How'd you play?

Yesterday was league day.   Played 9 and shot 2 over (matched course handicap)   3 bogies and a birdie.  Struggled a bit off the tee as I only hit 3 fairways with a couple of wild shots; hit 3 greens and just missed 3 others; 14 total putts.   Lesson from a few weeks ago seems to be paying off and I am striking the ball more toward the center.    Just need more repetitions to get the new swing engrained.

I played Rock Hill again today, shot 42-50-92. Not the best of days, but I’m giving myself a pass.

I’ve been struggling with my irons and wedges so I did something today I normally don’t do. I got to the course an hour before our tee time and hit a large bucket of balls trying to figure things out. I think I did, because I hit the ball very well on the front 9, but after hitting so many balls beforehand I got tired and stiff midway through the round.

My takeaways from today?

I took a small step forward with the iron game, but there’s still work to do there. The wedges were the best they’ve been in quite a while (which was really nice to see), and my driver, hybrids and putter are still working well for me.
Things seem to be trending upward, so I’m hoping to see steady improvement once get back on a regular playing/practicing schedule again.

So, do you all want to know why my only real competitive round of the year so far went on Saturday as I attempted to qualify for the local big amateur tournament for Central New York? Well, even if you don't, you're going to learn today. Saturday afternoon I descended on Cortland Country Club for a 2:19 tee time for the qualifier for the AIM Championship. I played the front side at Cortland numerous times in High School, but that was 15 years ago I think at last check. Played off the blues from around 6350.

The round starts with a Par 5, OB right to farm land, the world to your left. I aimed down the left and hit a pretty straight drive, ends up right behind a tree on the left. Punch out sideways, get on the green in 5 so not my finest hour. Then as you know I've recently bought a new putter, the SIK Flo-C. I haven't three putted in 53 holes so what do I do? 4 putt for a NINE. Yup, great opening quad there dummy. Funny story, I follow that up with a birdie on the second. Honestly, the front side was ok when you forget I made a 9. I shot 8 over for the side, a 44. I did make another double on a par 5, again a drive behind a tree leading to a punch out.

The back side started with a couple of pars, a rough 3 putt double on a par 3 which kind of killed the momentum I was working through but I stood on the last tee +13 for the round. I was under no illusions of making the cut, which looked like it was going to be in the +9 to +11 range depending on what other people did. What I wasn't expecting was falling like a rock down the leaderboard. I hit a drive which lead me on a bad downhill lie, and then tried a punch fade to get under a branch in a scramble. Now, here's where I tell you that between the 17th and 18th fairway is the road to take to get back to the clubhouse and the parking lot. Well, my shot overfades, hits the roads multiple time and ends up by the 6th hole, past the clubhouse. Turns out... that's OB, so I go pick up my ball, drop it back where I hit my shot, and just begin the struggle to finish... with yet again another NINE. 46 on the back, 90 for the round.

This is where you wonder, but Berg, surely that doesn't tell the whole story. Well, let's look at the stats for hole scores. 1 birdie, 7 pars, 6 bogeys. That's right I was 5 over on 14 of the holes. Sure, the two doubles weren't great, one for a tough break, one due to a lipout for bogey, but man, those nines. When you're 9 over on two holes it's tough regardless. However, there were a lot of positives from this round in my eyes. I was striking my irons exceptionally well and the change to add a waggle to the pre-shot routine to work on adding some hinge to the swing was fruitful. It's just golf, bad things happen at bad times. It's all a learning experience. I look forward to taking the positives through the rest of 2021 and hopefully getting my game in a good enough shape for 2022 to take yet another crack at qualifying. I know I can do it, just got to keep those big numbers away.

Also, tagging @joen in this post. He played well in an earlier group, missed the cut by 1 shot. Felt worse for him than me to be honest. Missing by one is never fun.

Six over for the last four holes. My short game was non existent. I hit nine greens in regulation with no trouble getting off the tee. My chipping/pitching cost me five shots at a minimum. Actually spent an hour in the chipping area after the round because I was so disgusted.  I am glad you played well for the majority of the round!  Good to hear!

Terrible today. Again, no warm-up, but today I just couldn’t find a swing. I tried everything, but nothing worked. Driver was going two ways, irons weren’t going anywhere, chipping yips all over the place, just horrible. Add to this I was playing a Nicklaus design, and it couldn’t have been a worse day!

Yup. And I played the last three holes terribly as I had to rush a bit due to time (and let's be honest - I knew I wasn't in the running for a "low" round so maybe my mind was wandering a bit.)

Finished triple, double, quad. Unplayable ball in a pine tree on 16, sprayed my tee shot way right on 17 and on 18 after actually hitting the fairway I somehow snap hooked a pitching wedge from 135 yards onto the driving range (marked as OB) and then hit my drop into the bunker way behind the green.

I feel your pain!  I played the best golf of my life for a stretch last year...shot my lowest round of 80 in August, and then shot a 108 in Oct, 100 in Nov, 102 in Jan, and 101 in Feb.  Thankfully things seem to be on a better trend my last 2 rounds (85&84).  It's frustrating to try to figure out what went wrong in those high scoring rounds, but I guess it happens.

What a week. My buddy from college who I first played golf with 15 years ago came into town.  I played like once a year when we used to play and he played in college so he would wipe the floor with me. Since I started playing consistently he made a trip up for 4 rounds in 3 days.

Day 1: Blue Ridge Shadows (slope 131)

Absolutely miserable day for me. Worst score I've had since I started playing consistently. Was weird because wasn't terrible off the tee, but everything else was awful.

Score: 116 FIR: 8/14 (57%) GIR: 1/18 (6%) Putts: 41

Shot of the day: Only one to speak of was a 3hy flushed from 200+ out downhill to a blind green that landed 1 foot from the hole and settled on the back of the green.

Day 2: The Links at Gettysburg (slope 136)

Really fun course but really difficult course. Everybody in our group was struggling to get around this one in one piece. Putter started off hot with 1 putts on 1 and 2 and five 1 putts on the front. Cooled off a bit on the back.

Score: 106 FIR: 6/14 (43%) GIR: 0/18 (0%) Putts: 34

Shot of the day: Putt on 1. Scrambled to get to the center of a nasty green and then sunk a 25 footer up and over a probably 2' hump between me and the hole

Day 3: Bowling Green South Course (Slope 120)

I don't know what clicked, but something did. Trying to think through more stacking over my trail leg and pushing/swinging through but everything was better, especially on the front where I didn't card a double. Beat my buddy for the first time ever, which was fun, especially after looking like I'd been just lying to him about playing more the first two days. Would've flirted with a new best of 84 but hit a rocket of a hybrid over a green on the back nine, lost back, cleaned a punch chip back over and carded a triple.

Score: 88 FIR: 5/14 (36%) GIR: 4/18 (22%) Putts: 35

Shot of the round: For strike quality it was the 3hy that I hit 230+. For outcome there wasn't really a single crazy shot that stood out. Just played solid golf

Day 3 - part 2: Bowling Green North Course (Slope 131)

This will be the one that got away. We were first out after a morning league and started off the back and had pretty much the course to ourselves. Played the first nine at +6 and as we made the turn, storms were moving in. We were flying playing speed golf and thinking less had us both playing a lot better. Alas we caught up with a guy on 7 and storm got there and we had to head back with 15 played and I was at +11. Playing last 3 at +2 would've given me a new best, but wasn't to be.

Shot of the round: Yet again was a 3hy. Feel like I figured that out a bit as I moved it back in my stance and pushed hands forward a bit at address which has led to a lot cleaner contact. Hit one well from just over 200 out that hit and stuck about 8 feet away. Runner up: 6 iron that I faded around a tree (natural slicing ball flight) to about 6 feet.

Overall, really fun few days.

3 Fairways, 2 greens, 4 three putts and 2 penalties for a whopping 50. I also hit about 7 traps, if it wasn't 7 it sure felt like it.

I was in my own head the whole round and after hole 7 (6 and 7 were my only 2 good holes) I got a call from work that threw me way off once I finally got into a groove. Didn't even finish the last hole....I was probably not good company for @B.Bostontoday but I am glad I could provide a laugh at my expense and my foul mouth on the last 2.

While I didnt play well 6/7 showed me that A) planemate is working when I focus and stop worrying about outside factors and B) the shots were so crisp.

6-hit a somewhat heely drive 274, 9 iron in 2 putt par.

7-pured a 3 wood, little high but went 244, pured a 7 iron which was a little to much club but the way I was playing wanted to make sure I got it to the green. 2 putt from 15'

Gorgeous course, and a stellar 3 wood there. That hole looks like it would not jive well with my game, between the bunker pinching off the landing area and the elevated/protected green.

Gorgeous course, and a stellar 3 wood there. That hole looks like it would not jive well with my game, between the bunker pinching off the landing area and the elevated/protected green.

So this is a course I’ve talked about in the northeast welcome thread. The track is one of the best around. Very New England style, tight fairways, tree line and elevated greens. Downside is it took a massive hit with management over the past 15 years. Past 3 the grandkids took it over and brought in a new head greens keeper and it’s taking form again.
Rough is still poor and the traps are mediocre at best but the fairways and greens are getting back to the respectable course it once was.

The front 9 usually eats me up just because I can’t let the big dog eat, very pin point shots and I get frustrated being forced to lay up (grip and rip!) but I let it get the best of me today unfortunately

Played a scramble today for a local fundraiser.  We tried something different among the group.  Our spread was me as a 6, two guys who play to a 10 & 12 a real seasonal player that shoots 95-105.

I went first on all tee shots and approaches.  Normally I'll play as the anchor but Ive seen this before, putting the lowest handicap off first can sometimes be an advantage.  I wouldn't say it's foolproof but it definitely took pressure off the higher handicap guys.  They were looser and hit some pretty solid shots, in an event like this it was a good plan.  We finished third at -7 and took home a bottle of wine each.  The fun part is, 1st and 2nd place all get bottles of wine as a prize.

The organizers did a really great job calming down the competition by putting the emphasis on play and we decided to try something a little different.  All funds go to the local child advocacy center so its a giant win win.  Super fun day, got a good tan and got to play a pretty decent course.

Can't wait to do it again next year.

Love a good scramble. That’s a good approach. By 10 my scramble plans are usually out the window after a couple cocktails! Nice shooting

It's good to see they're taking an approach that's starting to restore it to its former glory. From the looks of it, its off to a good start. There's nothing sadder than seeing a good course mismanaged and a shadow of its old self.

One of my local courses has gone through the same thing. The guy that used to run it owns a holding company and he pooled his resources at the other courses he runs. He let the city take it back over a year ago. Now, a local guy took it over and it reopened earlier this year and he's gotten the greens looking great! I haven't gotten to play it, yet. I play a lot of solo rounds and tee times for loners start around 5 p.m., that's late for a guy that gets up at 3:30.

I'm glad you were able to play, even if it wasn't your best day. Just being out on the course chasing that ball around is so much fun.

That 3 wood was a bomb, btw.

Yes and I have a lot of fond memories when I was younger playing there so I keep playing it once or twice a year hoping it gets better. This year I have played 4 times already. The sign they are really turning around is there is a water feature on the 8th hole par 3, one of the more picturesque holes around, that feature has not ran in yearssssss and now it’s running so that’s very very positive IMO.

I still had a great day can just be frustrating looking back letting stupid stuff get into the old noggin

thank you. I actually caught it somewhat high on the face and hit it much higher than I normally do. Was a beautiful high draw though, piercing flight that I normally have I think would have been a PB with that club I caught it that flush.

It was a lot of fun. The group is a regular group of us who try to play 2-3 per summer and now that COVID rules have been eased it’s a lot easier / more comfortable for everyone.

Well as @Lacassem eluded to earlier we played a Thursday AM 9 hole round today.  I fared better than Mark but only slightly so.  I ended up with a 44.  Start off well with a Par after just missing the fairway, stroking a hybrid exactly where I wanted to and then an OK chip and two putts.

Second hole is where the party started... Took out the same hybrid and wanted to hit the same shot... blocked it far enough right it deserved to be lost, and almost did the same with my provisional.  Thanks to significant clearing over the winter I found both.  Couldn’t get out of the crap and got a double bogey.  Actually got penalty strokes on the next two holes, one in the water on a par three (ended up double bogey), and one driving into the marsh/protected area on a par 5 and continued to compound mistakes (triple).  I almost never take driver there, as it is a risk,  But Arccos said go for it and I gave it a shot.  The issue is if you go left your cut off around 250 yards where the right gets down to 300.   I went left and flew into the crap.  Then I finally settled down and hit some decent shots going +1 on the last 5 holes.

Highlights:  Putting continues to be rock solid.  I had 3 1-putts and 6 2-putts.  I tested myself plenty as my first putts were not rolling to tap in territory.  I think I made 3 or 4 in the 6-8 foot range to avoid a 3 putt.

The most impressive would be after this show on #8:

This wasn’t exactly the shot I was setting up for as the flag was on the far right, not the far left of the green.  Arccos had my distance to the hole as 67 feet.  I was able to knock the first to around 6 feet and made the second putt of par.

My best hole of the day came on #9, a downhill dogleg right par 4.

Here’s the tee shot:

It was into a light wind that was also pushing a bit to the right.  I got plenty of height on this one which is something I have been working on.  From there I had about 115 to the flag.

8C21E070-CA32-40C6-82BC-3FFD01514BB3.jpeg.4621e7a345b1a6665aa25b6e5c950cad.jpeg

I got too cute and came up a few paces short of the green and kicked right off the slope.  I took my 52* wedge and hit it in tight for an easy 1 foot tap in.

Not a bad way to end the round.  Keeps ya wanting to come back for more!

Nice swing on 9. I love the shape of that course btw.

Shot 86 today at Ballantrae in Birmingham, heat was killer. Should have done better, but I had the dreaded two way miss with the driver. 44/42. No birdies and 4 doubles, 2 on par 5s which is unacceptable.

Good news is was able to putt pretty well to save some pars, but need to get better at short game to turn more bogeys into pars.

... Had one of my favorite to play rounds today that was on fire right from the start. My new Sim2 Max 3 wood arrived yesterday and I wanted to put it through a test today. I usually hit driver on 10 holes so I moved up one tee box and played my new 3 wood off those tees instead. First hole hit a nice drive followed by a 7 iron from 165 to 15' and made the birdie putt. It was my last hole left in the 2021 birdie challenge so off to a great start. Birdied #2 and drove the green on #8 a short par 4 with the Sim2 3 wood. Hit a big drive on #9 and just missed my 4th birdie with my 3rd lip out on the front zs the Greenskeeper must have been in a bad mood because the point were brutal.

... Ran into 2 groups that stopped for snacks so came to a standstill on #10 and my back started to get tight and the magic was gone. Managed all pars til #18 and hit another big drive that ended up in the front of a divot. Really? Bogie free round and one of my best drives of the day deserved better but hey, that's golf ain't it. Squirted right into some grassy mounds and chipped to 5 feet but the putt broke much more than I thought and ended with my only bogie.

... The Sim2 Max is just insanely long for a 3 wood. I had 250 to the green on the last par 5 and came up 1yd short so 240 from the deck is big for me. On most of the tee shots (from 1 tee forward) I was as long or longer than my normal driver landing area so not only is the Sim2 Max easy to hit from the fairway it is crazy consistent off the tee as I only missed 1 of 10 fairways so to quote Eddie Money:

I think I'm in love
And my life's lookin' up
I think I'm in love
'Cause I can't get enough (no, no, no)
I think I'm in love
It's gotta be love

Great round!  Seems like Phoenix is treating you well! How do the courses compare from where you were in Chicago?

I played Cottonwood Hills in Bozeman today.  After 5 straight days of snow, sleet, and rain, I was eager to play.  Really nice weather; 46F when I started and 71F when I finished.  The Bridger Range was full of fresh snow and looked beautiful. I sure felt as though I played better than the 40/43 score, as that included 4 knock-out shots from under pine trees 😦.  I had three great drives that landed in the fairway but rolled off and found their way under.  They trim them up enough off the bottom that one can crouch and usually get a club on it - albeit with a real limited stroke.  Oh well, hopefully I've paid whatever dues owed to the golf gods.
