Nice because it was cooler, but apparently I was quite awake yet. Teeing off on Sat at 5:45am, I struggled to even hit the ball. I didn't make my first par until hole #7, but I did have a triple double; I hear that's pretty good... in basketball!! Shot 87. Sunday was a little better teeing off at 6:20am; shot 83 but still had 3 doubles. I did manage a 15 foot downhill birdie on the par 3 #4 playing 139 yards and a short birdie putt on the par 3 #8 hole playing 216 yards. The 5 days of 109-118º and 3 weeks of over 100º heat has taken a toll on our course. The tops of the grassy mounds can't get enough water when irrigating and the grass has died in many spots. Hole #3: On the par 5 #6 hole, my drive was in the middle of the fairway... right here: Didn't hit the best of shots, but missed this dead patch... I was in the next one closer to the green. I got a lucky bounce on the par 3 #8 hole playing 216 yards for this putt for birdie. Mine is the closest to the pin. I can't believe I'm saying this, but....... I wish it would rain!!!!!!!! 5:45 am, like in the morning . That’s early!! Earliest I’ve played was 6:30 am which was an experiment they tried at a local course. Only lasted 1 year, the greens staff were having trouble getting early morning work done also Pro Shop Staff didn’t like it either. Greens were rolling well for the most part and while everything was wet there was less casual water than I was expecting. As for my performance I was VERY up and down with some really good shots and some head scratchers. I started out with a double bogey and a 3-putt on one. OUCH but it happens. Second hole I hit OB off the tee. Hit a good second drive 270 just in the left rough. I then proceeded to hole out from 152 with an 8-iron… for par! Haha Another example of the up and down nature… I had this 5-iron from 190 on the par 3 8th hole: Landed just past the hole and trickled down the ridge back towards the hole. I then managed to miss the 2 foot birdie attempt and walked away with par so that goes down as an unofficial “3-putt” because you just can’t miss those! Overall though I was happy with most of my play. Had a strong game off the tee (outside of 3 early penalties) and was very happy to see 255 average and 287 long. My driver was on fire on the back 9 where I had every drive over 259 including a few in the 270s. This was despite soft conditions. Here is my drive on 17: That was all of 270 on the fly as it bounced back and basically came back a foot from where I landed. Some highlight holes: All in all, a great day of golf… it’s always a good time when I can outdrive @Lacassem a few times! Great round! Especially with that hole out from 152, that's awesome! Popular Post GolfSpy_SHARK
I had probably one of the most fun tournaments I’ve ever played in today…..and that’s with absolute monsoon conditions for 6 holes. played at one of the premier courses around in Pinehills country club in Plymouth, MA. Was put on by C&W services which is a facilities group and they pulled all the stops. Unlimited range balls, fantastic breakfast lunch and dinner, great prizes and open bar all day, incredible. represented MGS well today was worried about it being cancelled, was light rain when I got there, had a great range session and we got to our starting hole 17 @ 9am. The sky’s absolutely opened up as soon as we teed off. It downpoured for about 6 holes. I went through 6 gloves and 5 towels lol. My rain jacket soaked through, which I didn’t think could be done. But if anyone is looking for rain shoes I put the UA HOVR shoes to the test today…..buy them I have dry feet. we pard 4 and birdied 2 of those 6 holes which was honestly extremely impressive IMO. My game was on and we had another guy similar handicap to me that is a really good player, other 2 drained some putts on those 6 for us that saved our butts. well sky’s cleared and the sun poked out. We proceeded to go 8 under after the first 6 with a completely clean card, 1 eagle and 8 birds. The course drained surprisingly and dried up a bit, and we finished dry as you can see below. irons and wedges were filthy today, tucked some close and put several wedges to tap in distance. No incredible drives but the short game worked for us. One frustrating part was I put closest to the pin hole to 3’ 2” which I found out would have won. There was a 12” written down on the card so I didn’t write it down, come to find out some moron wrote a porn stars name in……I didn’t catch the joke…..kid won it with a 4’ 6” ball…… all in all we came in second. Won 100$ and the course gave EVERYONE a free round good until next November for sticking out the rain! The good news is that playing here has helped my short game immensely, and I play sand shots reasonably well now... after lots of practice!! If that's unlimited play, $3000/year for two players on a good quality course really isn't all that bad... especially as much as I know you both play. The only drawback to the member or annual pay arrangement is that one sometimes feels stuck having to play the same track to amortize the investment. That's what intrigues me about SCG; 4 championship caliber courses on the property and all available as part of the homeowner annual golf pass. DiscipleofPenick
2 hours ago, Kenny B said: I dealt with the same issue for many years. My wife and I could play all the golf we wanted on a 9-hole executive course: one par 5, 2 par 3's, 6 par 4's. Fun layout built by one of the local pros, and he did most all of the daily work himself. Annual fee was $900 for the both of us, including cart if we wanted. The greens were small and stimped about 6-7, far below any other course in the area. I didn't treat the course as a place to keep score, but rather a place to practice. We had some fun rounds with the pro in one group of 6 or 7 or however many showed up!! It didn't have any bunkers, so I never got to practice out of sand. When I retired, I told my wife I wanted to play at a full course with practice facility, so we moved to the most cost-effective course in our area. However, it costs us almost $3000 a year to play a muni. It's the price we have to live with to play a decent course in our area. The good news is that playing here has helped my short game immensely, and I play sand shots reasonably well now... after lots of practice!! Yea, unfortunately not many courses in my immediate area offer season passes. I talked with my wife about moving on/upgrading maybe in the next year or two. If the other courses weren't cart only, I'd have made the jump to the less expensive one. We've also looked at some of the lesser country clubs, but we're locked into a year long membership and neither of us care about the society aspects. I want to golf April through November. I did find one golf only club within half an hour, waiting to hear back from them. M. Parsons
Played in the NM VGA State Championship this past Saturday at NMSU in Las Cruces and shot a 43/43-86 with 19/16-35 putts (3 3-putts, 4 1-putts), 2 doubles, 10 bogeys and 6 pars, 4 fairways and 7 greens. I felt like I was a little timid at times and definitely left some out there. I also didn’t seem to be hitting it as far as I usually do, so I had to adjust quickly. I wound up finishing 1st for my Flight, but full disclosure, there was only one other guy in my Flight. Next up is the VGA Regional in AZ at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes, which is a 36-hole tournament. I did a few lessons with a guy who is no longer teaching under him. He used to teach at Oxmoor but RTJ execs cut all independent contractor (including teaching pros) Jan 1 2021. Dumb move on their part in my opinion. He's at Timberline, Heatherwood, and Ballantrae now. I was sold on them because during my first lesson, as we talked about goals he said his philosophy is to not get you a perfect swing but a repeatable one because we can't/don't practice everyday. He said he could teach me to hit it further or work it both ways etc. but if we focus on ball striking and hit more greens, scores will go down. Popular Post edingc
- 38/41 = 79 (+7) - 5/15 FIR - 9/18 GIR (3 birdies) - 30 Putts (2 3-putts, 8 2-putts, 8 1-putts) Streaky! Three birdies but two doubles on par 5s. One was a complete mental mistake as I aimed right at a back right tucked pin from 100 out and hung out a little fade that hopped off the back of the green. I made a mess from there. Otherwise, a pretty solid round. Pins were still in tough places from the "Greenskeeper's Revenge" scramble Saturday, so I'm not sweating the two three putts on the back. Driver was pretty squirrelly but put together some good shots to get those birdies. I even birdied No. 7, the No. 1 handicapped hole, with a good drive and 9 iron to about five feet from 155 yards out. Rickp
Tuesday Exec 9 with the added attraction of. Sinkhole on the sister course with local Orlando TV channels losing their minds over it. Anyway 2nd decent morning, hitting irons & hybrid well. Course is short Driver not necessary. Even had a little draw creeping back into ball flight, life is good. Putting could be a little better but not going to whine. Shot +3, 6 Pars & 3 Bogies.
