Nothing gets my blood boiling more than a lost ball that had no reason to be lost. Double kudos to you for keeping it together. Haha

your 2 iron is the club that wouldn’t be in my bag for a few reasons, besides being difficult to hit. Mostly is that I don’t know that I would find many opportunities to hit that club vs one of my wedges.

you’ve still got the swing speed and the different results which bring different shot opportunities, so that probably why we see a difference in clubs. I really can’t seem to get on in 2 on any of the par 5’s anymore so I just try to set up an easy 3rd shot. Those long guns probably keep you going at those shots, and you probably don’t use a driver on every hole either, which creates more long club shots.

i suppose we all have different games which require different set-ups, and being limited to 14 stix can be frustrating to some. I’d imagine that the pros have a floating 14, and that they probably set their bags up differently for all the different tracks they play, depending on how that week is laid out. I don’t have that problem as I’m playing the same few tracks again and again…

 

... I joined a course for 2 months so I will be playing there almost exclusively for Aug/Sept. Here are my tee choices:

Driver - 9 holes
3 wood - 2 holes (depending on wind)
2 iron - 4 holes (depending on wind)

... Two of the par 5's are 503 and 499 so I can reach both in two with a good drive and will use 3/5 wood, 2 iron and an occasional 4 iron. 
... Yesterday was my best driving day so far this year and found myself in the gap between gw and lw range quite a few times when normally it is once or twice a round. I have used my lw exclusively around the greens for my entire career but have had to add the gw for bump and runs here in Phoenix on these Bermuda greens that have very tight lies, combined with grain that releases or checks when throwing my lw all the way to the hole. Very different than bent grass I played on in the Midwest. I also had very little use for my 2 iron back in Chicago unless it was a very windy day and then I just took the 5 wood out of my bag. 

.... Bottom line is I need more rounds with my swing change to see if I will be in the gap area more than the past. There is a chance I could drop my 3 wood depending on how my new Sim2 Max 5 wood performs. Having a problem I have never experienced in the Midwest, as my 3 wood is almost as long as my driver which I think is a combination of faster fairways with roll and the Sim2 just being silly long. I do think a 45*-49*-53*-58* would be ideal.

Not a good day on the course today.....struggled with ball striking, struggled with wedges, and struggled with my putter and shot a whopping 10 strokes over my course handicap.  I don't know if it was because I woke up at 2:30 am and couldn't get back to sleep for a couple of hours or it was just one of those days....but, I'm going to leave it at that.

Funny part is I forgot my EVNROLL at home and had to negotiate with the pro shop to let me take a Stoke Lab Tuttle on the course and keep the plastic wrap on it. Got to the course late and and was able to hit about 10 putts with it on the practice green. 
 

2x 3 putts and 1 tee ball OB were the main issues keeping me from another round in the 70s. I think I have broken a scoring plateau… with one month left in the season, can I get to a single digit?

My average differential from last 3 rounds is 9.1 and tomorrow my handicap should hit 11.5. Late summer run #LGLG

Played 81 holes from Thursday thru Monday.  It ranged from "sort of OK" to "why am I doing this to myself."  LOL

I *did* manage to place tied for third in my flight in a Men's Club event on saturday, that was based on quota points, a format I was unfamiliar with.  The quota was based on hdcp and tees being played, scoring was not unlike stableford.  You got 1 pt for a bogey, 2 for a par, 3 for birdies, and 4 for eagle.  

I hit my quota exactly, so my score for the event was Zero (I was net even par, fwiw).  I was one point back of the leaders.  Find it a bit funny that a zero gets me T3.  LOL

The other interesting thing from the weekend...  playing five days in a row has had a lovely side effect.  Have some lower back things going on, resulting in sciatica.  Until this morning, the sciatica has been singing the song of its people, all in my left leg, for the last 2-3 days.  Ugh.

50/45 for 95 in a hot, humid, nasty round. Only hit 5 FIR and 2 GIR, had 3 pars and no birdies. Two 3 putts but one of them was on my nemesis green that I made every effort to be below the hole on, but my approach out of the rough went long. 
 

My good drives were awesome. My bad drives were the complete opposite of awesome. Had some nice 5i shots which were helpful when the drives were bad but I developed a case of the fats as the round went on, including with wedges. 2 balls lost off the tee and of course one of those was followed up by dunking my next shot in the water just a few feet short of clearing the hazard. But I wasn’t in the office today, so all good

Better off the tee today, hitting 8 of 14 fairways, but my approach shots left a lot of strokes out there.  I think I only hit 6 GIR and, again, my wedge lost strokes.  Shot an 83, including an OB on #1 that left me with a double on the opening par 5.  Sadly, I got another double later in the round, as well.

Played with Foz today - shot 40-39 79

Balance felt off all day but I hit enough good shots, chips and putts to feel good about the day overall.

The course that we played was in great shape. Fairways and greens were close to perfect and rough was thick but fair. 
 

On a side note we had a tornado or micro burst come through last evening - it did damage from around the course to my neighborhood about 5 miles away.

I traveled an hour to play with RevKev today. We played at Seminole Lake, a very flat course with a lot of doglegs.  We played the white tees at 5908 yds as compared to my home course where I play 5300 yds. The extra 600 yards off caused me to use a lot of fairway woods.  I shot a 45/43:88 with a birdie on the 443 yard Par 5 #14. (Driver/3W/9 iron/Putter).  My 3rd shot with the 9 iron landed on the green and rolled out to hit the pin, leaving me with a 3 foot birdie.

Just to confirm...  Yes it was!!  I have very similar nights.  It's especially difficult to play decent when the tee time is early like I've had lately due to the heat.

OK, final results ...  My wife won 2&1 and is the 2021 Columbia Point GC Ladies Match Play Champion.  First time she has won any competitive event.  Her opponent was a big hitter, but my wife beat her with a much better short game.  She has worked very hard on chipping and especially putting all year... taught her everything I know!!    That took all of 5 minutes!!    Her dad would be very proud; he was a club champion at 3 country clubs in the Spokane/CdA area back in the 50's and 60's.

Really good news today.  At least from a golf perspective.

Came directly home to post about it since I only use my cell as a phone..

Got up at the butt crack of dawn and played my first nine coming off the sore shoulder.

If bogies were valuable, I could go out and buy a Bentley this afternoon.

BUT

I got through the entire front nine without making a double

[I was never good enough to complain about a double-free round]

AND

the shoulder feels fine.

Got through the nine in two hours and twenty minutes.

I’m pretty sure that I’m good to go 18 on Monday.

 

But the morning got off to a terrible start.

As I was gulping down a cup of coffee, I glanced at the newspaper.

A kid that I'd coached in Little League decades ago was just arraigned for beating and strangling to death a thirteen year old girl that he had out working the street.  I almost threw up.

His younger brother is already in prison for multiple breaking and enterings.

What I remember about them as kids was that they were always talking about "uncles" who lived in their house with them.

Some people never had a chance, it seems, not that there's any excuse for what they do.

 

But that's what golf does for a brief time. While you're on the course, the rest of the world ceases to exist.

Got in an early round this morning.  Finished with a 52.  Lots of doubles or worse today.  I have so many wayward shots that just crush my scores.  It's frustrating to stripe a great one and then push one into the next fairway.  Guess that is just golf at the moment. 

Short game around the green is feeling good though.  I'm getting in close with my wedges and that feels pretty good.  I need to slow down putting and make sure I hit my line, but only had four 3 putts today.  

But this view from the opening tee box is something else .....

Solid 46 today. Played local track from the tips. Par three fourth was only three putt after a 225 yard tee shot with a 5i that was 30 yards left of the green. Biggest story was the driver game. Ball did not go right. Took me a few holes to realize and adjust. Lost some balls still from it but not bad. Distance was consistent and SG was high. Lots of hard pan so plenty of roll but dang. Last drive was 271 into a 15-20 mph head wind (a provisional). New swing is kicking in. Also adopted a preshot routine and I think that helped me be more reactive and less mechanical

Played 18 this morning at River Heights in DeKalb with my son.  Course was in rough shape even by my low standards, not that condition has any effect on my play.

I was pretty solid early on but not at all consistent.  Holed out a couple of 15-20 foot putts, but also had several 3-putt bogeys.  The fact that I had a number of birdie opportunities is very encouraging, though.  Been working hard on not leaving my follow through short.  Between that and playing all my shots a ball or two back in my stance led to a larger amount of solid strikes. 

Driver was either popped up straight but very short or pretty deep but sliced hard right. Trying to play one shot shape led to the other, and vice versa. 

Wheels came off on hole 13.  I think I just ran out of gas.  Suddenly I was chunking shot after shot the rest of the way.  Son had similar issues on the back half and was frustrated enough that he played the entire par 5 15th with his 3 wood, including out of the bunker and on the green, lol.

He shot a 98 (his worst round in a while) and I shot 108, which was actually pretty good for me.  Course was quiet, sun was shining.  10/10 would do it again, can't wait for the next one.

One step forward, one step back...

After a really good back 9 last weekend followed that up with a very poor 9 yesterday - mostly all off the tee where I hit into a penalty or lost a stroke on 8/9 holes. Yuck. Struggled on too many second and approach shots, too .. just not hitting the ball solidly.

On the bright side the short game was generally working well .. landed a few 40-50 yard pitches close, greenside chipping went in the right direction but rolled out a little too much and at least the putting was dependable again .. lagging was good, rolled in a few 5-8 footers and caught the edge of the cup on a few others leaving the ball within a foot each time.

I do feel, though, as if I'm starting to "get" the better body movements in the swing I've been trying to learn .. just need to keep telling myself to be patient and to keep working on it!!

Monday & Tuesday Execs and used the time to work out what was going on with the hand. 
Wednesday played 18 “Big Boy” and wasn’t bad.  Driver was fantastic BUT irons couldn’t control them at all.  Did manage a couple birdies.  
Friday Bacon Boyz Exec, really struggling with everything except putter.  Did eek out a couple Pars & Bird.

Im still going to play next week until Wednesday and see what new Orthopedic Doc says about XRays on hand/arm and Ulnar nerve.

My left arm ulnar doesn't fire right either, three fingers on my left hand tingle, but I play right handed and eventually got used it.

I made a 4 1/2 drive to my buddy’s for some golf. It was nice to golf with buddies again. Carded a couple of pars today including an up and down from a bunker for par. Nothing like a 2 footer for par with my best sand shot ever.

Great day on the course today.  Hit the ball solid with a couple of errors.  4 bogeys, 1 birdie for a 3 over par 75.

.... Went to the bank on my way to the course today. Really cool inside the bank and walking out I thought I was a pizza going into a stone fireplace. Car temp said 117* and all on it's own thinking it was a Tesla, my G80 turned back toward home. Just 107* tomorrow so I have a 3pm time. It's interesting playing twilite in the heat because when the sun starts setting it feels like it really cools off but it is just a welcome illusion. Played at 109* Wednesday and when I got to the car and the sun almost gone it was only 105*.  I would have sworn it was around 95*. The direct AZ sun in summer is just so intense!
