Overall played a bit worse than my handicap (had too many blow up holes for no reason and made simple errors) but I didn't lose any balls (always a plus to walk away from the course with the same number of balls you walked in with or better! picked up a TM TP5X that looks like it was hit once!) but I was hitting the drives of my life. I have hit drives to these distances before but on downhill tee shots with lots of wind in the back. This course is flat as a table top and there was barely a breeze blowing yesterday. Just look at the google maps 3D view. So I know I have been getting more ball speed and better distances by looking at my launch monitor stats on the range. Here is a comparison of my best shots from 2 months ago to 2 days ago. For sure averages are best but I know that the shots I hit yesterday were some of my best. I attribute this to 3 things. I started using an overspeed and release timing trainer called Golf Slingshot and I changed from a used off the rack Callaway Rogue SZ driver to a fitted Taylormade SIM2 Max D driver all about 2 months ago. I also fixed my swing so that I would sway much less in the backswing and get more proper rotation. Top is me now, bottom is about 2 months ago. Also not sure if it made a difference but I switched from my 2019 TM TP5 to a 2021 Titleist ProV1X. Just testing the ball out as I won 5 dozen in a contest and if this is the average result I may be switching balls. Ok so now what everyone has been waiting for. What drives did I actually hit yesterday? That last one I was doing the math after hitting my second shot. "Hmm my watch had 570 from the tee to middle of the green...huh? I had 260 left for my second shot...did I just hit a 310 yard drive? I need to check my shotscope as soon as I get home!" For reference here is a google maps 3D image of the view of the hole from behind the tee. The red circle is the tee and the red line is a palm tree. My shot went just right of the palm tree with a perfect high draw and landed in the middle of the fairway. My other drives went about 240-250 (which is still better than my averages of 230 in the past) but I just could not convert on my approaches. Kept overdrawing the ball and missing greens left. Sorry for the long post but I just had to share my experience yesterday and to tell everyone else out there struggling with driver distance that there is hope! First legitimate 300 yard drive over flat terrain for an average golfer like me with an average build (5'8" 180 lbs...but I do have strong lower body due to my time in the Marine Corps) Get fit (for your driver but also physically fit helps too i guess!) and get into an overspeed training regimen. Again if anyone reading this is interested in the golf slingshot please DM me and I can tell you more about it. (Disclaimer, I do get some kickback as an affiliate but I really think this has helped me gain speed and better release as well) That's great progress right there. I also agree that speed training can lead to some great gains. I have gained speed this year and this has ben great and fun as I am sure you agree. juspoole
Played a few holes today - thought I had more time, but my 2.5 year old wasn't feeling well so I had to leave early and go pick him up from the sitter. The holes I did play were very positive. Did not hit a fairway, but had a consistent ball flight and miss and just was off to the left most of the time (fade for me). I had a chip in on a difficult par 3 for birdie and 2 great par saves from 8 feet. Overall through 7 holes, I was even par. sp0rtsfan86
Played two nines and neither were good or bad. Played the front both times shot 47 from the blues but had a lot of errors and couldn't hit an iron. Tuesday was league night and position night. My partner started the round off by hitting his first 10 yards... directly into the lake. I fought the driver and irons for the first few holes but my putting saved the day. Three weeks ago I had zero confidence in the putter but now I feel like everything is going to go in from inside of 6-7 feet. Other than a pulled putt on 9 with the match won, I didn't miss a single one inside of 5 foot and was hitting lags very close. Ended up with a 44 after taking a 7 on the 6th. Really starting to gain confidence now that putting is on the way back. Once my short game comes around I think I'll be back down to around a 12 handicap. Popular Post Grand Stranded
So tomorrow is going to feel like Opening Day of my golf season! I can’t believe it’s the end of May and I don’t even have 10 rounds in... I’m usually over 40 by now. All systems are go right now however. My back is feeling really good again, and my daughter’s wedding was last weekend so I’m not afraid of tweaking it while playing. I’m playing a course named Rock Hill tomorrow ( @cksurfdude any scouting report available?) but I’m really looking forward to Saturday... we’re playing Tam O’Shanter, which until this season was a very exclusive private club that is now open to the public until the land is developed into a bunch of McMansions. I was amazed at the number of old, big money private clubs that are closing up here, although the way the real estate market is booming, I shouldn’t be. One of the things I constantly hear is how fellow players love my swing and tempo wondering how I hit it so far swinging so smoothly. "so far" is extremely relative as I probably carry my driver in the 225-235 range. So while others are admiring my tempo I have always wanted to increase it and swing faster and would love to increase my carry to a modest 250. I have lost some distance as my swing has shortened over the years, especially once I reached my mid 60's so an obvious fix would simply be swinging faster. ncwoz
Played an outstanding round of league tonight! FIR: 3/6 GIR: 7/9 Putts: 18 Had one birdie, one bogey and one double - the really only "bad" shot of the day for me was on the double. Chunky tee shot left me in front of a tree, so I was going to just punch a 4 iron under some branches and get me a short pitch onto the green...I hit the trunk and bounced it in the water haha. But just a super super solid round otherwise. Arccos had me at a +5 HCP for my approach game, which is by far a best for me. Just feel really good standing over the ball the last few rounds! Can't complain about that! bens197, cnosil, CarlH and 6 others 8 1 Quote Right Handed Driver: 9° Speedzone (HZRDUS Smoke Green 70g X-Stiff shaft) 2 Hybrid: 18° Exotics EXS Pro (Evenflow Black 6.5) (2020 MGS Official Review here) 3/Driving Iron: 18° UiHi Iron (MMT Utility TX 105g shaft) Irons: 4-GW T100 irons (Nippon Modus 120 X-Stiff shafts) (2021 MGS Official Review here) Wedges: 54° & 58° TSW Forged (Dynamic Gold S300) Putter: ER2B (2019 MGS Official Review here) Ball: MAXFLI Tour X Bag: Hoofer Lite WITB thread here
Alf. S
Played in the Senior League Betterball Matchplay for the club yesterday. Set the scene, my partner and I are 3 for 3 win wise but all the games have been close and we have had to play well to win with matches going down to 17 and 18. This is the 1st season we have been using the WHS handicap system. I'm playing of 4.9 and partner 11.7, the maximum competitor handicap is 20. Prior to WHS, anyone off 20 would be 75% of the difference in betterball which would be ((20-5)*75%) 12 strokes with me off scratch. new rules are that you use the Course Handicap so I get 5, but off a slope of 123 20 go up to 23 and it is now 90% difference. So I was giving 16 strokes to 2 guys who never missed a fairway and betterball net were the best part of 8 under. Started really well and was -3 gross thru 1st 5 but only 1 up. On the 4th, holed my birdie 3 and walked off the green while the other team were putting for their pars and announced we were one up, they nearly had a coronary. "But we're stroking" I pointed out this was only 1 of 2 holes they didn't stroke on. Next hole put my approach to 3 feet, old boy rolls in a 15 footer for par and turns round to say "you'll have that for a half". I wasn't driving well at that time with me cutting the ball but not getting into much trouble, sorted things out on the 6th, setup for the cut and hit it up the left side behind trees, 7th big drive ran out of fairway behind trees. So went one down in quick succession. Played steady on the back nine, 2 over for the 5 holes Eventually we got beat 5 and 3, with net birdies on 4 off the 5 holes. Didn't even win their non stroking hole, par just not good enough! Enjoyed the course didn't much like the thumping. Curtis Atkinson
Been a while since I've posted here but have been able to play a decent amount. Hitting about the 6 month mark of being able to play consistently and progress has slowed as the bigger jumps in score have ceased, which is to be expected. Shot a 93 which was an overall pretty solid round. Experimented with trying to aim for the widest miss, especially off the tee, no matter the club and turned out pretty well. Great example is this hole that is my nemesis. Short par-4 that's just a slow, steady dogleg left with trees all down the right that doesn't fit my shot shape at all. It's the 3rd easiest hole on the course but the one I play the least. Swallowed a ton of pride and hit a 7 iron off the tee into the middle of the fairway, then another 7 in, two putted for par. TBT
Got a quick round in early this morning in between rounds of thunderstorms (damn I hate cart path only golf!) The course was really wet after several days of rain so I wasn’t getting any roll out at all.. The only good news with that as you could really go at flags because the ball was sticking on all the greens. I’ve really been struggling with getting the club stuck behind me especially on shorter irons And hitting a lot of short, right fat shots. I’ve worked hitting some balls into the net in the garage the last several days really trying to extend my trail arm as far as I could straight back to keep from getting the club too far inside and creating more space for my downswing. It feels kind of awkward but the results seem to be there because I really didn’t have more than one or two shots that I felt stuck on today. i’m continuing to hit my driver pretty good hitting on 11 out of 13 fairways and because I was able to really attack some of the flags with short irons, I ended up only having 30 putts for the round. 43 + 41 = 84 first sub 85 round in awhile Kenny B, gavinski91, MattF and 5 others 8 Quote XR Driver Matrix Ozik 8m3 Black Tie Shaft King F7 3W UST Mamiya Chrome Elements 7F4 Shaft King F7 5W UST Mamiya Chrome Elements 7F4 Shaft King F7 4 Hybrid Graphite Designs Tour AD-HY 95 Shaft PXG 0211 DC 5-PW Mitsubishi MMT 80 Shafts RTX ZIPCORE 50*,54*,58* UST Mamiya Recoil 95 Shafts Metal X Milled #7 with SuperStroke 2.0 grip MTB Twitter: @timldotson Instagram: timldotson Facebook: TimDotson
