How'd you play?

Maiden voyage today with the Mavrik irons and I’m very happy with the results. 
I’d only been hitting them range balls, so I was a little off with my distances, but not by much. It was also the first time I played in 7 days, and 3rd time in a month, so that was a factor also. 

A bad storm called a halt to league play just as the A flight made the turn, so we headed to the clubhouse and went by 9 hole scores. I eked out 4th in a TB and won $40 shooting a 42.

I hit more good iron shots in 11 holes than I probably have in any 18 hole round with the 0211’s. The Mav’s feel better and are way more forgiving. I’ll call it a push as far as distance goes with maybe the slightest edge to the PXG. I’ll gladly give that up for the higher, straighter ball flight I saw today. It felt so good to hit my irons well again. It’s been so long, I’d almost forgotten what that felt like.

Hopefully the worm has turned,  and my iron game is finally headed back on track.

Glad to hear you like the Mavriks. I am looking semi long term about upgrading my irons and have eyed those, what made you pick them?

I had played the rogue X for 3 years before I bought the 0211’s (big mistake)  I wanted to get another set of the X’s but couldn’t find them, so I tried a few different GI irons, and the Mavriks worked the best for me.
I’m familiar with the Callaway “look” at setup, and I guess I need the forgiveness this category of irons gives me. The distance I get with them is also better than most I’ve compared them to. That’s important but I’m more into getting a nice accurate high ball flight than a few more yards.

Final day of the Diamante Classic and my partner and I played miserably.  2 man scramble was the format.  Opening hole is a par 3 at 153 yards.  Both of us on the green and my partner has the easier putt and is closer at 7 feet ... we both miss the birdie putt and the rest of the day went downhill.  Although we did birdie one hole, we basically stunk it up, missing putts and unable to score.  By the time we had 5 holes left, the 3 days of high temps and humidity got to both of us.  I was simply exhausted and had nothing in the tank.  After a 2nd place finish in Better Ball, a first place finish in the Stableford, we finished DFL in the scramble.   Our first place finish on day 2 earned us the right to play for the elimination round to determine the final pairing for the championship.  The format was alternate shot and my partner led off, putting me in the fairway bunker, 147 yards away from the pin.  I hit a 7 iron flush, but pulled it to the left of the green.  His chip failed to check and rain out 15 feet past the hole.  I made a good putt at it, but left it 6 inches above the hole and we tapped in for the bogey.  Of the 6 teams in this grouping, we were eliminated with the other team that missed the par putt.

Tough go for the final round, but it sounds like you played some great golf the first couple days.  Hoping you get that first 7 footer to drop on your next scramble and start the day off right!

Looks like you and your daughter had a blast.  I've been trying to get my 6 year old into golf that past few years as well.  She loves the driving range since she is constantly hitting one ball after another, but so far she finds the course too boring.  Any tips?

That’s a quick restoration time for that many customers, coming from a power company employee! I hope that A/C kicked in real quick…

Every year, 3 of my friends get together for a morning foursome where we play a 2 man scramble head to head.  How we play is a little unique but it's meant to just be fun.  After we figure out who wins, the winnings sit on the bar and we use that to pay for beers and food.

Here's how we do it...

Par 5's from the white tees

Par 4's from the middle blue tees

Par 3's from the back black tees

My team lost 2&1 on a ridiculous 30' putt from my buddy Matt.  It's fun and a good way for four dads to get a nice break from everything.

Semi rainout this morning but still got in 9. Tees off 1 hour late and started on #5. But it was play 5&6 find shelter, play 7 shelter, play 8 then shelter. Played 9-11, then 14&15 to finish. The last holes weren't fun as the back 9 has low holes that were just soaked. And I was soaked and it was getting incredibly humid very quickly so decided to stop. Hit the ball fine but it was decidedly not golf today.

I could only play nine this morning because of an outing. I've been a little light on sleep the last few nights so I was exhausted. Hit the ball reasonably straight but not terribly long. Still, I just missed two five footers for par on both No. 16 and No. 17 or else this would have been a one-over 37.

What I like is there is no pressure at all. We rotate around the county and try to play a new course every season just to shake it up.

Played 18 this morning and played well again. I don't know who this guy is this year. The only bad thing today was my driver was off. Usually I'm at  13 or 14 fairways hit. Today only 10. But only one was way off the mark but I recovered well. I almost got out of the aceless thread. But no, close but no cigar. I'll post pictures there in a bit. I wound up with one bogey and four birdies for a 68. I have 5 rounds in the 60's this year. This is the first time I ever had more than 3 in the same season. After posting my score it says my handicap is pending at 1.3. That will be my lowest ever.

The course rotation is a great idea.  We did it often when I played in New England.  You can find some really good courses.

Played in a VGA Tournament yesterday at New Mexico Tech in Socorro, NM. Not my best round, but did come in 2nd net score for my flight, and my gross score was good for first in my flight, and would’ve even been 1st in the flight just one up from mine. It was a shotgun start, and I started on #4 a par 3, which I tripled, and the only other triple came on my last hole of the day, #3. I shot a 48/40=88 with 2 birdies, 30 putts, one 3-putt, 5 fairways and 4 GIR. I also won a closest to the pin contest…but unfortunately missed that 3-4’ birdie putt.

... I played with 3 guys that had a very unique, at least to me, betting game of 9's. Many of you probably know this game but for those that don't:

All holes add up to 9 points.

low score gets 5 points
2nd lowest score gets 3 points
highest score gets 1 point

If there is a 2 way tie for low score both get 4 points and high score gets 1 point

If there is a tie for second lowest, you split 2 points each

If all tie there are no points given

... It was fun watching these guys alternate between rooting for or against another player depending on where they were in the hole.

I’m not 100% sure, but I think Mark Crossfield plays something like that with Matt Lockey and whoever else they have playing with them.

So my daughter is 3 years old, so pretty much just hanging out is fun to her ha. One thing I did was go with my buddy who also has a 4 year old daughter, which they enjoyed.

Lundin Golf Club in Fife for me today, ex-Open Qualifier. Sunny 72'F but with 25-35mph winds, started Double, bogey but came on to a decent game to finish with a 79 and my partner clinching a win with a net birdie at the last. Like most of the courses in Central Scotland at the moment, playing firm and fast. Downwind 300yd drives into lucky to get 200yds. This is the 2nd of a summer 4 leg match play where each of us host the group. Lost 3 and 2 at Dunbar, won 1 up today onto Milngavie in July. FYI if any of you Americans want to phonetically write how to pronounce Milngavie go for it!

I’d agree on the last sentence. More distance is great but accuracy, especially in 6 iron beyond, is much more important. 
 

I have some really old top flite irons so I’m playing with the lowest of the low. Just what my parents bought me for Xmas when I started playing in college. So looking to upgrade.

 

Not familiar with the 0211s, were they bad?

Played 9 twilight and didn’t play terrible overall had two blow up holes 8 on a par 4 and then 7 on par 4 .. but had 3 pars .. my short game was off .. took the new driver out and really like it.. had some really good drives

I love that driver! 
My friend has one with the Tour shaft, and he kills it. I’ve been hitting one on the range. I thought it would be a hook machine for me since I’m not a slicer, but it’s not. I love my G400 Max, but when I’m tired or stiff I struggle to square the face, and can hit a push or pull cut. The SFT seems to only want to hit a baby draw or go straight.
Hard to argue with those results, and as forgiving as the 400 Max is, I’d love to take the left side out of play off the tee. (I’m a lefty)
