Popular Post chisag
... OK, I went the opposite route today and was aggressive on every shot. No safe tee shots and fired at every flag. Shot an 83. Felt pretty reckless as I don't normally play this way. Just looking at a pin tucked over a bunker from 176 caused me to tense a little with my swing. Slight pull and in the bunker for an impossible up and down bogie. Miss that same amount aiming 15 feet right of that flag and I am putting for a birdie. Lots of misses that cost me. Normal lay up with a 4 iron but challenged the water at the dogleg with driver and didn't make it. Normal 5 iron short of the bunkers but driver put me into them. ... I will admit I was uncomfortable with quite a few shots which left a negative thought near my consciousness and I am just not used to playing recklessly. What I found particularly interesting is my swing felt great when hitting safe shots but it didn't take long to get a little out of sync attempting shots I normally would never attempt proving once again, this game is as much or more mental than physical. Hitting a 7 iron 165 to the middle of the green resulted in a free swing where firing at a sucker pin from 165 produced some tighter non free flowing swings. Shot a 43 on the front 9 which is by far my best ever 9 hole score. Back 9 was going fine until the last couple holes, really two bad holes. One hole i tried to get cute and put from the rough, that didn't work out well. And on 18, i had an 8 because i put pressure on myself and couldn't hit a hybrid off the tee under pressure. Because of the dogleg of the hole, hitting a driver would most likely have been too much. So i hit a hybrid and top it into a hazard. Should have hit driver and lived with hitting it through the fairway. Overall score was 93, which is my best round ever. Congratulations on the milestones! Popular Post Curtis Atkinson
Got out for a last minute twilight round. Started off pretty rough but got it together on the back nine. Really started striking the ball well. Played the first 5 in +11 and the remaining 13 in +8. 50/41 = 91 (+19) 6/14 FIR (43%) 6/18 GIR (33%) 36 putts (4 3-putts, 10 2-putts, 4 1-putts) Highlight: Pretty sure it's my first round with 2 birdies. First was following a rough drive I hit a 145 9-iron from the end of the driving range over a line of trees to about 6 feet. Second was a "no pictures on scorecards" on the shortest par 4 on the course drop kicked my drive barely into the fairway, hit a mediocre knock down PW to the center of the green then sunk a 50 foot winding putt that probably would've gone 15 feet by if it hadn't hit the pin and dropped. Also came about a foot from dunking a hole in one. Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
I decided to get to the course 15 minutes earlier than normal so I could hit a few balls on the range. Chip a little and putt a few. Well they had not brought the cart with range balls up yet. Said the heck with it and proceeded to the first tee. Even when i try to warm up it's just not meant to be. After my tee shot and approach, I knew it would be a good day. Started off with birdie. Parred my nemesis hole #2. Wound up with three birdies on the front with no bogies. Got another birdie on the back with no bogies throug 17. Going into 18 all I needed was par to break my personal best. I didn't let it get in my head. My drive was just off the fairway on the left side. I hit what I though was a perfect second shot. Tracking right at the front of an uphill green. I just knew it would bounce once and roll right up to the pin. But no, it plugged. Chip was good but left me with a three foot down hill breaker. Lipped out for bogey. Wound up shooting 68. DiscipleofPenick
I had a lesson Friday so this is a tale of two 18s. On Saturday we played Sleepy Hollow (just made Golf.com top 30 munis) and I shot an 86. Lots of thin/chunked wedges and still but the driver all over the place. Also every pin was in A$$hole locations and having to play 3 and 4 footers with inches of break and perfect pace isn't fun. I hit some shots but the lessons were giving me iffy thoughts. The changes were. 1. Get the left bicep on top of the chest to square upper body. 2. Keep the club online in the takeaway. I drop it way inside, a move from my 20s to combat banana slice. 3. Forward ball position. 4. Shorter back swing. So I started off today by showing up late at the home course and having to tee off on #5. I started with 4 bogeys in a row with bad chips and wild shots, thinking here we go again. Then I looked down and saw that my left arm, while on my chest, had gone dead straight, no elbow bend. I relaxed my arms to give a more natural feel at address, and I moved the ball back to center on irons and wedges. And I shot even par for the remaining 14 holes. Still need short game work, but this is encouraging. Popular Post Sluggo42
So, due to my 6 month stretch of hacking, I decided to make a few drastic swing changes, which, aren’t really drastic changes, but rather a removal of previous drastic changes… thats right, back to simplicity of motion, and squaring up with right angles. putting has been just that. Eyes right over the ball, a natural and neutral grip, toes on target line. I imagine a 4” line from putter face intersecting the 4” wide line from the cup, with whatever curvature the slope makes my mind create, and I just square up to the new “path”, and let her rip, or, delicately tap it, depending on need. for iron play, I really moved the ball back in my stance, as I believe that was causing so many of my “fat” hits. I really get my hands low. What I mean by that is instead of a straight line from shoulders, through arms, and shaft to the ball, I drop the arms almost straight down which creates an angle at the wrist out to the ball. I then start a one piece take-away, with the wrists holding the angle from address all the way up. Now, this is where I think a major change happened. I start the swing with both arms and chest, and, in my mind, it feels to me, how Steve Stricker looks to my eyes. But the results have been phenomenal. My buddy, says he looks at my ball during the swing, and says the divot is starting AFTeR contacting the ball. And that it sounds different as well. And the best part is that it seems easier, and the ball has been going 10-15 yards further, with either a soft baby draw, or quite straight. hitting the driver very similarly, teeing up about even with left heel, and dropping hands straight down, etc… the one caveat is that Ive been playing the combo tees instead of the blues, but at 65, I just can’t hit my drives 270+ anymore. If fact, a 270 yard drive has become a monster shot for me, and the 240-250 is now the norm for a well hit ball. so, when I post in “how did you play”, this is what I’m thinking, but not writing. Popular Post Tom D.
Played my usual back-nine round this morning; chipping was really on point today, which meant I had six one putts . None of those were for birdie however, as I was short on almost every hole. So it was a scrambling round. Solid 36 on the front finishing with 2 birdies. The back nine. Not so good. 22 total back nine putts. Really solid 42 for a 78. Best I struck the ball in months. I honestly don't spend much money on golf equipment, but I'm constantly reading reviews in case I ever get ready to buy I swing left handed and have been the State of Maine Left Hander's champion since 1997, the last year they held the tournament. I'm currently a 7.1 handicap. Trying to get lower, but my gut gets in the way. WITB Driver: Epic speed 9 degree Irons: 990's S300 Stiff shafts bought when I was in college. Popular Post RollingGreens
39/41 for my personal best of 80!! Even better it was a club event 4th of July tournament. Played great with 35 putts. Short game and accuracy off the tee today were fantastic. Hit 50% of GIR and 3/4 par 3s. Put up one of the best net scores with my handicap of the tournament. Popular Post cksurfdude
Last round a few days ago was one of those classic up and down rounds -- first hole .. almost birdie .. next hole .. triple .. next hole .. another almost birdie .. then .. another triple .. and .. so .. on... So a few days of a few minutes of practicing a new body movement (from the Monte Scheinblum clinic I was at least weekend) each day and I wanna say that I might possibly almost maybe could be slooowly starting to just a wee bit actually get a whiff of what he and multiple other instructors have been trying to bang into my thick skull for years... Played 9 this afternoon and while I still had plenty of sloppy shots I definitely started to get the new *feel* going! Missed left a lot, but generally not too bad; had two tee shots into the left rough - but not too far in and the rough was not too tall and thick - yet it still resulted in two lost balls??!!!?? A little frustrating but made good recovery shots. The highlight hole -- hit a really great tee shot on a dogleg left that carried the trees on the inside and must've taken a huge bounce forward as I found my ball in the middle of the fairway, about 95 yards short of the back pin .. with an uphill shot into a bowl-like green surrounded by fescue covered mounds .. hit a solid pitch right at the flag, lagged the first putt to within inches .. whoo hoo! cnosil, Rickp, azstu324 and 11 others 14 Quote WITB of an "aspiring" play-ah ... I was in Phoenix for a meeting the July after that rock was moved for Tiger. As a then 16 handicap I birdied 15, got up and down out of the left bunker for par on 16, parred 17 from right of the green, and parred 18 from the rough by the fairway bunkers on the right. So, one under par over the last 4 holes. I don't remember any of the other holes on the course, but I will always remember those 4 holes. Oh... and the round cost $52. Popular Post MattF
Tale of two nine's again yesterday, but better. Went 45/39 84. We got around in 4.5 hours, which on a Sunday at Windmill is pretty good. Highlight hole was the par 3 #12 playing 180 to the pin. Hit a laser 6 iron 175 and made the 12 footer for my only birdie of the day. Popular Post tony@CIC
Played in our regular Saturday morning group. Ok on the front - which is the more difficult of the 9's - ended up with a 44. and that was with 3 bad drives! I expected to do a lot better on the back - but no luck - ended up with a 47 . I normally shoot in the low 40's on the back. Guess the golf gods givith and ....... Our team won $10. each that eased some of the pain.
