One other person at the course and on the driving range. I had the course to myself on a Saturday prime time. The only groups I came across was when I was teeing off on 17 and they were coming up 11 and they started on 10. Played ok today another round of 70. One bogey and two birdies. Greens were a little slower today, they aerated last week (small hole type not needing a ton of sand) but our roller broke down so the greens were not rolled since early this week. They roll them three times a week. So when I finished my round I looked over at the driving range thinking that would be packed and there were two Pro's giving lessons to two people and one person hitting balls. Nobody waiting to tee off. Couldn't have asked for a better day. Weather was perfect and no one was on the course. Tennessee hosting an early home game? These are prime for playing two ball. Popular Post Kenny B
Well, we got some rain today. Started right at our 7:35am tee time. Just a drizzle all morning with wind about 15 mph. I played with my wife and 2 other ladies from the Red, or as my wife says, the "Chick tees". Several reasons: the weather, so we could all play together, and I wanted to work on short and mid-irons into the greens. I've been working on Monte videos on ball striking in my hitting bay at home, and I wanted to see if I could bring it to the course. Usually when I play the Blue or White tees, I'm hitting long clubs into the greens. I typically have about 6 GIR, even on a good scoring day. Today I shot Even par on the front nine (one birdie/one bogey), and shot +1 on the back nine (one birdie/two bogeys) for a round of 73; one shot under my age! It could have been much better; 3-putted twice, which I almost never do. The greens were punched on Tuesday and being wet, they were quite slow. Didn't compensate. I also had 14 GIR compared to my usual 6 GIR, so I had plenty of birdie chances. I was really happy with approach shots 8i through wedges; yes, could have been closer to the pin, but had no bad mis-hits. Driver was so-so; started driving it better on the back nine. On #13 one of the ladies who is 20 years younger than I am and a former hockey player, hit a great drive. She always outdrives me. The other lady asked if I was going to beat that, and I said "Probably not." I put a good swing on the ball and got it higher in the air than I have all day... and it was into the wind!! When we got to our balls, she said "Oh no!!" I had her by 2 feet; at which time I used my favorite quote from this scene in the movie "RED"....... Popular Post JerryB
Son and I went to Hughes Creek in Elburn. First place we've played that had a starter. Kinda neat; he told us what to expect on the first tee and a couple pointers for the rest of the course, which was beautiful. We were paired with an older couple, Bob and Kathy. They were a delight. Super nice and friendly. We had a great time. They gave us a couple recommendations for other good courses in the area. I shot a 94 (52/42), a stroke better than my last round and another new personal best. No range at the course so the first few holes were a little rough but I got into a groove and was hitting everything well. I even got back to back birdies on 16 and 17, another first for me. 16 was my first holed chip. Not too far off the green, but still a good little shot. 17 was the longest putt I've ever had. I was just trying to get it close and it dropped. I hit 12/14 fairways, 6 GIR, and had 41 putts. First time keeping track of most of these numbers. Best of all, I beat my son by two strokes! Popular Post Grand Stranded
My club kicked off our annual Match Play tournament this morning, 64 players in 4 flights. Winner of the A plays the C, B plays the D then the two winners play for the title. I was in the B flight which consisted of players within the 11.5 -16 range. I drew a player I know very well and since he’s a 12 he gave me 2 strokes. I fell behind by 2 after four holes, but finished the front with 3 pars( one on a stroke hole) and a birdie and I was up 2 at the turn. I kind of got boat raced on the back 9, even though I played pretty well. My opponent had a birdie, 6 pars and 2 bogeys on the back. As well as he played I still had my chances. My putter was a fraction off though. On 15 & 16 I had par putts of 4-5 feet and I thought I made both, but they went over the edge of the cup. That gave him a 1 up lead, and on 17 I made a 20 foot par putt to halve and send the match to the par 5 18th. We both hit very good drives, but he laid up perfectly in front of the waste area 100 yards from the pin. I felt a par wasn’t going to catch him, so I decided to go for it from 220 out with my 3 wood, which is something I might pull off 1 out of 10 times. I hit it as good as I can, and had it been 5 yards to the left, it would’ve got the front of the green. Instead I went into a deep green side bunker. My opponent put his wedge to about 20 feet, and I did the same with my bunker shot. My birdie putt broke my heart. It looked perfect, caught the left edge at a speed I thought for sure was perfect, but the ball did a horseshoe around the cup and ended up on the front lip. (Ugh.) My opponent lagged to 3 feet, and to his credit made the putt to end the match 1 up. We both played really well, but somebody had to lose, and today it was me. The two other players in our 4 some are both excellent players. When we finished they told me and my opponent how impressed they were watching us play today, and it was a shame either of us had to lose. So, in the end, a loss, but a good day to build on going forward. On the par 5 #18 hole the lady that hits longer than me said she uses her 3W because her driver can reach the water at the dogleg. I said, "Well then I can't reach it!" Popular Post Syks7
Played an impromptu 18 with a buddy just getting into the game (our wives decided to hang out today) and shot a personal best. 66!!!! (on a par 59) We played this little 3100 yard 18 hole course near their house that I thought was going to just be a rando little pitch and put that turned out to be a pretty reasonably manicured SCGA rated 18 hole course with great green complexes (small greens with good bunkering) several short par 4s, a lot of fun bunker protected short par 3s, and some relatively challenging mid to long iron par 3s. After playing it I've decided (not because of my score) that there should be a lot more courses like it in the world. My beginner buddy had a fun time without being asked to perform shots that a beginner wouldn't have in their repertoire, he got to have a couple real birdie looks, make a par, and make a lot of short irons swings. For me it was basically a short game practice all day. I didn't have to pull a club north of the 4 iron all day and I only hit that once -- off the tee on the longest, 379 yard, par 4. Game wise I was pretty lights out on the front 9, less so on the back 9 which was more me being sloppy than anything. I wasn't as dialed as I was on the front. That basically started on 9 when I only had to two put to turn in my first even par 9 hole score and I left the uphill 4 footer an inch sort. SMH. I had two more three puts on the back 9 and neither one of them was really a putting miscue. It was this doofus not focusing on the shot and leaving two lags well short because I didn't study them properly. Other than that my putter was pretty lights out. I lipped out 3 birdie tries from the 6-8 ft. range and slid a couple of scramble par opportunities over the top edge. 35 putts just doesn't do justice to how well I putted today, but oh well. Irons: I've never had a day that I felt more comfortable. That 95% yardage book I put together is absolutely gold for me. Just aiming for that power level, even after only two rounds, has pushed my iron play and full wedge shots into a new level of consistency. I just feel fully comfortable hitting those numbers and as a result I'm not mishitting it as much or as badly when I do. Its a subtle little change that I wouldn't have thought about until I read it somewhere on this board. Wedges: It was my most consistent day with my wedges ever. Full swing, partial, sand. It all felt comfortable and I felt good attacking the pin. I downloaded a book after Wednesday's round (Art of the short game by Stan Utley) and have been reading it and watching some of his youtube videos. I was doing some of what he was teaching already but missing other key components. I tried some of it warming up and figured I'd give it a go for the day. It worked shockingly well for me never having chipped that way before. Putter: As mentioned above the 35 putts doesn't do justice to how I actually putted, especially when 3 of them were literally just because of lazy brain farts on lags. It's kind of fun to say I shot a 66 over 18 and actually have it be true. Even if it is on a par 59. 7 over is still my best round by two strokes so I'm pretty happy. Often referred to as "executive course" layouts, and typically 9 holes, I've played a few over the years that are lots of fun. Most of the popular retirement and snowbird locations have these tracks. Las Barrancas in Yuma has one they call an executive but it has tee positions that offer close to standard length too. sirchunksalot, bens197, MattF and 3 others 6 Quote G410 Plus, 9 Degree Driver G400 SFT, 16 Degree 3w G400 SFT, 19 Degree 5w ZX5 Irons 4-AW Glide 2.0 56 Degree SW (removed from double secret probation ) ER5v Putter (Evnroll ER5v Official Review) AI-One Milled Seven T CH (Currently Under Product Test)
Popular Post RollingGreens
I got out for a quick 9 last night shot 39 on the front, 1st time playing in about a week and a half since my son was born, hit the range for about 10 minutes prior to teeing off. Really hit my driver well except for the second hole where I caught it a bit high and outside the sweet spot, but saved the hole with a laser 4 iron into the green from 215 for a 15 foot putt. Didn't play the par 3s too great, but I was able to get up and down when needed. My iron swing felt great, I was able to hit both long and short irons without much of an issue. Hitting GIR 7/9. Greens were a bit slow so compared to what I was used to so I left a few putts short about a foot. Driver was on point though, putting a couple balls out there 250+, which for me is right where I need to be especially with the windy weather. All in all I was happy with the round and the score. A gorgeous Geoffrey Cornish executive course layout in Middleton, Massachusetts folded a couple of years ago, and that really disappointed me a lot. It was maintained beautifully, it was easy to walk, and it was so much fun to play. They used to have a really good pro shop, too. I never bought a set there, but I bought several single clubs and other gear. The pro shop diminished in recent years as green grass pro shops have everywhere. At one time they had a lady teaching pro there who was almost able to teach me how to chip instead of lobbing the ball everywhere. Anyway, nothing lasts forever, but we had some fun shootouts there and i miss it. I had a par three course near me when I lived in CT. A real par three. No mats, and the lengths ranged from 100 yards to 250 yards. There were even a few water holes and elevation changes. To me that is the best way to work on your short game. It was so much fun to play. We even had our work league there. cksurfdude, BostonSal, sirchunksalot and 6 others 9 Quote Driver, TSi 1 S Flex 3 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 7 Wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 Hybrid King Tec MMT R Flex Irons, Tour UST Recoil 95 R Flex (6 - Gap) Wedges, Snakebite KBS Hi- Rev2.0 54* & 60* Agera 35" Ultralight 14-way Cart Bag

I learned on a little par 33 here in LA, but while that little course has a place in y heart it's so heavily traveled that it's pretty beat up. This is the first time I've run across a full 18 executive, which, despite the clear heavy traffic was in pretty good shape. I did fix a half dozen pitch marks on every green, but thats kind of normal for LA unless you get onto a private track. It was such an enjoyable experience that I told my buddy that I'd play there with him any time he wants, and that if he wanted and that it was an excellent place to learn/practice. I'm also going to bring my daughter out there when she gets big enough to actually play. It's a great learner course for kids because of the yardages. sirchunksalot, Tom the Golf Nut, GolfSpy_SHARK and 3 others 6 Quote Driver 0311 Gen 5 -- Tensei CK Orange 60 Woods 0341 3W -- Tensei AV Raw Blue Hybrids 0317X 2&4 -- Tensei AV Raw Blue Irons ZX7 4/AW -- C-Taper Lite 110 Wedges T7 55º @55/7 -- TT DG Spinner Putter DF2.1 or Link.1 -- Accra Ball Zstar Diamond

I used to play that quite often just as a way to work on approach shots and short game. Popular Post edingc
Two nines this weekend. 39 on the back yesterday and 40 on the front this morning. Three birdies, 10 bogies, five pars. Started great both days and tapered off toward the end of both rounds. Happy with how I played, but just wish I could hold it together for a whole round. Still can't complain! dlow206
Was striking the ball pretty well on the front 9 but then fell apart pretty early on, on the back 9. Don't know what happened really, my head just wasn't it or something. It wasn't just my golf game. I flipped my electric cart over twice on the back 9, had never done that before. Maybe because I didn't have any snacks today during my round or something.
