Popular Post chisag
... After taking several days off with heat warnings and temps 110+ after taking over a week off with a sprained toe I had a long talk with my old golf instructor (me) and we came to the conclusion I needed to fire my new coach (me). While the idea of a more back friendly swing made perfect sense my old instructor (me) reminded me I was 68 and needed to "swing my swing". GolfSpy TCB
Just finished licking my wounds from the Club Championship Tourney this last weekend. Now that I'm past the "re-living each poor shot" phase, I'm into the "embracing the well executed shots" phase of the post mortem. Probably lucky for me that my club is closed on Mondays, and then the Tropical Storm that rolled through SE Texas closed the club yesterday as well. Which gave me two full days to re-group, and analyze the scores from the tourney as I start planning for my '22 Season. My Club uses Golf Genius for all its events, so I have shot by shot, hole by hole data for all the players in all the flights... It's great for someone geeky into stats like I am. My personal play was the tale of band-aids and bubble gum. I started the first day of the tourney on a par 3 (shotgun start), and I knew from the first swing that I would be trying to piece together a full 18 holes. My first 4 holes, I thinned every one of my iron shots... thin to the point that if I was still playing balatas... I would have had to replace 4 balls due to nifty smiles cut into them. I worked hard to just "play the next shot" opposed to thinking about the poor shot I just hit, and it helped me keep my sanity for the round. Scrambling was the name of the game that day. Day 2 was much better from an approach standpoint and came out of the gate with reasonable birdie putts on my first three holes (par, par, par) then a collapse on #4 - finding the water twice on my way to a triple bogey - effectively negating any roll I was on. Overall, my ball striking was much better on day 2 than day 1, but my score was better on day 1... go figure. As usual, after validating my card... I took my frustrated game to the range on the way to the car... and proceeded to hit 2 poor shots, then striped about 10 straight... so I went home with the feel of solid shots in my hands and in my brain. The joy of golf. ejgaudette, JerryB, RollingGreens and 5 others 8 Quote Titleist TSR3 9* (A2 setting) Driver - Graphite Design Tour AD UB-5 R1 Titleist TSR2+ 3 Wood - Graphite Design Tour AD UB-5 R1 Srixon ZX 5W Callaway Paradym 4-PW Titleist Vokey SM9 50-08, 54-10 & 58-08 Scotty Cameron Super Select Newport 2.5 2023 Titleist ProV1

It didn't help that our greens were punched last week so I found it hard to try to putt well. Drove the ball ok - only penalty was a pulled 6 iron into a pond on a par 3 (triple after a three putt). Next hole dead into the wind (relatively breezy by our standards). Decent drive, choked down a 4h for second - playing 190 to the center. Wind died the second I hit the ball and flew the green by 10 yards followed by a crappy bounce - another triple. At that point I lost interest since we're only playing for skins. A couple holes later I crushed a drive past pin high on a 320 yard hole. Skulled wedge over the green and just picked up on that hole. Not a fun night, but better than doing yard work, I suppose. chisag
Just now, Kenny B said: So... what will your old coach (you) say to your new coach (you) when the back goes out? ... Good question. Over simplified I am turning more with the body and using it as my power source to take pressure off my back. For me that is unnatural and a cause of too many extremely errant shots, some a full fairway right. I am incorporating that same move but simply having my arms lead the backswing instead of my body. To the untrained eye, it will look identical. The goal was to reduce the X Factor between my shoulders and hips and I will continue to do that. I will just lead with my arms with the body following as opposed to my body leading with the arms following. CarlH, JohnSmalls, Rickp and 4 others 7 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... CarlH
Struggled on the front with 2 doubles, one caused by an OB the other just not focused, along with just poor ball striking, shooting a 44 for the front 9. Found my stride on the back and started hitting the ball better, as well as draining some nice putts. 37 on the back 9 to come in with an 81. Not great, but I was just glad that I was able to right the ship and bring home a better back 9. I did make a 30 foot and a 45 foot putt to save par. 2 doubles on the front (one was an OB) and 2 birdies on the back. Birdie on 18 was a nice drive dead center fairway, a well struck 9 iron that hit and stopped 3 feet to the right of the pin and rolled it in the heart to close the round. Always nice to finish strong. Popular Post Syks7
Played hooky today. It's handy being the boss, even if I am my only employee. Had an interesting day. Let's just say that I played pretty well, but used all of the golf course.... Game wise: Very short approach (inside 25 yards) is still the bane of my golf existence but I only had one flubbed chip today. On most of them I gave myself a pretty reasonable look at a par opportunity. I'm just not quite accurate enough that I'm getting it inside my high percentage make range yet. It's a work in progress. Putting was pretty reasonable, 34 putts with three or four that were close to dropping and one or two more that I would have made if I'd given it enough pace. Missing short low is so aggravating when it's on the right line. I also had some 6-8 footers that I dropped to save bogey and I didn't miss anything inside 4 feet. I'm very happy with that. The one issue that I still have in putting is my very long lag putting. I was on in regulation and left a lag way short, ran the resulting 10 footer across the top edge, and ended up with my only 3 putt of the day. Approach was also pretty good today too. I spent practice the other day dialing in carry ranges. I put together a little table in a booklet with my short and long ranges for each club. I then averaged those numbers and multiplied it by .95. I played the 95% carry distance all day and for the most part it was excellent. It took a lot of pressure out of planning a shot and I never felt like I had to go after the ball to get it on the green. All in all it was one of my most comfortable days with my irons in a long time. Onto the main event... My driver. Man was I wild with it today. I was just blocking everything including irons off the tee until I got it semi under control for the back 9. Most of the front I was immediately in jail off the tee. By the back I still wasn't hitting a ton of fairways, but I'd at least gotten it under enough control that I was only a few yards into the rough. When I figured out what I was doing it was subtle but laughably stupid and I started to see more of the higher end carry numbers out of it at the end. Pretty good day, but still lots of room for improvement. RDel90
13 hours ago, Syks7 said: I swear I was looking at my stock yardarge log!! So got a round in yesterday at my home track (69.9/123). Shot a personal best 86 (42/44) Caveat I had a great swing day....or was is the ball switch to the Titleist Left Dot?!?!?! Actually, trough some foot spray and a fitting that didn't go very well, I figured out I was striking off the heel resulting in my hooks. I came to realize I had balance/tilt (causing me to slightly fall forward) and weight distribution issues (leading to even more neg AoA through bag). So this round I went with a little more forward tilt getting balance more towards middle/ball of feet. Also, as I bump my hip towards target making sure weight was more 50/50 (instead of more loaded towards front foot) and that my head was positioned more between the middle of stance and back foot at address. Was going to be an interesting day also considering my rangefinder battery decided to die on the 1st hole so had to rely on Arccos GPS for the day. Distance wise off the tee with the Titleist Left Dot, I didn't see any significant distance difference compared to CSX LS. I did notice my tee shots were more straight/baby draw than the hooks I usually have been hitting. So definitely better dispersion getting out there about 250 avg. Hit 8/13 fairways with the big stick, another PB. Trajectory was nice with this ball. Not too high and not too low. So tough to fully give credit to the ball, considering the setup changes made. My biggest struggle of the day was with 3 and 4 hybrids. My 2 blowup holes were par 5s where I carded my only 7 and only 8 for the day from duffing a couple hybrids. Really need to work on the ball positioning/AoA with these clubs. Irons wedges and putter is where the Left Dot shined for me. I was gaming the Bridgestone Tour B X for several months as I loved the distance off the tee and irons, but the short iron/wedge feel and ability to hold greens left a lot to be desired for me. The switch to the CSX LS from Tour B X after the MGS ball test gave be the improved feel with the short clubs and was able to hold greens again. Drop and a couple hops sometimes a little roll. The Left Dot just felt so buttery off the club face. Hit some of my best iron shots this round. I held greens drop and stop (within 2ft from ball marks) with 7i from 165-170 out down through my wedges. Yet another PB with 8/18 GIRs for the day. Putter roll of the Left Dot was true and smooth and I felt like the ball was easy to maintain speed control with little stroke effort, whereas the CSX LS for me has a little more pop and firmness off the putter face resulting in working a little more to control speed. So the stroke felt awesome, but ended up with 36 putts (vs 31-32 putts previous rounds at my course with CSX LS) for the round, as hitting the greens and stopping left me with more lag putts (however was able to consistently be within 2ft or so of hole with 1st putt). So maybe just a minor adjustment shooting for back of green distance instead of distance to flag should help bring that in line. I'll continue to alternate rounds at my home track between the Titleist Left Dot and the CSX LS to get a better feel with misses. High hopes to continue mid 80s play and after my Nov lessons (Going to see Kirk Junge), that drops to low 80s! Popular Post Golfspy_CG2
Continued a stretch of pretty good play over the past two weeks. League round today was 86, and the missed opportunities came with the putter. That is the one bummer the past 3 rounds, that I have had disappointment putting rounds. I even spent time on the putting green a couple days this week. I feel good with it and the stroke feels solid. I do think a lot of it is our green inconsistency. Due to all the heat and stress the have had in August and early September, they are not cutting them as short as they normally do, and today I just could not get the ball to the hole. Probably lost 3 strokes due to that. The highlight continues to me my iron play (T300 for those not keeping track of the T Series thread) these irons are just flat out performing for me. The interaction through the turf is the best I've experienced with any iron, and that includes the Srixon with the V Sole. Distances are great, my first iron shot of the day was 131 yards which is a pretty decent 7 iron for me of late. I hit the 7 and looked like it was all over the flag, only to have it land about 5 paces behind and stop within 2 feet of the pitch mark. I had a couple more that I flew beyond the flag. I just really continue to be pleased and impressed with these irons. One of the guys I was playing with just ordered a set of them this week and said, "I sure hope I hit mine like those" LOL The good play of late has my handicap down to 16.6, my high this year after starting back to play from my illness was 21.1 back in June. So I'm pretty happy with the strides since then. Our playoffs start in two weeks, at this point I'm in them, but hope for another good week next week to boost my seeding a bit Of all the stats below, I'm most pleased with the GIR that is an improvement from about 3 per round earlier in the year. Popular Post JerryB
Son and I played the nine at Buena Vista this morning. I started with my best drive I've ever had on that hole and parred the par four first hole. That was the high point of the day. Couldn't hit my hybrid to save my life but otherwise I wasn't terrible. Most of my shots were decent but off-line. I chunked a couple on the par five third hole for an eight. My son, on the other hand, had tee box yips. He was spraying tee shots everywhere but the fairway. The rest of his game was decent but putting himself in a hole for his second shot too a toll. We actually wound up tied with a +14 46 for the day. Popular Post fixyurdivot
Today we had our first late season frost delay . The irrigation wheelines's all had heavy frost and ice in their spray areas and hanging from the wheels as I drove the 50 miles into Dillon to play Beaverhead GC. I had a 1/4 zip long sleeve and one of my pullover wind jackets on 51F by the time I teed off at 1030. Nice, clear blue sky and the forecasted wind seemed to be holding off. I still wore shorts but brought along my FJ rain/wind pants in case... didn't use them. I played a 2 ball again. This time a yellow AVX against a white Bridgestone E7. These two traded blows back n' forth until I attempted to hit the AVX with my 8i over the tree line and too the green. It didn't clear and caught something solid sending it only God knows where . So I replaced it with a yellow CS and finished the last 5 holes. AVX/CS 40/43 and E7 42/44. This is the second round testing the AVX and I think I like it as well or better than the V1. It seems a bit longer off the tee and with irons, and has a little more stopping power on approaches. Any other AVX aficionados out there? Only one double on the #5 par 3 (water) and had 4 great looks at birdie but never got one to go. On #17, 206 yard, par 3, I pulled my 3w as it was into the wind and has a usually wet false front that rarely lets balls advance forward. I hit both balls as good as I can strike a 3w and both came up about 10 yards short. I started muttering to myself and that I really need to consider a new 3w... couldn't believe they did not cover the front. At home cleaning my clubs I pulled my "3w", removed the head cover, and found it odd that it said 5w on the sole... whadda dipshit . Gorgeous morning and the crisp early fall weather felt great. Driving home I saw them putting together the "Hay Bale and Corn Maze" track (amusement park) just outside of Dillon... always the indicator that summer here in Montana is soon to be over. The irrigation wheelines's all had heavy frost and ice in their spray areas and hanging from the wheels as I drove the 50 miles into Dillon to play Beaverhead GC. Popular Post chisag
... Ka-Razee day on the golf course. My back was stiff and the front 9 was a real struggle. I hit an "accidental" iron shot on the par 3 second hole to a few inches for a birdie. Missed all 8 of the other greens but had 8 one putts, the 2 putt my only bogie. I hit it so poorly that on one hole I almost missed my 2 iron hitting a squirting worm burner off the toe all of 90 yds. Even par on the absolute worst ball striking day I can remember in the last 10 years. But my putter was on auto pilot with several breaking putts in the 10-15 feet all going in. Golf, sigh. ... As if this was not Ka-razee enough, on the 10th tee Chad in the two some I was paired with told me his pard Joey played on the Hooters Tour for 10 years after he went back to the clubhouse for some water. And I am thinking really? The guy that just shot 1 over on the front? But who was I to question him after hitting the ball like an 18 index and like all of us on a bad day I wanted to say "I am also really better than the way I am playing" but of course nobody wants or needs to hear that. Then Joey proceeded to birdie 7 of the 9 holes on the back and he was like a completely different player. He was hitting his 3 wood a good 50 yds past my driver and too many iron shots inside 6 feet to remember. We both birdied #12 and #13 and I said "Did you do some drugs at the turn?" He laughed and said he got routed around an accident on the way to the course and ended up going straight from his car to the first tee and he always warms up before playing ... but he didn't want to make any excuses for his bad play on the front because who wants to hear that? ... I said my back was really stiff on the front but loosened up by the turn and he said "I know, you were even on the front and I was one over but I could tell by your short game, putting and the way you bent to get the ball out of the hole you were hurting" Wow, I didn't think he even noticed my game because it was so bad from tee to green. I added a bogie to the 2 birdies to shoot 1 under on the back while Joey was 6 under, and probably would have been 7 under had it not been so dark he couldn't see the break on the last green. Hitting every fairway and every green it was probably the best ball striking 9 holes I have ever seen in person and it was a real treat to watch him play coming on the heels of the worst ball striking front 9 of mine I can remember. I did something similar the last round I played. Played a couple of holes hitting my "5w" and didn't hit it well. Looked at the sole, it was my 3, I had reversed the slots in the bag where I normally keep them and didn't check the head cover or the bottom of the club. That's a beautiful course you played and it's good you were able to compare different balls during the round. The AVX intrigues me, but I've never played it. Sluggo42
Shot a nice round yesterday with 3 birds and bogies, and 30 putts. Yes, Adele is still very good… zoom in and follow the little ball trail…. Kerplunk! Ive been working on my “new” shot, which is really just the little “punch” shot where you kind of pre-set your wrists forward at address, then keep them ahead of the ball thru impact. I’m using this wedge shot, now down all the way to my 7 iron. Its producing a consistent tight little draw, a lower trajectory as expected, and a good amount of spin. Its kind of my go-to for most of my little chips when I miss the green, but I’ve stretched it out now to around 150 yards. It has now become a shot I use a lot, unless I need more trajectory for shots over a bunker or a real front pin. they produce a lot of birdie opportunities and help keep your scoring down here’s an 84 yd sand wedge and here’s a 147 td 7 iron Vegan_Golfer_PNW, HeathS16, MattF and 5 others 8 Quote TSr2 on tensi blue stiff Speedzone 3-wood on Tensi blue S Epic Max 5 and 7 woods on HZRDUS Reg flex Paradym 9 wood on HZRDUS reg flex P770 / P790 combo set on Ventus R-6 shafts 6-AW T22 Denim Copper 54°, 58° on Kinetic X Trajectory ER3 or, E.A.S. #4 (“Fang” or “Adele”) ProV1x, or, Maxfli Tour X .Org 14 cart bag Adidas Tour 360 , or Sketcher shoes

It's actually a pretty fun track that is kept in great condition and has several challenging holes. Just a 9 hole but with separated tees that give it just enough different look/angle/yardage to keep things interesting. It's also fairly spread out with no adjoining fairways. Both par 3's have a 195 - 205 position and one has a pond and creek guarding the left front portion... perfect for my fade when I pull it off. Both play into the wind, so it can be tough to reach (for me) w/o a flushed hit. Both par 5's play 520+ yards and one is into the prevailing wind. When we first moved here I drove past thinking it was a chump farm field venue but was pleasantly surprised the first time I played it. It gets quite a bit of play but rarely such that I can't jump on with a group or go solo. 18 walking was $25 for years and they just raised it to $30 this season. Fantastic restaurant, nice range, and putting green... considering we're talking Dillon, MT, pinch me . Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
My club is having an outing tomorrow and I wouldn't be able to get out and play my normal 8:00 am time. So I figured I would break tradition and play on Saturday. I was dreading a slower pace of play. I was completely wrong! I get to the course at 8:10, and look at the parking lot. My car is closest. One other person at the course and on the driving range. I had the course to myself on a Saturday prime time. The only groups I came across was when I was teeing off on 17 and they were coming up 11 and they started on 10. Played ok today another round of 70. One bogey and two birdies. Greens were a little slower today, they aerated last week (small hole type not needing a ton of sand) but our roller broke down so the greens were not rolled since early this week. They roll them three times a week. So when I finished my round I looked over at the driving range thinking that would be packed and there were two Pro's giving lessons to two people and one person hitting balls. Nobody waiting to tee off. Couldn't have asked for a better day. Weather was perfect and no one was on the course.
