How'd you play?

Got a little taller on the ball, a little higher on the backswing. This gave a really soaring high ball that was going about 5 - 10 yards longer, depending on club. Wasnt scoring today as I was really working on swing, but, probably shot around 80 ish I suppose.

All I told myself this morning on the way to the course was to be mindful and focus. I mentioned after my last round I was mentally out of it, so I was determined to not let that happen again. 

Irons were fantastic, driver was ok but didn't kill my score and my distance control with the putter was great. I got a little taller with my putting stance and that really helped me regain the touch I lost on Saturday.

Came up two rolls short of a birdie on 14 and lipped out my birdie putt from 10 feet on 18. So close to being under par!

Great round out there. Great job keeping that focus I had a couple holes on the my recent round where after bad drives I told myself to keep the focus and still try and score. I came very close to 2 big pars, but still was a lost closer to that than allowing a blow up. I hope to score like this one day, but for now happy to see someone else pull it off.

Thanks, guys! I will say, it is incredible how much effort it takes to be mentally focused over an entire 18 holes. It helped that everything was clicking today with the irons. A lot less worry in the back of my mind. 

Definitely set a high bar now, but hopefully I can keep building on this and gain some more consistency in scoring.

Man you're rounds continue to impress. You have 1 "off" round it seems (Off I refer to how you seem to feel about that round) and then you come back and put up this stuff. Fantastic! Such a clean sheet that is beautiful to see.

Been playing late day 9 hole rounds lately at a 27 hole course due to the COVID booking restrictions here. Last week I played the 3rd nine for the first time and shot a 40 to go with a 39 on another 9 two weeks ago. (Along with a 49 in the middle...). The first time I played this course, I shot a 38 last fall. 

Spent some time this weekend reflecting on how I could shoot 38-39-40 (+9 total) playing each 9 the first time and how to bring that approach and mindset into all my rounds. Two of the 9s have water and/or OB on 7+ holes which take driver out of your hands as there is usually only 50 yards between hazards. Playing at 6300-6400 yards, I can knock it around with my 2H to keep the ball in play off the tee and have a short iron approach on par 4's under 400. 

Pre-planning targets for tee shots/approaches using Google Maps and following a consistent pre-shot routine has helped me concentrate on the shot at hand. I think the biggest difference playing these courses again is having expectations about what is a good score and paying more attention to score than a process focus.

Need to get my driver swing cleaned up so I can trust the shape and commit to aim points off the tee to give myself more opportunities with wedges.

Bro, that's an awesome scorecard.  Is this your lowest round to date, or have you shot lower before?

Lowest round to date. I had a 76 here last fall during #CobraConnect and a 75 earlier this season. The biggest difference with today's round was that I got off to a good start and didn't hurt myself with mental mistakes.

Played yesterday in a scramble at a fairly difficult country club nearby.  Tips are around 76 course rating and even the whites were over par for course rating.  

A lot of forgettable shots and did not feel comfortable with my game or swing for most of the day.  Put together a few decent shots throughout the round and we finished -10, which was fair. 

Notable shot was a driving the green on the par 4 340 yard 5th hole to around 30 feet.  Did not make the eagle effort but tap in birdie.

Played a quick 9 this morning. My driver has been spotty but today was my best driving day in a very long time. I was hitting a legitimate fade instead of a slice. My pre-practice routine now includes watching a couple videos from Danny Maude on YouTube. My pre-shot routine now includes practice swings to encourage a free swinging feel and weight shift that I never had before.

Shot 42/38:80 with one birdie on the par 5 #13 today.  Had a birdie opp on my last hole to not birdie this year, Par 4 #16.  9 foot uphill putt that grazed the upper edge of the cup.  So I still have something to struggle for.  I mean, strive for....LOL.

Got my Ping G410 Driver back today.  Repaired head/shaft in 3 weeks, was expecting 6-8 weeks.

... Right there with you Foz. This year I have birdied 14 holes and eagled 3 of the par 5's (though I am just in a birdie challenge) but an opening hole birdie has eluded me. Plays 410 and uphill off the tee but a pretty flat green that has very subtle breaks. Probably had 30 birdie attempts since Dec 1st but none inside 15 feet. Just a fair but tough opening hole and I hope to join with a birdie sooner rather than later to check my last box.

I was hitting bombs* tonight.

With accuracy (most of the time). 

@MattF's old M5 seems to be coming alive for me. My shortest drive was 256 uphill into the wind, another 260 into the wind. Two were in the 280 range.

This one...

Slightly wind-aided with an August-like bounce and roll. (Ignore that it took me 3 to get down from green side - I chunked the chip a bit).

Last hole, need 1 more good swing...

Lipped out the birdie putt.

Only missed two fairways, scrambled for par on 1, the other into a penalty area, focused too much on an anti-right swing.

The problem tonight was approach. Two penalties on approach :facepalm:

Ended up +7 with 5 pars, a bogey, and three freaking doubles. Maybe if I'd have activated my calves it would have been better. 

*Bombs is obviously a relative term, but given my age (53), those are bombs, in my book.

I had a good time playing but played poorly, if that makes sense. The young fella I played with was great company but I had too many blowup holes. 3 7's and an 8 don't help. If I even bogied those holes I would have shot an 83 instead of a 91. Oh well, there's always the next round.

This is kind of how it works. This type of score will start popping up more and more. I kind of found that your index drops in waves of a few points as you reach new levels of play instead of 1/10’s. 
 

you’ll get used to lower scores, and they then become the new norm as you reach a place where all your hard work finally settles into place. 
 

that’s when the real fun starts. One of these days you’ll fin yourself -3 thru 14 or 15, and then you’ll really see where your mental game is...

Makes perfect sense. As a general rule I always have a good time playing. Even with shots that were solid but finished in a bad place. Yesterday for example. My first two shots with the driver. I hit solid drives among my best ever. I played for my usual slice but the slice never came. While the end result was not great, I crushed it for me. The score wasn’t reflective of how I felt my shots went. I’m seeing progress.

After several weeks of great play (won money 6 rounds in a row) for reasons totally unknown, and then several weeks of great front nine bad back nine or vice versa also unknown, I've leveled off again. I'm now routinely turning in bad scores front and back, so problem solved?

However, I did have my longest legit drive last week (not counting one that hit a cart path). 285 yds, smoked all the other geezers I play with.

Stupid game...same time tomorrow.

Early morning 9, 5 over 41 with 1 bird.  
started out 4 straight Bogie’s but turned it around last 5 holes.

Fairways/Greens hard with no rain in last 3 weeks.  Par on 9th was cool, nice drive 220, had 140 left over water and put 2nd shot a little short in front of green but was able to 2 putt.

Tough day today.  Did a slight swing and grip change yesterday with my coach and tried to apply it to today's round.  I did hit some really great shots, but there were enough errant ones to give me fits and a bad round.  Think I shot an 87, but it was mainly centered around 6 holes that I doubled for various reasons. It was pretty much a par or a double, all day!  I can't remember the last time I had so many double  bogeys.

Awesome!!! You got the distance. Is the course still playing weird, or did we just pick the wrong day?

It's playing faster than is normal, especially for this time of year. Plenty of run in the fairways and greens aren't holding very well.
