the distance of partial swings pretty quickly. Other than at the range, I have not taken a full swing with either club. I'm still more comfortable with a partial/choked-down GW for the 80-100 yard shots. At check in they rattled off the list of restrictions due to all the rain so I canceled.Saw the Ranger in cart parking who is a friend of mine and he said smart move canceling water was bad.Putted a little bit on practice green and that was pretty damp. Popular Post CarlH
Shot an 80 today. Greens were just punched and heavily sanded, so we were a bit generous with putts given. However, I can honestly say that I didn't pick up any long putts and most were tap in or slightly more. The chips sure did react funny however. Thought I hit some good ones only to watch them react totally different than expected. I did work on the rotation that I worked on with my swing coach with moderate success on most of my iron shots, but not so much with the driver. I continue to struggle with that one. More practice time needed to hone the lessons!!!!!! edingc, Rickp, Shapotomous and 10 others 13 Quote Driver: Rogue ST Max (10.5* set at -1 and neutral) -- Mitsubishi Tensai Blue 55g R shaft Fairway: Rogue ST Max 3 wood (16.5*) and Heaven Wood (20*)-- Tensai Blue 55g R shaft Hybrids: Rogue ST Max 5H (23*)--Tensai Blue 55g R shaft Irons: Apex CF19 6-9, PW, AW -- KBS Tour Graphite TGI 70 shafts R +1/2 inch 3* upright Wedges: Edison 53* and 57* KBS PGI 80 Graphite +1/2 inch 2* upright Putter: L.A.B. Popular Post benb1989
Played Hayling Golf club on Hayling Island, Hampshire, England. Was the first proper links golf course I have played. The sun was shining but the wind was blowing. The greens were hard and fast which took some getting used to and there was a lot of blind tee shots. Driving was shocking for the first few holes but I was lucky each time and found my ball and was able to play it. It was pointed out to me I was swinging the driver a lot slower than normal. I think I was trying to "guide" the ball and wasn't committing to the shot. Once I realised this my driving improved. I was happy with the rest of my game, and my short game and putting was better than it normally is which I was pleased with. Playing a proper links course is an experience but one I enjoyed. You have to think about every shot you make and even when you think you've left yourself an easy shot, its not. With the slopes, firmness and speed of the greens theres not much margin for error at all. Looking forward to playing some more links courses. Popular Post JoshDay
Played at Sequoia Woods County Club for the first time since the snow completely lifted. Course was beautiful, but the greens were recently aerated. They were sandy and a little hairy, but it was a great day. Had some struggles off the tee, but played to my handicap, enjoyed the beauty, and am ready to head back up ASAP. sirchunksalot, cksurfdude, Rickp and 8 others 11 Quote 10.5 Epic Flash TM 3 Wood Titleist 20* 5 Wood Apex Pro Irons 58 TM and 60 Callaway degree wedges Odyssey Sabertooth Putter

CarlH
Went out with a friend for a quick 9 hole practice round. Hit the ball better today, making good move on the ball with better rotation and balance. Greens were just punched and sanded yesterday and there was heavy sand, some of it wet, on the greens. Birdied the last hole (par 5). My putt was on my intended line, but may not have had the break I expected due to the heavy sand, when it hit a clod of dirt and kicked an inch to the right and center cut the hole. We had an unofficial game of skins with carry overs between us....my birdie on the closing hole gave me a clean sweep of all 9 holes. Popular Post Grand Stranded
After 7 long, frustrating weeks of dealing with back pain....I FINALLY GOT TO PLAY A ROUND OF GOLF!!!!!!!! God, it felt good to get out there again! I shocked myself by hitting a perfect drive off the first tee, and put together a great front nine on the Dye which is the hardest of the 4 courses in Barefoot. Even though I struggled with my irons, everything else was so good I managed to shoot 40, which shocked the hell out of me. The back 9 was a different story as I had 3 doubles, two of which came on what were probably my best drives of the day. The third one was just a short game meltdown. (note to @CarlH as the song goes, I can do anything, you can do... yes I can”) Anyway I finished with 45 on the back for an 85, and even though the irons never came around, I couldn’t get upset over anything today..... Damn it was SO good to play again!!!!!! pulledabill
I think lessons are starting to improve my game after some very dismal rounds. Shot a 99 last week. ouch!! Multiple 3 putts and probably 6 penalties off the tee Last night was a 46 with lots of good in it and today was a 44, 40. 42. Just finding small victories to build on. The bad was putting on 1st 9 and a 6 on a par 3 thanks to bad bunker play. Chipping and pitching was off and left too many much too short. Ive been working on solving my outside in swing plane that short game has been getting zero attention. The good is that Im finding fairways and my iron play has got so much better. No longer taking huge pelts with a bad swing plane. Swing is so much more effortless and smooth with a good tempo. Staying the course of lessons and willing to take my lumps.
